This mod embeds a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator into your forum.
Once you have legally obtained your ROM you can upload them anywhere (even outside of your hosts server)
then simply go to the modifications area in admin panel and set the link to the rom right there.
You will also need to enter the size of the rom (bytes). Which can be easily got by checking the properties of the file in your OS.
Refer to Image.
Simply Click the vNES button (after settings applied) and you will be able to play your ROM with your keyboard.
Key legend is on the page under game play area.
Screens:

1.0
1st release.
Pretty awesome mod :), i would love to see support for more then 1 rom though.
You mean more than one ROM at a time, that could be implemented some time :)
Hopefully this doesn't sound like a retarded question... But where do you get "legal" ROMs? I've never heard of such a thing and wouldn't think that NES ROMs would even be for sale... I'd totally be willing to get some mario game and put it on my site...

Its possible to dump the ROMs from the cartridge with some hardware, if you have an original cartridge it would be completely legal to use it.
If you download a ROM, its likely to be illegal to download, I and SMF take no responsibility for your/anybodies actions while using this mod.
There are ROMs which are home-brew, meaning, there is no copyright, I believe "Super Mario Frustration" has no copyright, but is very similar to Super Mario Brothers on the NES console, also its very difficult and frustrating, hence the name lol.
Long story short, Home-brew NES ROMs can be used with the emulation mod and since there is no copyright on those "home-brew" ROMs they would be completely legal and free to use.
Any plans for a 1.1.10 version?
wonderful mod.. :D :D
1.1.10 please :'(
I currently have no plans for 1.1.x port, sorry.
I have been a little busy in the last week and will be busy the next coming weeks, I don't have time to port any mods, although, I will have time to support the current ones.
Maybe i'm a complete retard, but i'm currently using the Extreme6 theme, installed your mod, uploaded the ROM to the root dir, and I can't get the thing to load. I even tried uploading it to a different site and using that URL, but it still wouldn't load. Please tell me it's something simple i'm messing up. I'm half drunk, but it looks like this should be really simple and i'm missing something. The site I want it on is a sub domain of my main site, but every combination of URL I tried, including the external one, didn't seem to load the ROM - it just stuck at 0%.
Also, is it only text you can add as a button? No pics instead? It looks really crappy to have a load of nice pics for links, and then some out of place text in the middle of them.
P.S. I'm really new to SMF. I just found it via Google and learning as I go along. Love it so far. Had to edit the css file of the theme and change some of the border images to fit in the logo I made, but that was easy enough. My last site was done in PHP-Fusion, but SMF is awesome.

Make sure the ROM link is exactly right, also grab the byte size of the ROM.
Note that the link is case sensitive, including the extension.
If that's not the problem send me a link to your forum and I will check it out. :)

Maybe it is the link i'm messing up. I don't think so, but maybe... Trying to get Altered Beast to run, and i've got the ROM size as 262,160 bytes.
Pfft, idk. Lost and confused.
If you send a link (and regular user account info if guests have no access) I can see the Output and see where the problem is.

Holy....
I've finally got it working!
Thanks.
Glad to hear, just for future reference, all links to roms hosted internally or externally will be case sensitive.
If you have trouble setting rom link using standard internal linking ("/roms/rom.nes") or something similar, you can use the whole link "http://yoursite.com/etc/etc/rom.nes".
Cool, thanks again :)
Is there a possibillty to ad GBA emulator? instead of the nes emulator ?

If you can find a web based emulator I can add it, I will take a look around for some more emulators and make integration mods for those too :)
Java based emulators maybe ?
could that work?
That's what vNES is... a Java based NES emulator.
Trouble with more recent platforms is that they need more computing power to emulate, and Java is not exactly a high performance environment.
We could try it ?
for people who have a reseller packeges or dedicated servers it could work?
http://forum.mobiles24.com/showthread.php?t=5215
maybe this one could work?
or there is also a java emulator named MeBoy
Java Emulators are usually the way to go, but its not just as simple as getting a jar file made for phones and embedding them, there are several settings which need to be applied and be customizable by the end user.
Also, we don't see many web-based emulators, so there difficult to come by.
tried myself but I'm getting an error.

