Simple Machines is very happy to bring you SMF 1.1 Beta 3 Public. We hope that those of you eagerly awaiting the public release of this new version of SMF will be happy with the changes we have made. This is, however, a beta release. If you are uncomfortable with beta versions of software, we strongly suggest you continue using SMF 1.0.x for now. If you do upgrade, it will not be possible to "downgrade" except by using a backup.
SMF 1.1 has changed in many ways from SMF 1.0. Problems have been fixed, bottlenecks have been identified, features have been added, and code has changed. Mods and themes which worked with previous versions may very well not work without significant change with this new version. This includes integration with Mambo, MKPortal, and Coppermine. If you are not comfortable with this, please do not upgrade to this version.
If you find any problems or have any comments, we wish to hear them, as always. Please remember, however, that not every feature wanted can be added, and we are approaching the release candidate phase for this version, which will mean no new features except in specific cases.
If you feel you have found a security hole or very serious bug, it is best to email
[email protected] to make sure the correct people are notified. However, if it is not critical, it will be more quickly addressed if it is posted to SMF Coding Discussion (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=60.0) or General English Support (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=9.0). For any other problems, please post in the appropriate section of General English Support (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=9.0).
Some of the most notable changes from the previous versions are:
- A faster and more optimized search feature, utilizing fulltext if configured to.
- Members may now request the text of replies in notification emails.
- Many of the administrative sections have been changed greatly to facilitate easier configuration.
- The package manager has, from feedback provided, changed in many ways to prevent the problems people have encountered in the past.
- Message labels may now be used to sort personal messages.
- Members using WAP2 or I-Mode can now check and send personal messages.
- Many improvements to the BBC parsing engine, including better XHTML compliance and [html] and [nobbc] tags.
- Calendar events now more seamlessly span multiple days, and can be posted without a corresponding topic.
- SMF now takes advantage of shared memory when possible (which is great for larger forums; post or search for "cache_enable" for more information.)
- Better ban system with grouping and easier administration.
- Simplified permissions management.
- More secure password hashing on login and in storage.
- As advertisements like to say, "and much, much more..."
Please check the changelog.txt file for a much more detailed list of changes. Make sure to clear your schedule, it's a long and dry read.
Unfortunately, this release does have a known problem with attachment thumbnails; if you enable that option, you may have problems with excessive memory usage on some versions and configurations of PHP. We're not sure what is causing this bug, and we're still working on solving it, but it shouldn't be a problem for most people.
Upgrading from your current version of SMF to the latest version could not be simpler, merely follow the standard procedure of executing upgrade.php. But, please remember to make a backup!! The upgrader will upgrade any installation from YaBB SE 1.5.5 all the way up to the latest version of SMF. You can always find information posted here about things like installation (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6765.0), upgrade (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6832.0), and more.

Well my first impressions of SMF 1.1 are very good. :D
The upgrade was very easy as usual. The only problem I had was that after upgrading there was a blank category and blank board inside it which I could not edit through the Manage Boards section. But it was no problem, I simply deleted it using MYSQL. ;)
I really like how the admin cp has been changed so much. Much better navigation now.
Some of my favorite new features are:
+ Clicking on the new post indicators next to each board allows you to go to all unread posts in that board.
+ You can now edit all template files instead of just index.template.php.
+ There is an inline theme previewer when editing the CSS file. You can view any page on your board on it also. (Very Cool!)
+ Previewing a post no longer refreshes the page (As I have seen here for quite some time now)
+ I also like the "Generate Reports" feature.
+ The [html] and [nobbc] tags

Please all remember before you update, most of 1.0.x MODs wont work with this beta. Downgrade isnt possible. Make backup with all your files, including msql database, before you upgrade this version.

No, this is not available via the package manager because it is a major and very large update. There will not be any official way to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1 through the package manager.

You are also using an old database. You have either done the same thing or not run upgrade.php. Did you read the readme.html?

I also found... Page doesn't have a title to it, it just shows the url.

DB Requirements Question
The installation guide for 1.0.x

Now with the 1.1.3 upgrade the requirements change?
smf_1-1-beta3p_upgrade/readme.html says - MySQL 3.23.6 or higher.
I am running MySQL 3.23.56. Am I out of luck?

I want to upgrade my 1.0.5 forum to 1.1 beta 3 public....i have done a backup via the Forum Maintence section and got a zipped file that won't open, also did an unzipped one that is a notepad file that appear to contain everything ever done on the forum...
If the upgrade goes wrong...how do i restore my forum using the backup?
And do i need to backup the SQL database seperately?
why not to take a site backup through cpanel....... if anything goes wrong simply upload it.......................but better to wait for some expert `s reply..

