Hi all,
my hoster did change the server , so I must now
install a backup.
Yeasterday as the forum still worked, I did from the admin panel in SMF 1.03
a backup of the SQL Database with all
the checkboxes clicked there, so also with tables, etc...
Now on the new server the SMF 1.03 was properly installed but did not have the
postings in it...
I first deleted the installed SQL database via CPanel
and then tried to upload the latest backup sql file: smf1
(I uploaded it without an extension, because this way it looked
like before in CPanel !)
So I used the CPanel
to upload the
uncompressed smf1 database file. (uncompressed from the .gz format)
Now when calling up overunity.com it is only giving me:
Table 'overunit_smf1.smf_settings' doesn't exist
In: Settings Repair Tool
there are also only 3 pathes,
before there were many more !
It only shows:
Forum URL:
Recommended value: "http://www.overunity.com".
Forum Directory:
Recommended value: "/home/overunit/public_html".
Sources Directory:
Recommended value: "/home/overunit/public_html/Sources".
Please HELP.
How can I restore the forum ?
Many thanks !
Regards, Stefan.
Why is there no "Restore Backup" function in the admin panel in Version 1.03 ?
This is the biggest downer since I have used the forum.... :'(
Is this available inversion 1.1 ?
Do you have a back-up of the database? If so, you can simply re-upload your database with that excellent dump importer (http://www.ozerov.de/bigdump.php).
Yes, I still have the overunit_datexxxx_smf1.sql.gz file,
which was the newest backup from yeasterday in the admin panel.
I now saw, that I could use from CPanel the PHPMYADMIN
and tried to upload the renamed Database file smf1.sql.gz
over there,
but it gives me the following error:
Server: localhost
Error
SQL-query:
# ==========================================================
#
# Database dump of tables in `overunit_smf1`
# May 15, 2005, 04:05:47 AM

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `smf_attachments`
MySQL said:
#1046 - No Database Selected
Okay, I will now try with this other bigupload...thing...
Where is the path for the SQL file ?
Why can´t it be just uploaded via FTP ?
Why is there no "1 click and finish tool" to upload
a SQL database generated by SMF 1.03 ???
****just read the posts more thoroughly, this probably wont help****
See http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18350.0
it works superbly I tried it yesterday.
My advice is use the backup script to create a new backup, then the restore script to restore.
I got problems with a phpMyAdmin dump.
Hope this helps
Hi All,
okay, I now used the
restore script from over there to restore
the SQL database.
It did work only, after I did
in CPanel first a new database with the name:
smf1
Then the restore went through with still one warning:
Notice: Undefined index: line in /home/overunit/public_html/restore_backup.php on line 181
Restoration process complete!
Congratulations! Your database backup has been restored successfully.
Attempt to fix the database's paths for this server.
I then clicked the checkbox with
Attempt to fix the database's paths for this server.
and then I don´t know, if he did anything still then.
Anyway, I then used repair_settings.php
to restore all the settings and this went through also
fine.
Now the username and password of the Database
is diferent then before! Now the username/password is
the same as my FTP login !
At least now the forum works again.
Hmm, I hope this message
Notice: Undefined index: line in /home/overunit/public_html/restore_backup.php on line 181
does not have any impact for the forum....
So what is now the best backup method for the forum ?
Is it best to backup the forum only via CPanel ?
Can I just there backup the smf1.sql database file from over there ?
Or what is the difference ?
Or should I also backup directly out of the admin section
of the forum the database ?
Or is it just enough to backup each day the now about 60 Mbytes
of a full backup ?
But 60 Mbytes is quite a lot.
I would prefer just to save the full backup only once a week
and maybe only each day the attachment directory and the smf1 sql file .
Should this be done out of CPanel ?
Can a CPanel smf1.sql backup also again be imported back from
CPanel ? (I did not have a smf1.sql backup from CPanel, just from the admin section !)
So, what is the best and least data intensive backup and restore method ?
Many thanks.
Regards. Stefan.
P.S: What is in CPanel this alias and Filters backup ?
Wherefor is this ?
What is the maintenance mode used for in repair_settings.php ?
Can this way the forum be disabled during backup or restore time ?
Is it best to enable it, during backup and restorings ?
regards, Stefan.

Yes, you don't want people posting while you are in the middle of downloading/restoring a database.
did you check 'Settings.php' file in your forum folder.
in this file you can change database name etc.
So I am still a bit confused, what is the best method to do a backup
and a restore of the forum ?
Ca it be done just form CPanel ?
What must all be saved in CPanel to have the right restore
files available to also restore it completely via CPanel control panel ?
Please post your best methods.
Many thanks.
Regards, Stefan.
your host can support for this.
1. make an standart empty installation on cpanel
2. look insatalled smf database (for example: smf1.sql) name.
3. copy your backup in host area.
4. ask from your hoster import your backup to smf1.sql
thats all :)
Hi,
I need to do it myself !
So what is the best method for this ?
Can I just do it myself via Cpanel somehow to restore
the complete SMF forum incl. SQL database easily ?
Thanks.
Regards, Stefan.
If you have a bakup from cpanel, you can restore it within cpanel.
Ben,
Yes, I have a backup of the total homepage backup or how it is called in
CPanel.
Will this also restore the SMF1 SQL Database from SMF ?
Thanks.
Regards, Stefan.
I still recommend using http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18350.0
Only one that worked for me on a medium sized forum so far.
How would I do it,
when I move from a CPanel controlled
hosting to a Plesk virtual server hosting ?
I would like to use now this Plesk control panel,
cause I get the best and cheapest hosting package only
there. There they don´t have WHM/CPanel at hosteurope.de
So how could I best backup my forum from CPanel
and move it to the Plesk controlled VPS server ?
Many thanks.
Regards, Stefan.
I'm assuming you still have access to your old cpanel server
get create_backup.php (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=18350.0;attach=3099)
upload it and run it to create a backup file.
download the backup file and upload to the new server.
Get restore_backup.php (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=18350.0;attach=3100)
upload it to the new server and run it to create the new DB.
This is what i would try, or am I missing something?
No, that should work. It fixes the tables automatically.
Why can't they simply add a restore to the admin, seems like this is a long time issue that is not being resolved in any way. I did a search and this has been discussed as far back as 2004, 3 years! Wow, why is this not been fixed?
Hi,
I am going through the old unsolved support topics. I believe that the response that I got was there are too many potential security issues with a restore function being built into SMF. Details weren't given as to what the problems would be but the source was one of the developers (if I recall - this was a while ago) so I am inclined to believe them.
Hi,
I am going through the old unsolved support topics. Did you get this resolved? If not you can use your DB backup from cPanel to import into a new database as needed.
not yet...
