Title: Split mods and mods requests into 1.x and 2.x
Post by: IngeJones on January 05, 2009, 12:30:08 PM
It's quite confusing having mod requests for each in the same board.  Loads of people forget to say which version they are asking about (I know I do!) and sometimes even when it has been stated, respondents start pointing them to one which is for the wrong SMF version.

I see both sides of this issue... as an end-user, it would be nice to have a quick view of what mods are for my branch of SMF, but as a mod developer, it's a lot easier to keep track of one topic per mod.

I'm actually leaning towards having two seperate subforums, though. In addition to stopping the "what version of SMF are you using?" posts, it would also reduce the "You told Jimmy to put that code in Display.php, but when I did it to mine, it broke my forum. What am I doing wrong?" posts. Trust me, I've gotten quite a few of those in the past and it really bugs me when it takes 5 posts to figure out that they're just using the wrong version...

/me votes "aye"

Won't matter in too distant future when most people will be using 2.x

Besides, its not too difficult for mod writers to make mods work for both versions at the same time.

Yeah If it is a good idea mod developers will normally make it for both versions. I usually start with 1.1.x version of the mod that move it to 2.0

It's not that the mods are for both versions... it's that the support thread for each dual-mode mod is full of ambiguous posts and whatnot.

Yeah i think it is fine as it is. Mod developers make mods not caring what version it is for most of the time. But mod developers tend to develop only for the most current release since that is most widely used normally.

I think with the way things are set up that it would just obfuscate the mod support process more than help it.   However, I am not a mod author and have no published mods so feel free to take or ignore my opinion as you see fit.

As an ex-mod author it would be a pain in the ass.
Instead of a single support topic, there would be multiple to monitor/check reply to.
Which becomes even more of a pain when (as is common) issues affecting one affect the other.

Would a compromise be to split the mod requests into two boards, while leaving the mod threads themselves in just the one?

It would be a pain, if the mod is supported by both versions, but it's for the greater good, you have my vote.
