Title: One more type of threadicon needed
Post by: klumy on August 05, 2003, 02:36:01 PM
In vBB there is a thread-icon which appears on threads which you have participated on.

There is just a small circle in the normal threadicon like this

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forum-3dcenter.org%2Fvbulletin%2Fimages%2Fdot_newfolder.gif&hash=60af755bcdb417e60e75b011fd70afcce83b5ef8)

instead of this

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forum-3dcenter.org%2Fvbulletin%2Fimages%2Fnewfolder.gif&hash=aefc680e443798451f4272757a18893dc22970c6)

Would this be a good addition for SMF ;-)

I would welcome that, as well.  I've had several requests for that previously.  :)

It wouldn't actually be that hard to do, I suppose... might slow it a little but not much...

hmmmm...

ehm.. based on this theme, i'd say something like this:

Personally, I hate this dot/star thing.  Why should we do it just because vB does?

I'd prefer like a voice box or something... err... bullhorn... I don't know.

Heh, or you can just put it in the same column as the information about the new post. On the board I'm a member of they got flamed arrows to tell you that you have participated on the topic.
A bullhorn would be nice, or prolly a microphone :P

Hmm.. but you're putting it on the post icon, not the thread icon... I mean one with a folder behind it.

I think you're mistaken. This applies to the first column, which indicates the type of topic. But this thread is about the user-selectable message icon.

EDIT: Sorry, forget that last part, I missed a few posts  :P

But, what if you pick a smiley for your message icon?  The message icons are per post not per thread.

well, correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think that matters.. the icon that the thread-starter chooses, it the one displayed in message Index. so that's the only place it needs to be displayed..

does that make sense?  :D ???

The topic starter can pick what thread icon to use

Maybe i just need to get some sleep already  ;D but methinks the topic starter chooses the message icon (light bulb/thumb up/etc), not the thread icon.

The latter one would be absolutely perfect. Don't take up much space and it's easy to understand. The transparent wouldn't work in all the browsers. And who can make a copyright of a + sign?

Guys, this is why it isn't being done for all states.  If the thread is locked or sticky it will not be done.

no need to show anything, since there's no new replies anyway :P
if you still want to show something, just put a new image beside the [new] icon, will be easier than changing message icon, or topic icon

I should remove the treadicons "Sticky Poll", "Locked Sticky Topic" and "Locked Poll" from the legends on the index-pages. Users are smart enough to understand that a poll icon with a lock means a closed poll.
The more buttons, icons and links are on each page, the more it's hard to use SMF for newbies.

If the icons will not be removed, add an icon "locked sticky poll" :P

The legend can easily be removed with the template system.

I was hoping NOT to get a whole new query PER topic.  At least just one extra query... I'm playing with how to do this.

Well, this set is not going to be used for the current SMF theme, it's just to show the different types of thread icons that may be needed. Other than that, this set is just for my own theme i'm going to create when SMF is released.

So in fact, for me, it IS final  ;)

I often like to know if I posted in a thread that was locked.  If it was locked since I last saw it, if I posted in it normally I will go read and see why.  If I hadn't I won't.

I think Sep|roth is right...

And another reason why i think his idea is good: the Threadicon normally shows the status of the thread... locked/hot/sticky/poll .... if someone has participated in this thread is in my opinion a different kind of information.... so i think its a good idea to put the icon in front of the subject...
