I'm getting a "The message body was left empty." error when trying to edit a large post. It's ok as long as I don't go over 5130 characters at which point the error appears.

The forum setting for character limit is set to 20,000 - increasing the value makes no difference.

Has anyone ever come across this before? How can I solve it?

It might be a php limit (rougly limiting you to 5kb $_POST)

Please can link to a phpinfo() file.

So quite a lot really ;) - I've already disabled Aeva as I saw some mention of a video mod bug causing a similar problem - that was before I discovered the character limit though.

EDIT: Just to add I haven't installed any new ones very recently so I'm not sure it's a mod causing a problem.

I've installed a fresh version of SMF on the same database and the problem is replicated on the second install. Would any of the devs know of any phpMyAdmin commands which might fix the issue?

I eventually threw in the towel on my old host which was being decidedly unhelpful and have changed hosting.

I managed to import the database and get all the catagories, boards, posts, members & membergroups.

I'm still getting this problem though.

I'm also getting a strange issue where as soon as I read an old thread it gets marked as "new" and therefore highlights the board. If I try marking all threads as "read" it highlights everything as being "new".

Can anyone help me with either issue?

After further investigation it would appear the problem is caused by having too many BBcode entries in a single message. By removing some of them I was able to increase the message size enough.

How can I increase this limit?

Is the character limit calculated in BBcode or the parsed output?

By default the only character limit should be that set by the database, which I believe is currently 65535 characters per post and ofcourse the setting in the admin area, that you've already checked.

Any other limitations must be caused by a server configuration issue of some sort. If you try posting a long post here, or on any other SMF board I doubt you will be able to replicate the problem.

Who is your host?
Generally there should be no major security issues caused by phpinfo, so it would probably make the most sense to leave the link in this topic until the link is resolved :). There are many people who may be able to suggest additional fixes if they can view it

I've actually switched host since this problem first arose. The problem persisted though when I tried posting exactly the same message as before that was before I restored my database or installed any mods.

Nope hasn't been solved yet but can be worked around. Basically the problem is that by adding a lot of BBcode to a topic the character limit appears to drop so it prevents you posting unless you delete some of the BBcode or text.

What's more strange is the error you get is "The message body was left empty" and not a too many characters error. The problem was persistent on both my old and new hosts with clean and restored databases.

When you say 5130 characters long, is that plain text 5130 characters? Can you link to the applicable post?

When you say those that include a lot of BBCode, what do you call a lot? Some BBCode turns into a lot more characters stored in the message field of the database than what is displayed/used to create the displayed outcome.

For example:
[u]underline[/u] = underline

So 16 characters turns into 36. So for that ~5130 post you are trying to edit, what is it's character count via the actual field contents in your phpMyAdmin messages table?

Nothing appears in the cpanel error log which can have any relevance (as I know and understand the cause of what's there)

I did consider that as the problem Rumbaar however I increased the size of the character limit to 20000 with no effect - which made me think there must be a limit on the amount of BBcode. I also tried manually increasing the limit even higher in phpmyadmin - with no effect either.

Are you able to post the same post in another SMF forum? Increasing the character limit will have no affect on the fields db space limit. But you've said you've increased that, how did you do so?

I honestly can't remember as it was some time ago and I followed instructions on a forum which seems to have gone offline now. I think I just changed the type of field.

We recently migrated server so I had a chance to try it out on a completely clean install on a different host - same thing happened.

I'm sure the same would happen if it was hitting the field type 'text' limit of 65,535 bytes. Now if you are using utf8 that can further reduce the number of actual characters the field can hold.

That's ~5130 characters including BBCode tags.

Unfortunately I can't link to the post as its been a while and I reduced the amount of BBcode to make it fit - the reduced version of the post is here (http://www.twmod.org/Forums/index.php?topic=856.0). I can post 10000+ characters quite happily if theres no BBcode on my forums though.

The linked post would give some idea but with more bold tags.

So it is/was mediumtext and still wouldn't post correctly?

Do you have a copy of the actual contents of the post in question? I'd like to test it on other 'fresh' installs of SMF 2.x

That linked thread, I assume the first post, doesn't contain much bbcode at all. So can't think of why it would be stopped. I notice there are images in that post, that are being reduced from their original size. Not sure if that could be a factor as well.

That is correct - the field is set to mediumtext but still won't post correctly. I can post smaller posts but not over that limit

I don't have the original but the code below is a mock up with the same effect. If I remove one character from the end it will post correctly, as it is it generates a "The message body was left empty." message when you try and post and on preview produces nothing (just like when preview an empty message)

Now that is strange and I'm starting to think it might be a bug.

As I tried on a fresh install got the same issue, tried it here and got the same result.

Also if you take the last two characters it posts, but if you take them from say the start of the document it doesn't post still.

Seems like another limit in the parsing process is resulting in the whole message body being dumped.

I'm not sure how to get the attention of the DEV's in this regards anymore.

Reproduced on a fresh install of 1.1.10 as well. (PHP 5.2.6, MySQL 5.0.75, linux)
(same error, "the message body was left empty")
Taking out a few more than two characters from the end (only two didn't seem to work) allowed the message to be posted. Taking out from the start doesn't work also.

We should be posting it in Bug Reports (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=137.0) I think.

Actually on further testing I'm sure it has to do with your custom IMGT bbcode you are using. As I was able to post successfully when using the normal IMG bbcode. I even made sure it was 5106 characters as the original.

Well I'm not sure if it's the actual code, as when I tested I didn't have the custom BBCode installed in my forum. So it wasn't parsing that new code correctly anyways. Which might indicate to me that the actual bbcode parser part of the forum might have issues with it elsewhere. Now exactly where and what, I'm not sure.

I'm not sure, someone with more behind the scene knowledge. Not sure how to get to a higher level of debugging mode to possibly see where the process is failing.

In the past when you got the same error, were you just using the standard IMG tags and got the same result?

It just didn't parse as I used the exact same code. Which makes no sense as the most obvious bug is a limit on BBcode somewhere.

I know this is an older post, but I wanted to know if this issue been resolved. I couldn't find any other info on this matter, so I apologize in advance if I've posted this question in the wrong place.

I'm having this problem on long html posts I make.

The example below is fine but when I add more info i.e. games and scores I have the problem of "The message bodywas left empty" in my test board.

Are you sure copy-pasting went fine, I mean, ALL characters were actually pasted in the textarea before posting?

Did posting here result in any error/warning/anything?

I'm afraid the issue (since it seems to be indeed a bug) will not be solved for 1.1.x line, sorry. It's the stable, but no more developed, for years, version...

I will try to replicate the issue on 2.0 though. So, trying to use your reply:

definitely a bug, related to the closing [/ html ] tag.. ~~related function is un_preparsecode in Subs-Post.php.. haven't checked the details but temporary removed this block and the content is no longer cut off..~~

I have the problem on my forum that we also get the error "The message body was left empty"

This is when I do not use the img-tags. When I do decide to use the img-tags, I get the error "The message body was left empty"

Sounds like whatever mod you are using to automatically show those linked images is breaking your forum.