Is there anyway of getting it back? I tried to do a restore from the backup I made but nothing has happened to restore it

You're fine. 3.23.6 is older than 3.23.56. That said, the newest version of 3.23.x is 3.23.58 iirc, and I wouold STRONGLY suggest 4.0.x if at all possible.

While I do appreciate the bug report, I also suggest you consider asking your host if it's possible to upgrade. SMF should work on MySQL 3.23.x, but it's written for 4.0.x and higher.

As I said above, no. Not for major updates. It's a big change and requires a lot of things be done by the upgrader.
If you want it to do that to keep your mods, you're crazy. Mods won't work with 1.1 because the code is different - trying to retain them would either make SMF not work, or make the mod not work.

Probably won't cause any issues unless you have an accelerator installed such as mmcache or eAccelerator.
If it's using the caching features, it will come up with call to undefined function cache_get_data and won't do anything but give that error.

You should be relatively fine then, depending on just how much you modify. SMF upgrades are meant to leave as many database modifications as possible intact.

Well, I assume you've made a backup, right? If so, drop the "smf_banned" table. It is not used in 1.0.

I just upgradce to 1.1 beta and everything is perfect. Very good version.
But now I have a problem with my chat. I use the user and password of the forum database to enter the chat but now the password is not acepted. I think that I need to change something in the password encryptation.

SMF 1.1 now uses sha1 for its password encryption. As we said - integrations that worked with 1.0 will most likely not with 1.1.

Ok I'm going to be running the upgrade on my test forum just to make sure I don't foo boo the upgrade for my live site. However when I look into the upgrade version (downloaded file smf_1-1-beta3p_upgrade.tar.bz2) I don't see an upgrade.php file nor do I see this file in my forum's directory? Do I need to download the upgrade script separately?
Are you sure? There should indeed be an upgrade.php file in that archive.

Some noob questions so I know what I'm doing. I'm using 1.05:
1. When you say do a back up, is doing it thru SMF ok, or thru cpanel better as I've modded/hacked some files
2. Will the upgrade replace all existing 1.05 files, so any mods or hacks won't work/get written over with new files?
3. Do I need to uninstall existing mods to do the upgrade?
4. When the final 1.1 is released, will this overwrite all the beta 1.1 files again, so any re-applied mods/hacks to the beta will have to be done again? So it may not be worth upgrading to the beta at this stage and just wait until final release?

Backing up through SMF *should* be fine - it only does the database though. Can't hurt to do a cPanel backup once a while.
SMF 1.1 Beta 3 will remove all mods/hacks - yes.
You do not need to uninstall mods before installing 1.1 Beta 3
1.1 Final will also overwrite all mods. We only do package upgrades for small updates (For example 1.0.4 -> 1.0.5) - it's impractical to make them work properly with updates with thousands of lines of code changed.

well not one to shy away from the opportunity to break things i installed and upgraded - unsuprisingly it went very smoothly and within 5 minutes my forum of 900 members and 50,000 posts was happily sat on 1.1.3 - seemingly without any issues at all.

Many sites (like mine) are on 1.0.5, and are likely to remain in the 1.0 branch if they've any meaningful number of customisations since they can't upgrade. Yet new future sites and mods will be in 1.1.
Will you keep maintaining the 1.0 branch so we can retain our old sites knowing that they are as secure as the latest version, and that mod authors can keep taking care of our needs as the world of forum evolves?
I don't mind I can't upgrade, but I would mind if I'm going to lost support because I'm using an older branch.
I just want to say thank you for the stress-free experience of upgrading. I was terrified before I started, but the how-to in the installing help forum held my hand all the way :D

He may not be confident using beta software, we recommend that only those who are happy to take the risk of messing their site up use it. That said, the chances of it going wrong are slim as it's been used on lots of sites while in beta and during development.
Some people naturally will feel more confident sticking with 1.0.5 for now.

Good point. I have found it to be stable, although generally when I see software in beta I don't tend to use it.. I guess I have found SMF to be competent in the past and so went straight into using 1.1 Beta 1.

If you diff the old files with the new, you should see them. Modifying the default theme makes things difficult, if you did that.

