I been having trouble with a loaded server, I noticed the qps were high, checked and smf has not been able to detect a compatible accelerator.... which must have broken during an OS upgrade or something. Been trying myself to get either EA or APC configured and have no luck, so I asked host to setup, they got EA installed but it broke something because no php pages would load at all. After going round and round with the techs they told EA was not compatable with smf! Is there something with my current setup that EA or APC won't work? Anybody run into this issue?

Is there any reason why you're running such old software?
I tried myself and every time I run into some issue of things not working, php pages not loading ect. I had my host try upgrade php, was a dead end they gave up and they couldn't figure out why the site was breaking after upgrade. Well they got apache updated and it broke eA of course they couldn't fix that either. I've given up I figure if the techs can't do it. So here I sit :( I am in the heat of the season and very uneasy about even trying to do it myself now. I did 800 online fairly smooth last year at this time but I'm in trouble now.. were setting online records and growth is more than expected, the server is not coping at all without an accelorator.. tonight is bad.

Your MySQL is several versions old, as is your PHP. You might want to go with a newer distro.
But if you're getting 1000 online in 15 minutes, I don't think you have enough CPU power in that box. When I was running a similar CPU, I found 300 users in 15 minutes was maxing it out. I would recommend moving to a quad core box.
This traffic is seasonal will only last for another 3 weeks at best. I just need it to survive for that long and then we take a downturn fast. I have two servers available to help. Any help be appreciated on getting this main server up to par. I'd like to try that before I would upgrade.

Your idea offloading of stuff is good.
Disabling features you don't use (e.g. the calendar) will help.
And you should be able to get APC working. I'm not that familiar with Apache though, so I can't help too well there. It will reduce your CPU usage about 30%.
You are running CentOS 5.2, which comes with PHP 5.1.6 and MySQL 5. How did you get PHP 4 and MySQL 4 on there as that is not even offered as a package. Have you enabled third party repos?

An earlier post mentions cPanel. Perhaps it's offered as an option through there?
