What does it do?The SMF File Management Tool, aka
File Manager/FM adds a simple yet useful file manager to your administration panel.
It allows you to browse all files and sub folders in your SMF installation folder.
You can edit files, remove files and directories, rename files and directories and chmod files and directories.

You've finally finished it then :)
Is it the same as the newest one from your other thread?
It is the finalised and bugfixed version of that other thread, in fact the other thread is now locked.
We were just discussing a problem that this will fix. Thank you :)
Congrats! :)
This has the look of an excellent addition to an admin panel!
Good job Nas, 'et al. ;D
This looks excellent.
Nice work done :)

Well done Nas. ;)
Perfect for people who don't have FTP Access! Great mod, I can see great potential!
Absolutely amazing!!!
Many of us help to manage or fix sites sites other then our own. Often times people will want us to work on their site but can't or don't want to give access to their FTP or cpanel so we can actually get work done. Instead we end up passing files back and forth via email or some type of file sharing and it takes forever to get something accomplished. This mod solves that problem completely.
Now if only we had something like this to manage databases as well. *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*. ;D
Excellent work as always Nas, you've out done yourself again. 8)
Amazing mod, i toyed around with gamma 1 and i must say i'm quite impressed... very helpful for even a noob like me.

Firebug gave these:
Unfortunately, a security hole was discovered in this mod, a subtle one, but a serious one allowing arbitrary file uploads (which of course isn't a good idea)
I would ask that you uninstall this mod for the time being while a security patch is prepared. I have removed the mod from the mod site pending a patch.
Thought I'd update you on this.
First of all, I apologize for this lack of security checks, and I'm glad it was discovered before someone was hit by it.
I'm putting a patch together right now, and I'll send the mod back so that my fellow Customizers can look at it again.
Once it's out, it should be perfectly safe to use this mod again. I apologize for the inconvenience.
I actually never knew that it was possible to hack the script this way, uploading dangerous files to the server without using the ACP form, which proves yet again that you learn something new every day.
Edit: New package uploaded and awaiting review.
The patch is out. The mod should now be secure to use. Again, I apologize for this.
Just to follow up here, if you have already used this mod, you would be strongly advised to update to the current version.
I'd like to thank Nas for resolving this issue so promptly. It just reminds us that the Customizer team are human, they do make mistakes like everyone else, but they're prepared to deal with them :)
Nice Mod ,Thank You.

So this is pretty much most of the things in the server but you can now change it in the admin panel so admins who do not have the server info can change stuff around ?
if so i am downloading right now :)
This lets you view, edit and otherwise manage files without FTP, yes.
Fantastic Mod Nas!!
This will surely help with assisting others, as well as ourselves :P
I agree something similar for the db would be great.
Is there a way to make this accessible 'only' to the admin with id=1 ?
Cheers champ :)
edit:
When I go to edit a template, only the lines before 91 have the highlights(colours), and the rest are normal(black) text.
Is this how it should function?

I have not looked at the code yet, but from what Arantor has taught me about permissions, you should be able to. Just find the lines that say something like "allowedTo(admin_forum)" (or something like that) and replace it with an array for 1.
Like I said, I have not looked at the code yet, so I cannot tell you what exactly those permissions say.
On a different note, I like this mod. It is very useful for when I do not have my file editor available. Thank you for this mod.

Permissions are one of the features I'll add to FM 1.1.
The highlight bug is known, probably an error in the third-party tool it uses. I will look at it (Though, it's always been working for me).
Btw, a customizer mentioned something about javascript memory limit causing it. Try looking at your settings for that.
Cheers kratos,
I already knew that and was indirectly making a suggestion lol ;)
As always, it is already being considered.(permissions)
Thanks for the info Nas, but I'll wait for your update, for even though I have installed it, I have yet to actually use it.
My notepad is hard to let go of lol ;)
Leave it to me :-\
Uploaded this and it said everything was installed successfully. But it shows the following (with all the red x's) and I've got four pages of the same error in the log. How can I fix this, please?
Looks like some sort of issue with your package manager, not this mod. Can you use the file manager properly or do you get that error every time you do something with it?
That's an installation error, probably means there's no temp directory.
That's what I was thinking. (Installation error, I never thought of the temp dir :P)
Hi there !
This mod is once I waited long time ago for SMF 2! A must need for every installation i think!
Thanks a lot for this piece of software!!