Yes, we will. But, eventually, we will drop support for it. I'm not sure exactly when, but it will be months and months along - maybe years. We haven't talked about that yet.
As for mods, I would suggest updating to 1.1 for that. It's unlikely mod authors will want to maintain mods that work with 1.0 and 1.1, in the long run. When we release the next major version, 1.0 will be very old news. And, most of the people in this topic - you'll read - have upgraded their versions. While I know people will stay on 1.0, a lot of people (especially the people who love to have mods installed) will be upgrading. Further, because 1.1 is more efficient, I would guess large forums would all be updating too - at least, eventually.
Porting your modifications over isn't hard, and is often just as easy as a diff. Since the source code to SMF is several megs, I'd doubt you've movidifed so much that it would be better to stay with 1.0 than to go with 1.1.
That said, I'm not meaning you should update to this beta by any means. But, we recommend and encourage updating to the final version of 1.1, when it is available.

I would argue this is a bug in Firefox; it should store the typed value, even if some onsubmit logic changes it. This stands to reason, because the saved value is only going to be changed the same way when entered again.
You may wish to at least ask about this over at http://forums.mozillazine.org/. If that doesn't help, I suppose you might be able to drag out of me how to disable the hashing.... but I'd prefer not to have it disabled.

I'm going to report it as a bug, thanks. I've noticed that if I delete the onsubmit attribute of login forms the hashing is disabled and login still works. I'll do this as a temporary fix.

It was the fastest installation ever, I think creating the Database through cPanel took longer than installing. Wow!

Well, I like but do not understand why all my templates do not work anymore. Only the SMF classic...the rest come out all white. Also, I can no longer use my image shack mod because there is an error and it cannot write to the post templates.......

all my themes worked fine. the installation was fast, since instead of unzipping and then uploading i just sent the tar.gz directly to the server which could unzip it. I think all CPanel servers can do that, and many others too. Sweet! Thanks a lot guys!

I installed the upgrade and everything went fine. Had it up for a while, added posts, logged in and out without any problems. I shut down my browser when I went to lunch. Came back and I could get to the main page for the forums, but whenever I tried to log in or click on a particular board, I got a generic 500 Internal Server Error message. I re-uploaded the upgrade pieces, ran the upgrade again, and now it seems to be working again. Seen this before? Is there more info I can provide to help?

now its my turn to get it a lot. i've cleared the cache. i use one firefox window (one tab) and im getting it like crazy. about every 3-4 post i do i get that message. this is using the quick response and using the normal reply. i even get it when i try to send a pm to someone..

Well, 500 Internal Server Errors come from Apache. Do you have any way of seeing an error log? (this sort of log would also show 404s, etc.)

Are you using any modifications whatsoever - theme or otherwise? Have you updated your themes? Does this happen with an untouched default theme?

Like I said, things seem to be working ok after going through the upgrade a 2nd time.
On second glance, I don't think these error messages are related to the issue I described. I think this is during the time that I was performing the upgrade and ssi.php wasn't available.
Since upgrading to 1.1 beta 3 I've noticed that I have issue logging in and get randomly logged out when using firefox.
Everything seems fine in IE.
I get the error:
An Error Has Occurred!
You were unable to login. Please check your cookie settings.
However, my cookie settings are fine and have not changed

I thought everything was fine because I was able to get through 6 images, and then going back to the album list I get that error.

I cleared the cache and it didn't seem to fix it. However, when i cleared all cookies it works. Any known reason why the cookies get messed up from 1.0.5 to 1.1 that would make I.E. work fine and not firefox? ???
I am having a problem getting into the Admin area.
If I have recently logged into the forum, I can go right into the admin area, but if I have closed my browser and/or returned to the message board in a new window without logging out previously, I am UNABLE to log into the admin area.
No errors are given and the same "log-in" page is reloaded.
So I have to log-out and back in to the forum in order to get into the admin area.

OK, all upgraded. The smaller update did not work, saying that I had out of date files. It also made the forum stop working completely (blank page). However, I then uploaded the upgrade files, and everything went smoothly.

You could fix this yourself very easily, it's just a matter of adding a <br> in a certain file. :)

Step 3 is useless in my opinion. ??? Make a backup after Step 4 and forget Step 3.

