Well on my forum we have posts with Rapidshare and Megaupload Links, sometimes the links go dead and we have no way of knowing directly.
I have a firefox addon which can check links and see if there valid, and was thinking maybe someone could apply the way this addon checks links to a smf mod and then have the mod PM the thread starter or poster of links that are dead and possibly replace the links that are dead with an alternative text.
also, links are inside HIDE tag (hidden content)
My forum software is SMF 2 BETA 4 and I will be upgrading to SMF 2 RC1 soon
if you need more info, please dont hesistate to ask.
Well Thanks in advanced hope it aint too much trouble :)
this would be great man.... i have the same idea... this can be revolutionary :D
What firefox addon? ::)

What firefox addon? ::)
I knew it would probably be you creating this mod, you have such great mods :D
ok well the addon is a greasemonkey script, so get greasemonkey addon for firefox if you dont already.
GreaseMonkey Addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
I have uploaded the Javascript to my own hosting
http://www.requestiso.com/misc/link_checker/LC_script.js
simply install the greasemonkey addon then once done, drag the javascript file on to a firefox browser window to install.
Good Luck with the mod, anymore questions, please, dont hesistate to ask :)
Ive been looking on google and here and discovered many ppl here and everywhere want this mod or something very similar,
whoever makes it will surly be a mod hero :)
Possibly in the next (or the other) week, I try begin do it.
Id also be extremely interested in a modification of this kind. I think it would need to have the following functionally (if possible)
1. Basic link checker for rapidshare links in user selected boxes (mine are in [code ]. (Perhaps with some AJAX functionality while it checks each individual link.
2. Automatic detection of "dead" links, and an option (set by the administrator) to either delete the post, or move it upon detection (to a Graveyard thread). If that's not possible perhaps an email or PM could be sent to the admin // moderation team.
Thanks :)

yea moving links to a dead link board (chosen by admin) would be a great addition to the mod, PM a Staff in charge (chosen by admin) and the topic starter, ive been waiting ofr someone to work on this for a long time, and there is much interest in it.
I urge you to post here if your interested in the mod, it will encourage mod creators that its actually worth making :)

well
I would imagine that simply copying what the grease monkey script does to the page and making that permanently integrated will do the trick for detection of the links, then add the other features like moving to a dead link board and notifying the admin and/or other staff and topic starter or post with dead links, but its easier said than done lol..
Thanks M-DVD, well appreciated from me, and others too!!

I have a small request of mine. Could you release an "outside smf forum" version of the script? So i can use the script anywhere on my site that is.
Though if you dont want to its fine . :-X
Wow 40% done, sweet!
M-DVD thats great progress can't wait to see it in action! :D
Thanks for the great effort
Hey M-DVD I know it hasn't been long since you last posted but how is this going?
If you need a BETA tester id be happy to help, my site only has 48 members and 716 topics (all Rapidshare links) in [ code ] tags but I wanted to offer some support :)
This mod will be fantastic and actually complete my forum :D
I cant wait :P
And as everyone else says, i wouldnt mind beta testing your script.
lol... looks like everybody wants this mod.
Oh by the way M-DVD, can u somehow make this compatible with the hide tag special mod, so somehow the links will be able to be read by the link checker inside hidden content, im sure I added that info earlier but just a quick reminder here too
Thanks JohnCcCcCc
The MOD is already finished a few days ago. But I have a few days away from SMF and I haven't uploaded. Now, i will make the images later.
The MOD takes into account many things, shouldn't have problems with everything you have mentioned here, and even more things :P
:o that's amazing news M-DVD
Cant wait to install it/see it, thanks very much for taking the time to make this, its awesome! :D
Have you submited it to mod site?
Pls let us know if you need mod testers...

Too bad you will link to their site :P
I will be waiting for m-dvd's script!
I use that script on my website already mraza, its functionality is good, however the link to an external website and the fact it cant delete/move/notify threads that have dead links is its downfall.
I plan on using M-DVD's script and yours together.
Mod 1905 was just accepted, 6 more to go :P
Oh, 6 more... :p
This could last forewer.. :D
M-DVD, would you mind uploading it somewhere else meanwhile? ;D

Id also appreciate this if its not too much trouble. :)
Although the advantage of "open source" is that, anyone can know the code and know What make the MOD, and nothing is hidden; In SMF I like that there is a team that reviews and approves the benevolence and security of the codes.
Ie, I prefer it to be formally approved by the Team Customizer, before distribute it.
:)
of course, do it by the book lol..
thanks again for the great mod :)
Just noticed that http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1916 has been approved, I made the assumption that modifications are denied or accepted in order, or perhaps I'm just mistaken but;
Does this mean that the Link Checker mod wasn't accepted? :o
:D maybe not numerical order :)
hope to see it soon.
I need it... badly ;D

I feel your needs, dont worry about it though, many IDs below 1916 have also not been assigned yet, maybe its just taking more time than expected.
Argh!... ;p
Still nothing... :/
This does seem to be taking an awfully long time, but patience is a virtue so we have to sit tight. :)
The waiting :(
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1911
Is finally approved :D
Yeah :)
There's a bug... the link checker is not checking megaupload links when the link have /es/ or /it/ or whatever in the middle of the url.
so, here's how to fix it:
open AutoLinkChecker-Subs.php
find:
'mega' => '(?<mega>megaupload|megarotic|megaporn|sexuploader)\.com/\?d=\w{8}',
replace with:
'mega' => '(?<mega>megaupload|megarotic|megaporn|sexuploader)\.com/([a-z]{2}\/)?\?d=\w{8}',
find:
'mega' => '(?:megaupload|megarotic|megaporn|sexuploader)\.com/\?d=\w{8}',
replace with:
'mega' => '(?:megaupload|megarotic|megaporn|sexuploader)\.com/([a-z]{2}\/)?\?d=\w{8}',
it should work.
and i don't know if it's a bug (or it's just me) but the first rapidshare link inside a code tag is not being checked (using Opera or IE).
btw, M-DVD thanks, ur mod is working like a charm!
i have Database error (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=321151.msg2136213#msg2136213) on my test forum. (version 1.1.9), anybody can help with that? :/
