Title: how do i block words from being posted?
Post by: steve51184 on April 11, 2010, 05:23:43 PM
i'm getting spammed like crazy from what seems to be posting bots posting links to a certain site (all the same) and wanted to know if i can block topics from being made if they contain certain words (or domains/links in my case)

i do have a captcha so they must be manually registering then ether posting the links manually or via a bot ether way i need to block this as there REALLY spamming my forum and it's getting to be a lot of work to delete all the topics and ban the members

any advice or ways to block certain words/links?

you can block links for certain groups, see Spam Prevention on mods site

edit: I meant: you can block links for certain groups based on post count, see Spam Prevention on mods site

that blocks ALL links based on post count i need to just block a certain link... i don't want to block my whole site that have less then x posts from posting links :(

best option is for x membergroup to NOT be able to post links from x domain :)

just ONE link? why don't you censor it then?

that doesn't stop the problem of having SO many people/bots posting the link over and over and spamming the forum with topics that i have to remove

i 'got it' did you read my last post? :)

replacing the domain i want to block with another word won't stop the problem will it?

why not if I may ask? what is so special in your case that it won't work?

if you don;t like this solution, then have a look on other mods, and plan different approach

you seem to be misreading what i'm saying... i don't want to change the link to something else i want to block it from being posted altogether all i'm having to delete HUNDREDS of posts and ban hundreds of members that are spamming my forum but if i can block this link from being posted then it'll solve the problem

changing the link to something else won't do a thing :P

so why don't you delete all that posts, ban those users and then censor the website address, in the meantime trying other mods to prevent regitration of spammers in first place?

why don't you want to tackle the source of your problem, and prefer to fight the results?

i've done that but a few hours later i have 10 new members with 50 new posts and i have to do it ALL over again... and again... etc

there not spammers there just normal users posting links to a site that i don't wan them to so 'traditional' spam blocking mods won't work

there isn't really a way to block them that i know of...

What is your forum url and what version of SMF do you have ?
Are you sure its not bots that are registering ?
Didi ypu enable anti spams on the forum ?

let's summarize:
- you have users posting unwanted links
- you don't want to obfuscate/censor those links
- you don't want to delete users or punish them otherwise
- you don't want to delete those posts

so what is really that you want? the only idea I can see is to hire someone to do your job for you, if you don't intend to stop it
seriously, why not use moderation tools provided with smf and give them warning, and then ban them for a certain amount of time if they won't cooperate?

of course, you can always request a mod that will check the post before being posted against any word/link, which I presume will be what you're after

smf 2.0 rc2

i'm sure yes... it's just random users spamming links

and yes i've tried them and they did nothing

again your misreading what i'm saying...

i AM censoring the links
i AM banning members
i AM deleting the posts

but more members are just joining the site and doing it all over again and i'm having to delete hundreds of posts a day and ban the members

a simple way to block a link/word would fix this

giving them a warning does nothing and they still spam and yes i do ban them after that but when you have 20 members spamming and as soon as i ban them all and an hour or two passes i have more and have to do it all over again.. it's a never ending cycle :(

spot on... this seems to be the only option unless anyone can suggest otherwise.. also THIS (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=467) mod can do it but it's for 1.1.4 :\

that's not really what if after as that will stop ALL members from posting links (under the set post count that is...) and i just want to block a few domains etc

Why no post-moderation for the spamming members and for new members ?

I am 95% sure that these aren't real people! Instead they are bots most likely.

Do they answer back to threats?

Also, if these are people then you must have some big enemies who have more then enough time in their hands to change IP address and hostnames.

well i have a captcha and a question thing and they get past that so if they are bots then they set the bots up after they manually register

Just use post-moderation for the newbie group.

And yes, all new users you should have to approve their first few posts (3 is enough) but you are sure no spam messages are published on your forum anymore.

I use this system and members in the highest membergroups are able to aprove posts zo I don't have to do that myself.

I am looking for a similar mod that will allow me to prevent my users from making posts containing links to specific sites as well.  Righthaven.LLC is suing bloggers and forum owners for copyright infringement if any portion of their articles are used, even if the posts fall within federal Fair Use law.  Our moderators actively monitor links that get posted, but I would feel more comfortable if there was some kind of stricter enforcement.

In the permission settings.
Set Newbies to be unable posting withouth aproval and set VIP-members to be able aproving post waiting for aproval.
Just two settings.
Beware of the regular membergroup, they sould also be unable to make a post withouth aproval because ALL members are in the regular membergroup.