I like the Idea of the Buddy List. But what use is it, if the buddy list itself doesnt exist (or does it)?
it should be a menu entry in the personal messages section. if you click on it, what you get is a list of the members you added to your buddy list. in the style of the Memberlist (rank, IM, adress, posts etc)...
i think that should be implemented before it goes final

everything seems to be ok
when i try to login my username and password smf says frong password
i have 1500 registered users and they all get same frong password
i can change my password but is this only way to solve this problem

1) This is hardly the topic for feature discussion - if you want it changed put it elsewhere
2) The buddy list is supposed to flag to you when your buddies are online primarily. In addition it makes it easier to search from the "find members" popup (Through a checkbox)
3) The buddy list does need some improvements - and also some features we haven't got in yet like automatic labelling would use the buddy list but don't exist as of yet (and won't in 1.1). I'm toying with the idea of adding an option to disable the buddy list altogether so if I get round to it you can disable it on your forum as you please.
one of my users just pointed out something
after upgrading to this version of smf, my "total topics count dropped by about 800, we had over 5000 topics, and now it says we have 4300 topics. however, the total posts count doesn't seem to have dropped at all.
i can't seem to figure out where these topics would have gone.. we haven't done crazy amounts of merging posts..
in my "recyeled" board (where all the deleted posts go) it says theres 925 toics with 3426 posts deleted.. but , its sitll wierd that we would have dropped that many topics, but not have dropped a single post
anyone think of a reason why this happened?

and ya, i just checked the recyling board.. and each thread is considered a topic, regardless if it was actually a topic in the other boards.. although you would already know that..

I'm not sure what to tell you. The only things that would cause that would be:
- if an error ocurrs before the page is done loading.
- modifications to the default theme or source files to improperly force quick reply on.
- possibly other modifications.
- multiple tabs/windows at once posting.

Are you sure you hadn't modified anything before? 1.1 should upgrade 1.0's hashing just fine, unless you changed something.

You clearly have misunderstood either what mods are or the upgrade process! SMF is, like any other software, an application with a certain amount of built in features as standard. Modifications are made by other people to add features which aren't part of the core product (For example a shoutbox, new BBC codes etc). Clearly any modification to SMF relies on CHANGING the software - they work by taking existing code and "patching" it to add the different functions.
Obviously to keep on developing SMF we need to change the code - we add new features to SMF - and that involves changing the code. Because the code has changed many modifications won't work because the old code they look for isn't there. Once SMF 1.1 is released final I expect all mods for 1.0.5 to be converted to work in 1.1 - it's just a case of waiting. Personally I've already converted half the mods I've written for 1.0.5 to work with 1.1 - and shall do the others over time.
It's impossible to expect code modifications from 1.0.5 to work on 1.1 without changes - it's absolutely impossible. Just be patient and wait for 1.1 to go final and you'll find all your modifications you installed in 1.0.5 will almost certainly be made compatible with 1.1.
As for abandoning mods and making them all features - that's just simply ridiculous. If I made a version of SMF with every mod from the mod site installed it would be both:
1) Likely insecure
2) Hugely bloated and slow
The package manager is designed to allow people to add the mods they want easily - and that will continue with 1.1. That said we have added some mods to SMF 1.1 - of particular note message icon management, holiday management and the buddy list.

whenever I try to log in or click on an individual board.
If I'm logged in under another ID, using either Firefox or IE, I get the above message. I've had one user tell me that she was not able to log in until she requested a new password.

If the mods system has to stay, then what you need is a static mods api (limited by definition) that future SMF versions can adhere to so that sites depending on mods are not stuck like this. Backward compatibilty is tricky but expected from quality software.
If this is not addressed I guarantee you will slowly lose users.

For one, looking at other forum software around I think they all lack even SMF's level of functionality - so I don't think we are behind others in this respect. We do actually have a seperate API (Available from the download page) - but it's only really useful for mods which "sit" on SMF - rather than truely integrated into it. I'm sure there are other areas which can be improved but I don't think the system is currently a bad one.
As for mod developers updating mods - obviously there is no guarantee they will - and I personally don't have time to update other peoples modifications - but I'm sure *someone* will update them if they were that useful.
Also - SMF 1.1 does *not* mean we will be dropping support for 1.0.5. You should expect SMF 1.0.5 to be supported for bug/security fixes for at least a year after 1.1 goes final - almost certainly longer until it becomes irrelevant. Also, we do our best to make sure that whenever we make changes to the core way SMF works they don't adversely affect old templates - so only code modifications are likely to be greatly affected - and only those modifications which get right to the core of SMF. For example, I just updated my remaining 1.0.5 mods to SMF 1.1 (Those which aren't now redundant) and most of them took me about 5-10 minutes to do. The only tricky mod was the memberspecific permissions mod because that operates right at the core of SMF.
We're always open to new suggestions of course. The main reason for the modification warning is so people don't expect everything to be updated right away. If you hold off on 1.1 for a few months after it goes gold I expect you'll find all your current stuff works fine - along with the added improvements to 1.0.5 (There have been many)

Can you please check your server error logs for a description of the error. It's a server issue - but we need to know what the error is to be able to tell you what is wrong with it. If you use cPanel they are under "Error logs"

Don't get discouraged about trying new things. Updating it manually may seem hard but it really isn't. Just read some of the easy to find installation/upgrade guides and make a backup and you'll be fine. The hardest part I found was finding the nerve to do it the first time.