I'm try to convert it to GBA emulator.
I think I'm now at the state of let it load the rom, cause, java is now loading but does not go any further.
Made some changes changes. the jar file is now the jar file of the gba, an changed the template a bit.
The part with the class was giving errors.
Did you modify the template to refer to your GBA emulator's files?
Yes...
but I think I found the problem working on it at the moment

You will have to find a emulator that is completely made for GBA, this is for NES, you cannot mix and match files, So far, I have only seen a GameBoy emulator which could be possible to integrate.
I will continue looking, but if/when I find one, it will be a separate mod.
and did you found something?
Well...
Not really, Java is not really powerful enough for many emulators, NES may well be the most Java can support, I may be wrong but I doubt it.
If I find anything, I will notify.
great mod man thanks works on 2.0 RC2
This mod is about to be updated, I will be adding support for several roms at any given time and cleaning it up a little, if anyone wants this they may be better off waiting a few days
Initially there will be support for 5 roms, I will be remaking this from scratch, it should be done in about 1 week.
The update is complete, surprisingly quickly
Fully tested and some minor improvements, customizable tab label, uses a drop down menu to select which rom, you can choose the names in the menu also.
I have coded it so that if you only use 3 roms for instance, the drop down menu will only include those 3 roms.
Make sure to uninstall your older version, this uses some of the same database records as the older one.
/me awaits request for more rom support...
lol
im having a slight prob.. mod works well for admin accounts.. but everyone else just gets "an error has occured"... the membergroup permissions are fine.. i've tripple checked that one.. and it all shows in the menu.. but once clicked it doesnt get any further than that... any ideas?
I will take a look into it tonight and tomorrow, its already really late here, dont worry, if the error is on my part its probably just a typo somewhere and should be an easy fix.
too easy.. no rush..
Version 2.2 uploaded.
Changelog..
Fixed Permissions issue, add ability to add permissions to each rom.
works great... thank you!
can i make a suggestion for something to look at in future updates?.. they way my forum is set the java square the games run in is cutting off the drop down menus.. like they fall down behind it and arent clickable.. its not really an issue cause theres a million ways around it very quickly.. but i guess making the spacing a little more at the top of the game pages to allow a little room for drop down menus would make it look a little cleaner and that little bit easier to navigate..
other than that though this a top mod.. cheers for all your hard work!
My dropdown menu ain't working for other themes..
Suggestions?
The drop down menu is not coded in any theme files, it should not be a problem with any theme.
Well... If there is no dropdown menu then members can't select nes games and that's the main problem :/
Can Admins see it, if so, check the permissions and make sure regular members and any other member groups have access. If that does not help:
PM or post me a link to your forum.
It is the theme which doesn't show a dropdown menu.
The default theme works fine. I am using DS-Natural which doesn't appear to work with it.
Do you still need a link?
Since this theme does not edit any theme files, its very strange that the button does not work for you.
I would have to take a look, so post or PM me a link
Which Theme do you have also?
http://nexuscore.org/ is the link to my website.
Fresh installed SMF so DS-Naturally is the only one amongst core and the default theme.
Just to be sure, you have configured the roms haven't you?
If you don't add the roms and the byte size for the roms they will not appear on the menu
It works in the default theme + the rom link works.. So :/.
That's very strange, I would have to take a look myself.
If you could PM me some details (temp admin account) I can look through your settings to make sure everything is there.
looks like something is wrong somewhere, because Rom 1 at least is set up as you can see the link works

Its a NES emulator, only NES roms (latest NES roms), you can choose upto 5 roms, to be used at any given time.
If DS-Natural does not show drop down menus at all for any menu, then its likely that it will not work at all
It requires a dropdown script which it doesn't have.
Sadly enough, that theme fails.
I'm searching another one :P
Thanks for the help.