It seems to work - no new errors when I try to use it. I even tried uninstalling this and two mods that I had installed before this one and then just re-installing this one only, thinking it had an issue with one of them. Same errors as the first time. The other two mods showed as installing properly and no errors showed up in the logs for those.
If you clear your error log there should be no problem. But you might want to post a topic in the support boards to see if there are issues with your package manager (Copying files and directories from a mod to the server).
Ok, thank you.
Good Work. Will try using it now.

Well, it would be nice to be able to restrict access to only certain admins. I am going to try to take a look at it tonight, if I have time.

Simple solution: don't make them part of the full admin group (group 1)
Just put them in a group that's "diet admin".

True, that is the simple solution, but you have to admit that that is not as much fun as digging into the code.... LOL ;)
Kratos
I'll take simplicity and known-to-work over unknown and untested code more often than not. But code is fun ;D
Thanks for the file manager Nas! I have been missing it since I went 2.x
I cannot seem to upload anything though, it just sits there forever and nothing happens. Any Ideas?

Thanks for this mod, I know it will help me manage things.
I found a minor issue.
When browsing my 'user_avatars' directory, I found a remnant temp file of a user avatar that was uploaded, it was named avatar_tmp_1 (note no extention).
When browsing with the file manager, I got serveral "8: Undefined index: extension" errors in the SMF log at lines:
156 of FileManager.template.php
159, 146, 137, and 127 of Subs-FileManager.php
If I renamed the file to be avatar_tmp_1.png then the errors went away and the file displayed properly.
So it appears the file manager doesn't like files with no extensions??
This is on SMF 2 RC2.
Thanks again for your time on this useful admin tool.
Oops.. want to see a large log of these errors, just browse the 'attachements' directory.
Ah. I really need to add a check for that. Will do that in the next version (Or perhaps release FM 1.0.2 to fix that).
This is great!!! Just started trying to modify a new theme using Firebug, Notepad++, and Filezilla which I am brand new to. Decided to look for a SMF mod yesterday that had line numbers for the code and ran across this one. What Timing. Thank You.
Oh, I forgot to ask; Do I have to empty my cache every time changes are made to the index.css in order to see the changes?
Yes, just like any change to a CSS file, you have to clear your browser cache to see the changes.
Hi,
I can't change my ch-mod of my files for some reason when using this mod....
Any suggestions?
Thank you very much, Nas, for this modification. I waited for something like that since I'm going to test V2.0 since Beta 3 public :)
You already have heard enough about the "extension" error in log :) I saw two other flaws though:
1st: with pictures: the picture path (f.x. when viewing the avatar directory) is currently composed of the http:// forum address plus the complete php file path - in my case http://forum.michgeyer.de/home/pacs/... (http://forum.michgeyer.de/home/pacs/...) , an address which is obviously wrong :( It should be either http://forum.michgeyer.de/avatars/ (http://forum.michgeyer.de/avatars/)<picture_name> or the complete file system path (/home/pacs/... )
2nd: the editor does not work with my browser Opera 10.01, Browser Identification string is :
Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1; U; de) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.01
Hope you can fix that soon, I hate to use IE 6 for editing files - The layout is really a mess with that old browser I only keep for use of some M$ sites :)
Currently working on FM 1.1.
mgrmgr:
1. I can't confirm that, could you please explain further/post a screenshot?
2. What do you mean? Does it not display, does it look wrong, are the line numbers incorrect etc?
Vyache:
What happens when you try to CHMOD a file? Any errors in the log?
Hi Nas,
ad 1 ) see the attached screen shot (attachment 1) of directory Themes/default/images/buttons.
All those pictures on the left don't show up. Reason is the picture address - it shows:
http://forum.michgeyer.de/home/pacs/mgr00/users/doms/doms/michgeyer.de/subs/forum/Themes/default/images/buttons/admin_copy.gif
Just a hint: The forum runs on a shared webspace where the http://<subdomain><domain> is a "shortcut" for the system path /home/pacs/mgr00/users/doms/doms/michgeyer.de/subs/forum (this first part is a fake root for the webserver) and is the folder where SMF is installed.
My domain goes up to and including the folder michgeyer.de. All subdomains are folders in subs of that root domain of my webspace. A correct manual address for the browser is http://forum.michgeyer.de/Themes/default/images/buttons/admin_copy.gif or for php the complete path variant /home/pacs/mgr00/users/doms/doms/michgeyer.de/subs/forum/Themes/default/images/buttons/admin_copy.gif.
The browser address http://forum.michgeyer.de is directly the forum root folder.
This flaw also gives the possibility to leave the forum's root folder and switch to other subdomains in my domain michgeyer.de :( domain (they are all located as different folders in the subs folder below the domain folder michgeyer.de
ad 2)
the window shows up with the text of the selected file shows up in a light gray (see attachment 2) after click on Toggle Highliting the window is empty (attachment 3), and further clicking on the same button toggles between attachment 4 and attachment 3 :( The Toggle Line numbering button does nothing but a slight position change while clicking - same as the button Toggle auto complete.
Btw: I also installed firefox 3.5.5 - with that browser everything works OK - it's just Opera that refuses to work correctly (probably with the JavaScript part).
looks good. I like it... it's much easier for quick file-fixes than using Cpanel (especially when on a PC where I don't have my full editing suite.)
I am seeing the extension error... but that's about it.
nicely done!
Great Job with this MOD. I know it couldn't have been easy. Love the way it looks also.
Cheers :)
Hi. I've got huge problems with this mod, I suppose.
So, there is an SMF 2.0 RC2 with Curve, Russian UTF-8. Once in a while it is just doesn't work:
Warning: Unexpected character in input: ''' (ASCII=39) state=1 in /home/***/forum/cache/data_033dd33b33413ebc1694bd9cd8a9bd8e-SMF-modSettings.php on line 1
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ':' in /home/**/forum/cache/data_033dd33b33413ebc1694bd9cd8a9bd8e-SMF-modSettings.php on line 1
And there are .core files all over the place. So I delete them, clear cache, that's OK, but only for a while, then again, first thing in the morning.
When I uninstall The SMF File Management Tool 1.0.1 everything appears to be fine, but I've got A LOT of errors in logs, like this:
//forum.***/index.php?action=admin;area=logs;sa=errorlog;desc;e69348251ff=822088a10d725d01d673b902ad5ae8b1