Post Count means adding to Users post count once they post in the Board, not tracking the number of posts in said board - that is done by default.
Another bug besides the admin log-in bug I mentioned earlier in this discussion.
This one deals with PM's. I have NO PM's in my PM box (inbox or outbox) and yet it continues to tell me I have ONE new one even though it still tells me I have NO pm's.
SkyWarp, does doing a "Recount" of totals fix that?

Unfortunately, most of the third parties wrote their integrations in ways that did depend on things staying the same. Their assumptions were wrong, but not unexpected. I see absolutely nothing wrong with expecting them to deal with the changes.

Well what is kool now is that Nesianstyles - themes and portal work with Beta. Also, what I did since the image shack is my favorite mod and I could not be without it was install an older version of SMF on my server, then install the image shack mod. Once installed I copied the script from the default posting template in the older version and pasted into the posting template of the Beta version. Viola, worked like a charm.
Nice work on SMF 1.1! All is working perfectly, except when I modify a board it changes the board's permissions back to global. :( The following appears in the error log.

Nope! I even went in and deleted the message from the other person's sent box in the database. And then ran all the maintainance features in SMF. Still doing it. I am quite confused why it still says I have one NEw message when I don't have ANY messages!

I wouldn't think a couple of missing graphics would cause someone not to be able to access the boards at all? I'm going to go through and see if I can find references to those graphics and delete them. I'll also (if I can get logged in) switch it back to the default theme.

I am just wondering which route SMF is going to do down. Would it be wise that I just go ahead and get this 1.1 version or will progression continue from 1.05 onwards. I'd basically like to make sure my mods are working cause the ones I have I like and need but at the same time I don't want to be working with a forum which will have no work done on it again.
1.0x will continue to be maintained for a while, however I imagine mod developers will begin to focus their efforts on 1.1x when it is out of beta.
If 1.0x works for you, there is no reason why you shouldn't contiune to use it.

But [Unknown]'s explanation of mod development and the dangers of bloatware are really good, esp. for demanding newcomers who want every little feature (me included ;D).

First of all, looks great! The only problem I seem to have come up against is that when using the "Resize images when showing under posts:" option, some JPG attachments are no longer being previewed in posts. It successfully resizes some images, but other just won't display. It doesn't seem to matter what size they are or what I have the "Maximum width of thumbnails:" and "Maximum height of thumbnails:" set at.

It did no good. I also had another person send a message and I did the same thing again. Still no good, but at least hte number did NOT go up to two and stay. It went back down once I deleted it after try the above suggestion.
I have another member who is also having this problem on this same forum. I have not noticed it on any of the others yet, but I haven't gotten any messages on them yet. I suppose I could try sending myself messages there too. One is on the same server, the third is on a different server!

I did the following:
DELETE FROM smf_pm_recipients
WHERE ID_MEMBER = ###;
With changes to reflect my number and the prefix of the table as well. No rows were deleted. So I searched the table for any ID Member including my number (1 of course) and there aren't any.
Coincidentally, I think the person that also reported a similar problem is the person that sent me the message that caused this error in the first place.
Well, I can't find any PM's anywhere, so I finally just went into the database and edited my row in the "members" table. I turned the "unread messages" option to 0 instead of 1. I did the same thing to the person that sent me the PM. Let's just hope it doesn't come back!
I also did a quick scan of the other members in the database and it doesn't appear that anyone else (other than the two of us) have more unread messages than they do total messages.
I did the maintainance RECOUNT just for good measure, and everything still seems okay.
Now, is there any word on the Admin log-in problem? :)

