Title: Russian/Ukraine/German Spammers
Post by: Centreflunk on January 05, 2009, 12:24:28 AM
Hi to all @ SMF
& Happy New Year To All -

SMF 1.1.7

My SMF site (http://www.centreflunk.com/forum) is being hit with Russian/Ukraine/German -
at least 5 a day - spammers - some post porn links, some post Viagra links, while others just join, then they'll come back in a week or so & post their spam.
Is anyone else being flooded? or is it just me?
Yes my site runs a "Nazi Theme" - however, another friends SMF site is getting the same postings & problems.

Is there anyway to stop this, can I ban people from certain countries thru SMF or is it a "Hosting" problem to fix?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanx in Advance
Centreflunk

hahaa nice site.

Yeah mate, there are various ways of stopping/preventing this from happening.

If you have a section where guests can post, you can use [THIS] (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=369) mod to disable them from posting links.

You can use [THIS] (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1095) mod to stop a certain user group from posting links.

You could also puzzle and maybe stop bots from registering by using [THIS] (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516) mod.
So far, I have not heard of a bot getting through this.

These are only a few ideas, and there are others, but these will help :)
If a mod needs an update, just post in its thread, and someone will assist you.

Good Luck :)

It is an attack on an Australian welfare system, using "shock treatment" ie. the obvious.

I see the humour in it, but I understand how some will not agree with it.
You have made your point clear, but please refrain from threats on this board.
Either pm the person, or report the thread/post etc...

Our site located in Finland has also been hit by spammers in the past 4-5 months, just like Centreflunk described, but not so often.
Most of the spam coming from Russia.
Our site is only focused in motorcycles. Nothing more.

I just integrated reCaptcha (http://recaptcha.net/) into my post forms (for guests) and I haven't had any spammers get through... Other than the human ones who were able to register and then posted one spam message.  But that's rare.

Sabre,

Thanx Mate,
I've installed the anti-spam verification questions (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516) mod -
that should keep a few of the bots out -
as for the others, I guess they'll have to do their research on the Australian way of life!!!

I'll post back in a weeks time & let you know how things are going!

Cheers

Sabre,
Thanx for that mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516).
I haven't had one come thru, after checking the error log, I can see they keep trying,
but to no avail, again, thank you!