You will never have the ability to use the drop down menu, but the links to the rom(s), are as follows
?action=vnesrom1
?action=vnesrom2
?action=vnesrom3
?action=vnesrom4
?action=vnesrom5
Like amigozone said, you can use any portal HTML or BBC block to add these links, that part still works :)

If it doesn't load chances is the path is wrong for the rom.
Its defiantly that, If you look at the source of the generated page and correct the link to *a rom then it works, on that forum.
Hello and sorry for the late response.Rom path should go something like this http:/www.yoursite/public html/then the rom name.By the way is the rom suppose to be in the rom folder in the vnes file?Is it suppose to be zipped or unzipped.Do you have to change the permissions on the file to 755 or 777.Just not sure.I guess it could be an error on my part but this is easy as 123.Could be maybe another mod causing the problem.I see the screen and it just says loading? So im not sure.I have tried everything.
As a matter of fact that could be a possibility, CHMOD the rom to 755 and see, I unzip them, to the ".nes" format, I believe both work though.
I don't see how another mod could be causing a problem, this mod uses its own Source and Template file
Quote
http:/www.yoursite/public html/then
No.
If you put the rom on the root (where you forum is, index.php, ssi.php and so on) the link would be either:
the rom name alone blahblah.nes
or the full absolute path
www.yoursite.com/blahblah.nes
Ok John i will give that a try.
That worked John.I feel like an idiot.Sorry to be such a bother. It was an error on my part. Thanks alot for your help.I will mark this topic as solved ;D

I don't see it anywhere?Could it be a modification english php thing? Not sure.
You have the latest version right? 2.2?
Yes I have got it.
Go to the "general permissions" area and see, their is a permission for each rom, you can let membergroups not only use vNES, but you can restrict them to whichever roms too
Worked a charm
Well done :D

Changes;
Cleaned up the Permissions area.
Add vNES its own configuration page in modification area.
Added the Rom name to the permissions area So you can see which roms your
giving permission to use without having to check back.
Added Game Names (Game title) in Who's Online list

Yes yes...I mostly use my DSi for emulating stuff (got the best card in the market but lets don't continue about cards lol).
But still, I don't think my host allows me to use such a thing, since it encourages piracy.

Any way to get this too work with 1.1.13?
I'm wondering quite the same thing. How much work would I need to do to run this on 1.1.1x? I'm not familiar with the 2.x platform at all, and I'm not sure what I'd need to change. Assuming I can get it running on 1.x, I'm happy to send the author revised versions, plus additional emulator support.
I'm already working on getting two emulators tied into our site and I'm sure I could adapt this for them as well, and possibly more later down the road. (I'm mostly working on integration at present, as they're both fully-operational, which isn't easy when one of them has zero documentation at all, at all.)
At present, I was just going to make an individual page for users on request for each system, but full SMF integration with permissions would be ideal, if possible, for our BBS, which runs v1.1.14.
Of course, if there is already a 1.x version of this, or something that can do the job, I'd love to see that before I delve into forcing this to be happy on 1.x...

vNES is not compatible with '
Arkanoid II', which also has problems on other emulators (including the RetroUSB PowerPak). It wouldn't play well anyhow, considering the lack of the Arkanoid paddle interface, which was bundled with the original Famicom game. '

Mapper 152, if you're wondering.
vNES doesn't handle every NES mapper... See The programmer's website (http://www.thatsanderskid.com/programming/vnes/index.html) and The vNES Changelog (http://www.thatsanderskid.com/programming/vnes/changelog.html)for details.
You should also download the latest JAR file (v2.15) and replace whatever version you're using, unless you are already on 2.15 of vNES; the Virtual NES website uses the outdated v2.13, which lacks support for some titles and has some bugs as well. 2.15 additionally supports using ZIPped ROMs, which eliminates the need to specify file-size and many of the problems with bad-sizes on ROMs in general. There is a manual that details how to implement the emulator, including the commands, though you may want to scan through the sources (also on the vNES site) to see if there are some undocumented commands you'd want to use.
I'm still hoping for a response from the mod author too... It'd be really neat to get this to work on our BBS (1.1.14), and to add stuff like Apple ][ and Atari 2600 engines to it.
OK, so what should I be using in place of the
URL BBCode tag to place a URL in a post, and avoid the NONACTIVE tag; or is that just the bottom-line, that all URLs are non-active?
Its posible to create some mod to play with 2 players members of a forum? that will be nice!
this is similar?