Okay, so I had started a new theme from the default. Put in my logo, Google ads, a PayPal sponsor button and some text links. That seemed to fix everything. This morning, tried to log in (using Firefox) and got the same generic error message again this morning. All that was in my error log was:

k.. im getting really annoyed with this now. i clear my cache, and the same day i'll get this error with only one window open, and one tab.. i'd try it with IE, but after using firefox for a long time, i just cant go back to IE. i even get this when i dont use the quick reply. is there any way to completely remove this error message from coming up? (like it doesn't check to see if a post has been "double posted")
and this even happends if i haven't installed any mods and before i've modifided index.template.php to put my ads up

I think you should be fine. The posts are stored in the database, so as long as it's in good shape, you should be fine!
Does anyone else have problems with the censored words list? The Test Censored Words box doesn't seem to do anything. Also, I can't seem to see a list of the words already being censored. I am sure it was easily accessible in 1.0

Ok, I can add words and the test works then. Sorry, I was under the impression that there were already a collection of typical words already censored so I was trying to test the obvious ones with no luck. Looks like its all working fine.

I want to integrat SMF with Community Builder ( for the same avatar and all ) ... is there a module for this ? In translation, some of the modules on SimpleBoard ( like the CB integration ) to have a corespondent module on SMF ... it would be a great help indeed.

When he uses "View the most recent posts on the forum." he can delete all answers to his self opened themes. Within the theme he can't, only in the list of "View the most recent posts on the forum."

Do you see that delete button in topic? Then this is local permissions thing, and user is ollowed moderate his own topics.

I am having my PM problems again. No PM's but it is still telling me that I have NEW pm's. I can go back in and modify my Profile in the database, but that is going to get old real quick! :) For some reason the program is not always (but sometimes) changing the profile PM's counts.

any subcategory, category, forum -> the template only shows text, no background, no css, no nothing.

yes, always. Here is some more detail on the problem.
1. i have it installed as a Mambo component.

i have it in a numeric IP, it's not public for the moment. Could this be the problem, the fact that it doesn't have a domain name yet, or is there another problem.

but the main thing, I think, is that SEF will not work with IP addresses, only names domains. (again, I think)

I upgraded it to SMF 1.1 beta3 Public and I found one small issue.......
In the Labels Management, I cannot delete a Label. When I select a Label to delete and click on the button, I get an error page saying "Sorry, this file does not exist..." which is a PHP Nuke error code. In the browser it shows:

I have looked and experimented, but I cannot seem to get it to work. Is there something I can add to the code to remove that sessions type code?

Admin -> Post and Topics -> Post Settings -> Enable spell checking
As far as I know, this hasn't yet been resolved. I was getting the same error message about favicon.ico. I even went and created a favicon.ico. I no longer get that written to my error log, but it hasn't fixed the SMF issue either. I've posted some tips for users to work around the issue. Usually hitting 'back' and then refreshing the main index page clears up the issue.

Yay! The whole Apache/500 problem is fixed, thanks to SMF's own [Unknown].
Turn out that while I was searching for every possible combination of things like login, 500 error, and other descriptors; the actual problem is explained here:

Well, that didn't work. :) However I'm still not sure exactly where I am to be looking for Select the restrictions for this board. These restrictions do not apply to moderators and administrators. It's certainly not on the modify board page (where you change descriptions and such).

This was fixed, but it has only a very limited effect; they must be the topic starter and the topic must be on the recent posts list. The next release will fix this - but there is a reason we ask you not to use beta versions in production if you're not sure you're comfortable with it.

You don't want to, it's for security. But, that's not causing it or you wouldn't be able to log out. It must be the post data - save, delete, or something...

I'm running PHP v 4.2.2 and have all of the updated files except for InstantMessage.php, which shows as 1.0.2 and ?? ... I'm guessing it got removed in favor of PersonalMessage.php? Some of my templates are out of date, but none of the core files.
I am also having the PM issue, as well as the admin login problem. Right now I show "0 messages, 1 is new". On the login issue, logging out and back in solves it temporarily.
I've got the same problem with messages, it's showing I have one new when i've actually read it. I'm also getting 8 or 9 pages of errors every time I go into my personal messages.
Also, sometimes when I try to log in, I get an error saying I am forbidden to access the index page. I then click back and try again, and it lets me in fine.
the problem spottedhog and I are having seems to be due to nuke believing that the url modules.php?name=Forums&action=pm;sa=manlabels;sesc=d33c5c069d4e268534205b2661b438a5
is a seperate module as that of Forums, can't figure out what might trigger that though. Any ideas?

I have 1108 pages of error logs; almost all of them were generated by lines 430 and 432 in PersonalMessage.template.php.
What version of PHP is this? It sounds like you didn't update a lot of your files. Go to Admin and click (more detailed) next to the version number.