Невозможно загрузить 'FileManager.russian-utf8' языковой файл. (Unable to load the 'FileManager.russian-utf8' language file.)
General error
And it's like hundreds of them. What am I supposed to to? It seems like this mod could not be removed completly from the system, and when it's installed there are errors with "Unexpected character in input", so forum doesn't work after a couple of hours.
What are the manual instructions?
Create a file called FileManager.russian-utf8.php in your language directory and translate the content of FileManager.english.php. That should fix it, I believe.
Where exactly should I create that file?
./Themes/default/languages/, sorry.
Thanks, will see what happens :)
Yule Goat
Yes, it IS working, thanks a lot!
But I still getting those damn core-files, although not sure what caused them.
If you're getting core files, that's usually a problem in the physical server configuration, with PHP and/or Apache being miscompiled somehow, or a flat-out bug.
Yeah, maybe. But everything was fine earlier. Don't know what to do.
Ask your host if they recently upgraded.
Allright, will try.
Nope, everything allright out there. But a lot of new errors:

E.t.c. A LOT ~16000. Damn!
Lots core-files, lots trash in cache. Forum is extremly unstable with these. FileManager uninstalled already.
And File Manager link is still seen in "admin". Rrrrr!
What am I supposed to do? How to get rid of that mod?
The only problem so far that I'm having is Firefox with RoboForm2Go and this mod. When I go to edit files and I have RoboForm2Go up and running Firefox crashes if I close out RoboForm2Go before I start editing files it works fine. I'm thinking it's a JavaScript error that is causing it.
I was wondering about those errors, I got them too with the file manager. :(

The SMF File Management Tool.
I downloaded and install this today and when i try to use the editor or click the toggle tags i get the following

Any help would be much appreciated as this looks to be a fantastic tool.
btw i am using 2.0 RC2
I MOVED THIS HERE FROM GENERAL SUPPORT ON aED's ADVICE
Odd. What browser are you using? The script I used for the editor might not be compatible. Or a file might've been broken when you installed it.
i am using firefox 3.5.7
have uninstalled and reinstalled today....still same error

It was unrelated to this. What happened to the spot on error reports. Now I have to search, :(
This mod is not installed on SI. SI is still using SMF 1.1.6.
The filename of the cache disagrees with you.
I am using IE8 and when I am editing a file I use the windows "Find on this page" to find the text I need. It will find the text, then it deletes it for some reason. even if the file is not in the edit mode, it does the same thing.
I have screwed up several files because of this when doing manual edits.
Any fix or way to work around this?
Thanks,
RGecy

Have patience. Nas has been busy with other things lately.
Nice Mod
Please update it for SMF 2.0RC3 ;)
Thanks
I will try to update this mod for RC3, and fix the bugs (and maybe add some new features), sometime after the release of SimpleDesk.
Can't wait! This will be helpful at school, when you can't install stuff on the computers!