Yes, but it is not possible to integrate that on a forum, because it needs you to play the game on the same computer.
any case, that is an emulator-support feature, and the forum integration wouldn't have anything to do with it. The emulator has to be able to switch control between two remote sources and integrate the NES system memory as a shared resource between them. This isn't impossible, but I don't think any emulator currently out there supports network-play.
If you are interested in this, you should talk to the author of vNES, or hop over to the NESDev forum and discuss it int he Emulators board there.
Is there anybody else here with the relevant skill and experience to transition this project to 1.1.x? I can do it in time, but I have zero experience with the 2.x platform and would be working essentially in the dark, trying to get it to work.
I'm pondering how I'd want to integrate multiple emulators, as the two options are to have discrete panels and scripts for each emulator, which need to not conflict with each other;
alternatively, have a modified script that allows the user to select an emulator from a list, and then select a game (or an emulator+game combo), pointing to the relevant param functions.
I am playing with JStella and sadly it doesn't support AR-games; that means a library of fantastic titles for the Starpath expander won't load, and I think JStella is abandoned. (Many JAVA emulators are pretty dead projects.) I have JAC64 and AppleIIGo working: AppleIIGo is fa easier to use, as JAC64 doesn't appear to have full 1541 emulation. so many copy-protected disk images fail to load.
I also found some other JAVA emulators that I plan to explore: I've been toying with the idea of integrating them before I ever noticed this mod, so it's nothing new, but having full-system-integration with permissions settings would be ideal, as it'd help keep some of the stuff centralised. Some emulators though, would be best kept as individual directories, unique to each user, for the purpose of game saves. It'd be nice to have this as a feature of the mod at some point...
Maybe if you did not know, a forum is COMPLETELY different from a mobile phone... Mobile phones can use local bluetooth, forums do not have bluetooth or any connection between users (it only displays information and elements like any other web software in the market).
A lot of games are played online with multi player, that includes java games, although java scripts run client side, multi player games can be possible, just google it, you will find many exist, they can be integrated into anything, including a forum. You do not really need to have the 2 players using the same computer to have a multi player game, it is possible to have multi player java games work and have the players on different computers (server side emulator). This is just an emulator that emulates a console, it can only support multi-player on the same computer, thats vNES.

Yes, its possible for somebody to create a mod for that, go to mod request board. That can never be implemented in vNES, as that would require the emulator to run server side and the controls from client side.
Add to that the issue of control latency and you're opening a huge can of worms. The idea of split servlet and control applets aside, this would only really be practical for 2-Player alternating[/u] games at this stage, not for 2-player simultaneous games, as the hop-time alone between the two client machines would make a world of problems.
A world of problems if its coded wrong, otherwise, fine.
I've installed this mod along with your gameboy and custom buttons mod, none of these mods show up in the menu bar after setup. I uploaded roms, checked permissions, everything and it does not show up in the menu bar. Could there be a problem with my subs.php permissions? I've tried everything and I still don't get anything to show up in the menu.
I've been trying to get this mod to work. I've tried moving the roms into every directory tree I could think of. I've tried changing permissions of the files on the server.
I could really use some help.

tell me a little more about the problem... 1) do you have vnes in the navigation bar? 2) have you assigned the roms to the slots in the admin>modifications & settings>vnes?
what version is your smf forum?.... i got it installed by parsing the instructions for smf 2.0.2 and manually installing the mod
Is this still being supported? I've been trying to get it working and am at a loss.
SMF version 2.0.6
Using vNES Integration 2.5
Rom size is correct. (bytes, no commas)
Rom location is correct.
vnes settings and permissions are added to my site.
After setting rom 1 and 2, Permissions do not appear for those roms, only 3, 4, and 5 for regular members.
Drop down menu does not get added to my site, not even the default theme.
Direct link to rom does work. (/index.php?action=vnesrom1)
Rom does not load. "Application Error. Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running."
lowered java security settings to medium (lowest).
Java is completely up to date.
Rom's I'm trying to load:
Lode Runner (U) [!].nes (24,592 bytes)
Super Mario Bros. (JU) [!].nes (40,976 bytes)
renamed: (permissions set to 755)
Lode_Runner.nes
Super_Mario_Bros.nes
Uploaded to mysite/forum/vnes/roms/
Am I missing something? do these roms not work?
By the way, I do own the original cartridges.
I tried using Super Mario Bros. with Duck Hunt which was the exact same amount of bytes as shown in the sample pictures. Still no joy. I'm giving up on this, what a shame. I would have loved to have this but it looks like i have to find some other source of entertainment for my members.
i have the same problem, with firefox and internet explorer 11 , "Application Error. Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running."
are there any plans to port this to 2.1x?