I use PHP 4.1.2. All files under "Your Files" show as 1.1 beta 3 public except Instant Message, which shows as 1.0.2. All the versions under default theme show 1.1b3 for my files, and "??" for current files.

On the second one, it only started as soon as I installed the new version, it never did it before. Again, I'll try it and see if it sorts it. :)
*Edit* just got the error again when I tried to log in, this is exactly what it says:

The query got rid of the new message, but i'm still getting a lot of errors when I visit the message section, like this one for example:

*Final edit* :D After changing the htaccess file, I managed to log in and out without problems, as did another member. I'll see how it goes, but it may have sorted the login problem, thanks :)

Do you see that delete button in topic? Then this is local permissions thing, and user is ollowed moderate his own topics.
Do have a small problem now after the upgrade-- I can not use the package manager, saids that the packages dir is not writable -- using IIS on 2003 server and i know it is??keep wanting me to go do the ftp thing and i don't use that?

The "NEW PM" problem occasionally keeps popping up. I can't seem to figure out why some times it still happens, when other times I delete a PM and it doesn't happen. I haven't had a new PM sent to me in a while, so I haven't had any problems recently.
I also have several pages of errors all showing Undefined Indexes with files dealing with PM's.
I have gone back and CHMOD all files again, just in case that might be part of the problem. I will see if any more errors come up!
My other forums don't have this problem though and yet I did nothing different to them.

It will more than likely be a while. There will probably be more beta builds released before any final builds are. Don't let the fact that it's still in beta stop you from upgrading. You can always backup :).

I just installed 2 copies of 1.1 Beta 3 and neither show spell check in the admin area under Features and Options. Now, it is highly possible I'm missing where it is now, or did it get removed for some reason? I searched prior mentions of spell check, but I didn't find any hits for this thread nor anything related to the most recent beta versions. My server does have pspell compiled on it, and 1.0.5 does show and work with spell check option, I just simply cannot seen to find it in 1.1 Beta 3 Public at all...
Spell Check has been moved in the admin panel to: Forum -> Posts and Topics -> Enable spell checking
I had assumed my previous package manager problems was because safemode was on, and that 1.1 would solve it. Then I had problems with the package manager in 1.1 and still thought it was a safemode problem, but now I am thinking it is a different problem since the error message doesn't say anything about safemode. As I mentioned above, the error is:

Ok ... finally getting around to trying this fix, and it seems to have worked. Can you tell me if this is just a temp fix until the next release or should it fix the issue for good?
IIRC the next release should fix this - it also does the above in "Find and Fix any Errors" - so you'd never have to manually do it :D

Please try deleting all the directories, .tar.gz files, and .zip files in the Packages directory.

Deleted those (leaving me with only index.php, installed.list and server.list). Tried to install a mod and it still gave the error. It also created a new Temp folder and put the zip file for the mod (gmail mod) into the packages folder. So, that didn't work.

strange, but there is no error mesage both in forum logs and error log from site.
the problem is that the file .zip is downloaded in the Packages directory, it's there, why Package Manager said that he can't write there?
and of course didn't find any other mod manualy dwld there, so I can not instal any mod with package manager . . . :)
I have the same problem-- running 2003 Server and IIS6 -- however I can download a file then go to the Upload a package and browse for the package and install - But from the Package servers it will say the Packages is not writable

I waited and have read 22 pages of some scaring issues.
We have 400 members and 1000's post a month they would freak if I screwed this up.

I'm not sure what to tell you. That error should *never* happen. I'm afraid to ask, but... would it be possible to give me temporary access, just to the SMF install, and an admin account - so I can try to reproduce it?

Five days ago I did a clean install of 1.1 Beta 3 and I had received the same Package Manager error as above. I did exactly everything that Unknown had suggested (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=40867.0), and I am able to download mods now, but I'm having issues installing them. When I go to Apply the mod, the page just hangs. It never leaves that page.
Then last night I tried it again and it let me install two of them - and then quit again. I had like a window of one minute. I haven't been able to install any since.
Other than the package manager are there many other bugs?
I have been using it for a few weeks now and I haven't noticed anything besides that

Looks like your themefiles are outdated.
have installed a fresh copy
while uploading the files got an error for the .htaccess file under packages the error siad prohibited file name will this cause any problems ?

