Title: Guest with IP 0.0.0.0 address
Post by: Rah on August 27, 2010, 07:03:06 AM
I have a "Guest" almost residing/squatting om my Forum site, almost for 48hrs "reading" the same topic.
The Ban trigger for IP: 0.0.0.0 is not working.
How is it possible that a "Guest" can visit my Forum, with IP 0.0.0.0, and how can I stop this madness???
Thanks!

Have a look here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=383614.0

It is caused due to IPv6. You should either ask your host to disable it or if you own the server, do the needful to disable it depending on the operating system.

Thanks, (F.L.A.M.E.R), I've read the link, and understand now, why IP displays 0.0.0.0.
I'll just have to "baby sit" my "Guest" afterall.........................................lol!

If I may,
that is a good topic although the only thing that I can find is to 'ban trigger' the 0.0.0.0 ip address; instead as an alternative to possibly warn as opposed to a ban is there a 'block trigger' to block certain ip addresses etc and not outright ban them right off and maybe issue a warning or something before a ban?
Thanks.

You need to disable IPv6 if you want to ban them or else you might ban every single person. Issuing warning should work fine.

But how do you do that within the Admin Center is there a setting?

Disabling IPv6 is something that only your host can do. There is nothing that you can do externally.

So if I understand correctly then, if I ban say ip address 0.0.0.0, then if someone attempts to use that ip address and registers they will be banned?

Will they get a message or email and will it put it in a que so that I can resolve that and give them the option of removing the problem before they can register?

Thanks.