Hi there !
With emulate an older version, can i install the mod 1.0.1 at the moment? Want to upgrade my site since almost most mods updated ....
I bump it as well
Well, SimpleDesk is released so... Nas... I think you're allowed a little time off now ;)

Going to download to try it out!
This thing seriously has to be updated. This islike one of my favorite mods cuz I don't have to open FTP programs plus this mod feels cleaner and vetter to look at.
:o
Guess I should get to work. :P
I demand that you do... I might send you a cookie, hope you like grandmas home made :P:P
Hi there !
haha when i send him cookies they will be hard as stones when they will be delivered from austria ;)
But I wish also an update from this mod!
Anyway....
Any new features you'd like to see?
I'd love zipping folders to download and upload zips with ability to unpack them
There's actually an extraction function for zip/rar available in the code, IIRC, but it's non-functional.
there's a chanllenge for you then!
Hi Nas,
I'm assisting another member sort out some errors in his site. He is running 2.x RC3 but had FMT 101 installed prior to the upgrade.
We are seeing this error a lot,.
http://jumss.net/forum/index.php?action=admin;area=filemanager;do=browse;dir=/home2/jumssnet/public_html/forum
8: Undefined index: extension
File: /home2/jumssnet/public_html/forum/Themes/default/FileManager.template.php

Always the same index "extension" but line numbers vary 159, 156, 146 & 137
Also this error:

8: Undefined index: extension
File: /home2/jumssnet/public_html/forum/Themes/default/FileManager.template.php
Line: 156
Could this be due to lack of RC3 compatibility rather than a bug? Should I advise uninstall till the updated version is available?
Ask them what files they've tried to edit.

Well, I tried to upload a repaired subs .php file but the error occurs just by opening the File Management Window from Admin, like this:

Pretty much all that I would expect to see. See attached.
Hmm. I wonder if it's the bug that was noticed ages ago but never entirely fixed.
IIRC it's failing because it's trying to find an extension on a filename that doesn't have one - the folders are (as far as PHP file functions are sometimes concerned) files themselves, albeit with special options attached.
Meh, yeah, I know about that error.
I'll be looking at this mod as soon as I can. But right now, I'm not really in the right mood to..
OK Nas, I know you're busy. It's not causing any problems just filling up the error log. I've told the user to delete them once a week. ;D
Go have a rest, you must be really tired or is your Avatar not Yawning :D
Major problem
Sometimes when I save a edit it will not save the entire file. I have lost lots of work over this and even have crashed my website once.
As best as I can tell if the editor has some format that it doesn't like it will crash on save.
This happened to me when I cut and pasted some sample css code from a css how to website into the editor and can be recreated.
Other wise this is one of the most useful modules I have added to SMF2

Can this be updated for RC4?
Installs fine, but it adds countless spaces onto my files...
Nothing really makes me determined to work on this mod right now. In the future I might rewrite it though and make it work better. It's kinda buggy and outdated right now.
It almost worked for me on RC4. I emulated RC2 it installed correctly except for a edit in Subs.php. I did the edit. Now I get this error:

Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in /home/content/*/*/*/*****/******/Sources/FileManager.php on line 686

really... how many mods do you have installed?
Installed with no problems, but I can't edit any files at all. I still have to go to the cPanel of my host to do that...
is there a reason I can't edit any of the files?
chown or file system permissions, maybe?
I don't know, I changed a file chmod to 777 (as a test) but the text area was still grayed out and I couldn't edit anything. maybe the installation went wrong...(and I remembered it installed with no errors)
reinstalled it, still doesn't work. every file is grayed out, the buttons 'Toggle Highlighting' and all those next to it doesn't work when I click on it
I still cannot edit any of the files! I really want and like this mod because it's SO useful but what's the use of it if I cannot even edit the files?
Hi there!
I would also be happy if this Mod would be updated to SMF2 ... but it seems that there would not be any more support for it.

