Title: Help! Unable to change File Permissions! All files are non-writable!
Post by: evdc1 on February 03, 2009, 01:26:32 PM
My forum (SMF2.0b4) was automatically installed by my host. I was able to set up the boards, etc. But, several options require permission to write files. So I went to Admin->Main->Packages->File Permissions and found all files are set to "not writable". I tried to change it to Standard settings (at this point, I don't know what all these things mean) but it wouldn't change anything. I did provide the ftp password in box at the bottom of the page. It was accepted and the box has vanished, but it is refusing to change the permission.

I couldn't find any help in the manual; nowhere does it explain what "read, write, execute, custom" mean (these are the options given for each set of files).

Please help.
Sri.

You can try changing the permissions manually with an FTP client. These docs should explain FTP, and read, write etc
How do I use FTP? / What is FTP? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=480)
How do I chmod? / what is chmod? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=477)

If that doesn't work, you can ask your host to make the files writeable for you :)

That's what I finally did! They were able to reset it the same day.
Thanks,

Sri.
