Title: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: Beefstick on March 01, 2010, 03:43:01 AM
Please help!

I'm a forum newbie and I was trying to create a test site.  In following the directions I tried to install smf on the test site and now my actual site says it's upgrading!  I got an error and the upgrade didn't work!

At this point, screw the test site.  How do I get my site back to where it was?  I deleted the test database and everything.

Please help!!  :( :-[

The site is www.favoriteroads.com

Ok...I did a home directory backup and ended up getting two fatal errors for simple portal.  I put // in front of the two lines mentioned and now my site is up but my portal isn't showing.  :-[

I get fatal errors whenever I try to access anything in simple portal in the admin section. :(

I'm confused...

You say you couldn't install, coz it upgraded, then you say you have problem with SP.

How could you install SP, if the install didn't work?

If it's just a test forum, why not install, again, from scratch?

Sounds like you downloaded the upgrade package, instead of the install one.

Post by: Beefstick on March 01, 2010, 04:58:12 AM
It was the upgrade package.  :-[

I feel like I'm getting deeper here.  I've tried a couple more things and now I get a parse error at my site.  I already had simple portal installed before I screwed it up.  I THOUGHT I was modifying a test site, but I was actually modifying my real site!

My blood pressure is through the roof right now.  :(

This is where a recent backup could save your life...

If not, it might pay you to get the v1.1.11 install archive, dearchive it on your computer, then upload everything in it EXCEPT Settings.php and install.php, overwriting what's there, now.

That'll most likely screw any mods that you have, though, and you'll need to reapply them.

I took a home directory backup and database backup before messing with anything but I still can't get it back to where it was. :(  After restoring I'm getting errors.  Then I messed with things more and may have screwed up my subs.php file?  Wouldn't anything be fixed in a home directory restore?  I don't know what to do and I'm freaking out. :(
Title: Re: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: kat on March 01, 2010, 05:37:29 AM
Yeah. Been there, a few times, myself!

Try a full restore of the backup, both Home directory and database.

If you think it's only subs.php that's the problem, though, you could try uploading a virgin copy of that file from the install package, first.

Post by: Beefstick on March 01, 2010, 05:49:30 AM
I just restored both the database and home directory and my site shows up as a blank page. :(

I think I'm going to have a heart attack!

Edit:  I just uploaded and overwrote the subs.php file and it's still a blank page...

Just been investigating...

Is your forum inside a subdirectory, rather than in the root of public_html?

If you PM me your ftp login details, I'll take a look, if you want.

Please read this, first, though:

Now that I'm not going to get any sleep anyways, how hard/stupid would it be to just uninstall smf, then install SMF2.0 RC2 and import my database?  Would that even make sense?  This is very new to me.

You have no idea how much I appreciate your help here. :)
Title: Re: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: kat on March 01, 2010, 07:01:45 AM
No sweat, mate.

We've all been where you are, at some stage, honest!

I don't think that'd work, because v2.x makes alterations to your database, when you upgrade. Might work, if you reinstall v1.1.11, connecting it to your db, then upgrading.

How are you restoring the stuff?

Have you tried CPanel>Backups?

Thing that made me wonder just where you have SMF installed, is because I'd expect to see something if I go to http://www.favoriteroads.com/SSI.php and I'm not getting anything. That's what made me think that you may have installed your forum into a subdirectory of public_html.
Title: Re: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: Beefstick on March 01, 2010, 07:04:20 AM
Yea, that's where I did the file restores.  So, maybe I should just delete smf, then reinstall 1.1.11 and "connect" (?) it to my database.  I made some mods to my theme which would suck to lose, but not having the site up sucks worse! :(

Edit:  If this makes any difference, there IS an ssi.php file in the html folder.

I'm restoring the home directory and database once more and I will PM you the info. :)

Edit:  Also, somehow in doing all of this, I'm basically using my entire storage for my hosting package...before this I had about 160mb left?  :-\

Although, I could probably get the ftp details, from CPanel, if you send me your cpanel URL...

Looks like your problem is that your forum no longer knows whether it's v1.1.11 or 2.x.

If that was my forum, I think I'd run the SMF v2.0RC2 large upgrade and see what happens.

Well, it was 1.1.11. LOL

I tried to see if it would take the upgrade before (after all of this started), assuming that a home directory restore would bring it back to where it was and it gave me errors when trying to run the upgrade.  I am so confused at this point and I think everything I've done has just made it worse and worse.  I was getting undefined index errors when I tried to upgrade last.
Title: Re: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: kat on March 01, 2010, 07:52:42 AM
OK... You have a backup...

Here's what I think the problem is. You tried the upgrade. During that upgrade, the database wasn't altered for v2. The files sure look like they did, but the database is throwing up errors, coz the files are trying to make calls that the database doesn't understand, by the look of it.
What happens, if you just try to restore the database?

Had an idea, whilst typing that...

Get on to your host, PDQ. They MAY have a backup of their own, that they could restore, for you.

Just had another idea...

