Title: What it was not pleasant to you in "Curve"?
Post by: zetatalk on October 06, 2009, 08:29:22 PM
Communities, write that was not pleasant to you in new style "Curve" and what you would wish to change in this style?

I wish people would stop complaining about the small little personal preference things.

There is a reason it is an RC and not final.

If, however, you have some positive feedback about something you don't like and can offer a resolution to it, then by all means, go ahead.

The only thing I didn't like was all the complaints about personal preferences being classified as bugs. :P

You are fully entitled to modify it for your own site if you don't like it when you get the public release.

We cannot write something that EVERYONE will like, it just isn't possible. Instead we write something that is pretty good for everyone, and provides a strong base to modify things on. Meaning that if there is something you personally do not like, it can be changed on your site. I personally love the new quoting style.

i dont think curve is amazing, but as default themes go then in the grand scheme of things then its a lot better than Default Core

theres a bunch of stuff i want to change straight out the box like;

board icons - they suck
recent posts - too basic and unpleasing on the eyes ( ive never liked the recent posts layout)
the "corner"  images i think arent the best as i can see where the corners have been coloured in, especially on the catbg

but then curve is just essentially a default theme and most people are going to edit it to there own taste or just install a custom theme and not use the curve theme as it is - so no point moaning about personal preference dislikes - just edit them

1/ We know. We're onto that and will sort them before Final, but coding the thing came first. ;)

2/ I agree. Whether I can get anyone else with commit access to agree is another matter. At the very least the header bars should match the rest of the theme.

3/ Can't see it myself, and I have a top grade monitor and good colour vision.

I noticed it too. the area outside of the curved corners are colored white. Wonder why white instead of transparency? (see attached)

i believe the reason is so smf works in older browsers like IE6 that doesnt support .png transparency so .gifs are used which if you want to create corners you have to "color" them in - when older outdated useless browsers are removed then the world will be a better place

So why not have a clause to serve one image to IE6 users and another for the civilized world?

That image is a png-8. IE6 does handle png-8 transparency and they give a smaller file size than other formats so png-8 was the obvious choice. Unfortunately png8 images with rounded corners need to be matted or they will look jaggy (same as gif).

Now come to think of it we are re-doing the main image for Curve a bit so it may end up using another trick. You can get alpha transparency in png-8 (assuming you use the right apps, and Photoshop wont cut it for this) which means you don't need to matte the image to get curves looking smooth, except in IE6 of course because IE6 doesn't do alpha transparency.

Personally I would be inclined to not worry if it didn't look quite as clean in IE6. There's no point calling extra images for an outdated browser like that, especially in a default theme which is supposed to be kept as simple as possible.

Personally I think the catbg's are fine as they are. However the titlebg's show the white corners in areas like the info centre where the background isn't white. That could be improved for sure.

It works fine for me. My bank still says that it is OK. I have only come across one site that suggest that I upgrade.

I say time to switch banks - in a hurry. I can't think of a single bank in Finland that would officially support IE6 anymore. ( It works on most though, but is not officially supported. )