I should create another forum and see what happens if I install this mod as the first one.
Hi there!
Darling, that is quite a f*cking large list .... yes, try it as one of the first at install. Normally first the forum, then language and style, then portal (if there is any) and then after the size going, also trial and error!
I normally keep the default theme and language and won't install portals.
but I don't know why and how installing other mods would affect EDITING the files. I installed with no errors whatsoever
Hi there!
I really like portals! Just more info at one site!
I also do not know how mods would affect the edit of files, but hey, it´s software ... there could really ANYTHING happen!
So just try ;)
Did you ever find a fix to this problem?
Just tried it on my forum and have the same issue: Can do everything except edit files.
Such a shame so many people have left SMF or just lost interest it seems!
This is a really great mod. I was using it in 2.0RC2 and upgraded to 2.0 Gold and cant get it to work.
I truly appreciate all the hard work everyone puts in to create them, but there are just so many mods out there that havent been updated, it is very frustrating to say the least!
Just think, if everyone donated $1 for each mod they used, maybe these guys would have more interest in keeping them up to date!

so I don't think it's another mod at all. seems to be the mod itself?
Hello
Mod installed perfect and works ok funny enough but I just noticed when clicking on Admin>Maintenance>File Manager
and don't do anymore then that.
I then go to my logs and see 9 errors from this mod...!!!
I also noticed that this mod has not had an update for a long time. will it be updated to 2.0.1.
I use 2.0.1 and I will post my 9 errors in the hope that there is support for this mod still.
I have used it many times when helping others and would like to see it continued.
cheers

don't like to give out ftp details.
apart from the logs errors I have had no problems with this mod

I still cannot edit files
what happens when you go to www.yoursite.com/index.php?action=admin;area=filemanager
do you at least see the file manager?
I have installed this mod on many sites and only maybe a hand full of times had to edit the subs.php
file [both edits].
I think this mod is very easy to install and works every time for me...
apart from the error logs. but them errors are only image icon extension errors
and doesn't effect the running of the mod
I still think this mod should be updated for 2.0.1
it installs and work good on 2.0.1
but you must do the following before installing
OK before installing this mod you want to go to your /source folder edit subs.php
Find
'permissions' => array(
'title' => $txt['edit_permissions'],
'href' => $scripturl . '?action=admin;area=permissions',
'show' => allowedTo('manage_permissions'),
'is_last' => true,
replace with
'permissions' => array(
'title' => $txt['edit_permissions'],
'href' => $scripturl . '?action=admin;area=permissions',
'is_last' => true,
'show' => allowedTo('manage_permissions'),
you will notice the last 2 line are swapped around. save the edit but don't close the file yet
then test your forum and make sure all is still working OK
If it's OK then go and install the mod without errors
I have done this on about 18 forums now helping others out and this mod comes in very handy.
If someone knows anything about updating the install of a MOD can I erg you on to makean update on the install of this mod

Menu Editor has been developed for a long time. There's one thing on my to-do list ahead of releasing it though.
Nice mod but check new version script is not good idea.
If is your server busy, file manager doesn't work... ;)
I still have trouble editing files. mod installs fine, I can see everything, no errors, but I can't edit files at all
The mod is outdated and doesn't work correctly anymore.
Yeahh....I have to add this to the long to-do list I have :P
Installer needs to be updated. I had to do a manual install, and then, it didn't uninstall correctly for me. I've only checked the Subs.php file, but it had multiple copies of the same entries when I uninstalled then reinstalled after. So the uninstaller didn't remove any lines, and the uninstaller didn't show any errors. Also, for some reason the filemanager icon is missing, but that's probably something I can fix myself.
Edit:
I had to upload the icon myself, to my custom theme's directory. Also, this Mod's upload feature is broken. It's probably the ajax bit that's not working correctly. When I try uploading something, the loading bar stays loading forever, unless I click back, or cancel, and apparently the uploader uses Ajax.

The *whole* mod needs to be updated...
If anything the mod needs to be rewritten and redesigned from the ground up. The number of useful things in it are few, and it's generally fugly since I created it back when I was still relatively new to coding and designing, and it hasn't been given any love at all since I dropped it, nor is it likely to ever get any.
There's a chance in the future that I will update this. I would cross your fingers though.

Hmmmm - has anyone (hopefully one of the concerned) a clue how long the "future" is? :)
3,564.24 days
LOL I marked date in my notepad :)
Actually an asteroid may collide with earth on 17 March 2013, so I'd say the future is only 244 days long.