Found a Fantasico backup, on your site, dated earlier today. (That might be where all the space went)

I'm just downloading it, to see if that could be helpful.
Title: Re: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: Beefstick on March 01, 2010, 07:58:49 AM
Basically, I just made a complete mess of it?  LOL

I'm tempted to go to sleep (maybe), then delete smf, reinstall 1.1.11 "connect" (?) it to my database, then upgrade to RC2?  Since it's down anyways, I might as well do something I suppose (if that would even work/make sense).  All of this happens when I have a giveaway ending in 18 hours. LOL!  :-\ :-[
Title: Re: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: kat on March 01, 2010, 07:59:19 AM
BINGO!

That looks like all v.1.1.11 files.

If you download that, dearchive it and upload all the files and directories to your site, you might just get lucky!

Look in "fantastico_backups" and you'll see the file.

Awesome thanks!

Maybe if "we" (you) can get this up and running, then I should mess things some more and try the upgrade to RC2? (http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq110/Speedo_Ghost/Smiley/A_laughing_matter.gif)

;D I'm getting slap happy I'm so tired at this point.  :o

Edit:  I'm watching the errors you're getting change, and that's where I was at exactly 4 hours ago by the way before I started messing with it more.  :o

}

// Change the seed.
updateSettings(array('rand_seed' => mt_rand()));

I had a look at subs.php~ and it's all there, so I just copy/pasted it to subs.php.

Once the theme's uploaded, I'll copy it over and we'll see how we go.

Odd, coz there're loads of tinyportal files, there. Just look around. There are LOADS of files and directories with "tp" at the front.

Unless they're for something else, that is.

I see from your "backups" directory, inside "Packages", that you've tried six times to install SP. There're a couple of TinyPortal install backups, there, too.

Well, we have a known-to-be-working backup, now. So, why not try it?

If you get any errors, when you go to apply it, just abort the install.

I think I'm sort of screwed with that one!  Any idea why I can't track IPs either?
Title: Re: Help Please! Forum is down!
Post by: kat on March 01, 2010, 08:44:24 AM
No idea with the IP thing, I'm afraid. Never used it. ;)

Those failed tests... You could try to make the edits manually.

Just check the parser on the SP download page. It'll need quite a bit of manual editing with the custom themes you have, too.

You have a backup, after all. If you screw an edit, you can always replace it with a copy of the one from the Fantastico backup that you have.

Bloody lucky that I found that backup, innit?

I dunno why I even thought to look, there, for that.

Must've been either pure luck or some kind of divine intervention, that. ;)

You are awesome!  I owe you a dinner.  ;D

I will likely try to make the edits since the homepage was a big part of my site.  Now that I have a local copy of that backup, and I free up the space on my server right?

I'm not exactly what's involved in an upgrade to RC2, but I'm not to sure I want to know now... :o

No sweat, mate. Glad I could help, Honest!

Upgrading will DEFINITELY screw most, if not all of your mods.

As I said, my site's v1.1.11 and it'll stay that way, until v2 goes Gold and other people have worked out all the bugs.

I'm playing with RC3 on my test site and, I have to say, I MUCH prefer v1.1.11, anyway.

Yeah, you can free-up the space by deleting that backup, now that you have it on your computer.

I'm guessing, though, that the backup will be done, again, automatically, when Fantastico feels like doing it. So, you'll lose that space, again.

Mind you, you could probably gain quite a bit of space by deleting all that Tiny Portal stuff, if you don't need it.

Just to check something, try going to Admin>Packages>options. At the bottom, "Standard" will already be checked. Hit "Change file permissions" and wait for a while, for it to propagate through.

Does that help?

If not, perhaps you could set up a temporary admin account, for me, and I can have a butcher's, for you.

Definitely.  I will do that as soon as I can get to a computer (been replying from my phone).  Again, thank you so much!

I will post once it's been created. :)

OK, mate!

It's sex bed time, here in England, so I won't be doing anything 'til tomorrow, anyway. ;)

Done!

You can use the same login that you already have.  Again, I can't thank you enough for all of this!

I noticed I had a member awaiting activation.  So, I created a test account to see if I would get an activation email and I haven't. :(

I checked the restration settings in the Admin panel, and it's messed up too. :(

Here's a picture:

ETA:  I still haven't gotten an activation email in my yahoo account, but I had my moderator create a test account and he got an email but it's completely blank (subject and body)!  The new member joining emails that are sent to me are also blank now. :(

Right.

I just change the theme, for that account, to the SMF default and it's the same.

Sooo.... Looks like something in that theme's directory's not there, or something in "Sources".

I'll have a look around and see if anything leaps out at me.

Well, I replaced all the files in "Sources" with files from the SMF install package and it's made no difference, so I'm putting the ones you had, there, back.

Just gonna try the same with the default theme's directory. (Don't panic, I'm keeping the originals safe). ;)

Now for the language files...

It was the language files...

What I've done, is replaced all the English language files.

Everything seems OK, now.

However, if something's weird, because of that, what I've done, is I've put all the original files and zipped them up, in case you need them. You'll notice a zip file inside your default theme's "languages" directory, named "languages.zip". That contains all the original files that I replaced, should you need them, for some reason.

Everything else is as-was, before I started snooping around. :)

I only touched the English files. I'd suggest you delete all the other language files, unless you need them. Quite a few of them are zero-bytes in size, so they're probably corrupt, anyway.