The install wen OK, but there are few issues.
1. There is one issue however (and apologies if this has been mentioned before), that affects me under Safari and Firefox (v 1.0.6) on a Mac (haven't tried other browsers yet, but I'll let you know). In the admin panel: Registration : Settings
I've set an "Age below which to apply registration restrictions" and then I've saved and then chosen "Require parent...". However, the following boxes "Postal address..." etc, remain unavailable. I.E. I still can't input any text.
2. I am getting sporadic 406 errors when viewing teh forum. Usually, when first navigating to the site and then when clicking the registration button.
"406 Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /index.php could not be found on this server".
Obviously the second one is especially serious. Any ideas?

Ben. We've cross-posted. See my link above, I already tried that solution. Also, this has only started happening the second that I updated to the 1.1 beta. 1.0.5 has been running on that server for months.

I also have a problem with Calendar, if that's something that might be of interest. When I go to Calendar in the Admin Panel I get a completely blank white page.
Just upgrade to Beta3, easy, nice looking, smooth and fully costumize, perfect navigation for admin :)
But, mostly my forum visitor feel that this version slowly than previous 1.0.3. Especially visitor who have slow internet connection.

No, I am using FTP to upload all upgrade files. And then do the upgrade.php.
Simple, easy, and its working. Upgrading this Beta is simple. And i love the new Navigation way 8)
Maybe the problem on my host server. I will check again.
The speed still slow from previous.
I will try clean install tomorrow (not upgrading).

One question how many groups can the board handle? Later on Im gonna want to let users create/run their own groups so that they can trade between group members.

If I create a topic in a child forum using Firefox then I open IE the On image doest show on the main page but only on the sub forum listing page.
If I post in the parent forum then the On image shows fine on the front page. Im not sure if its suppose to be like that or did I screw somethign up?

So, that's the way how a theme based on Classic YabbSE works. If you use the default theme, you have a on2.gif, which shows if there are new posts in a subboard. Classic YabbSE theme doesn't have this. You could remove or rename the BoardIndex.template.php of your current theme and copy on2.gif yo the images directory of your new theme.

about the membergroups. the limitation in the database is 65,536. You could mod the database to get around this though
Still, it's not really designed for such large numbers of groups - I would suggest keeping it below 100.

More then 65,536 membergroups? Wow I'd be happy just to be able to have that many members LOL... that would almost guarantee a group for each member about and then some in most cases... im not sure why anybody would need more?

I just want to say that I upgraded from YaBB SE 1.5.5 to SMF 1.1 Beta 3 Public three days ago and my community loves all the new features! ;D
Of course, this wasn't a smooth conversion but given that this is a beta, I wasn't expecting it to be smooth either. :P
I had already installed a separate SMF forum from scratch (1.1 Beta 3), so when database errors came up with "missing table", I would just copy the table from the other version of SMF I had.
I didn't write down all the error messages, but it would add the word "Array" into the CREATE line, when trying to convert some YabbSE 1.5.5 tables. It did this with "_banned" and a couple others. Also, it was expecting a "pm_recipients" table (which doesn't exist in YaBB SE), so I duplicated the "instant_messages" table and just altered the columns accordingly. I then later had to update the data for "deleted" from -1 to 0 and "is_read" from "-1" to "1".
Anyway, the forum is now working great, and I've already modded a bunch of files successfully using a custom Package in the Package Manager. Great work guys! :)
It sounds like you didn't exactly upgrade the standard way, Yonkey... what steps did you take?

Ok, well I wanted to minimize the downtime of my forum, so here were the steps:
- Using CPanel, I duplicated my YaBB SE 1.5.5 "forum" dir and called it "forum2"
- I then downloaded the SMF 1.1 Beta 3 upgrade and ftp'd all files into this "forum2" directory
- I then copied the theme I was using on my other SMF 1.1 Beta 3 forum into the Themes directory
- Then I put my YaBB SE 1.5.5. into Maintenance Mode, and copied the Settings.php and Settings_bak.php to the "forum2" directory
- I then renamed "forum" to "oldforum"
- I then renamed "forum2" to "forum"
- finally, I ran upgrade.php
I know, I should have removed all my mods before running upgrade.php but I forgot about that. That alone didn't cause many problems.. it was just the Post Groups and Member Group Colours mods that caused one of the database errors, and as a result I had to redo all membergroups after upgrading (including the standard ones like Administrator, Global Moderator, Moderator, Guest and Regular Member).
During the upgrade, I would just solve the problems either by: copying a table from my existing SMF 1.1 Beta 3 forum into this one, altering column names to the expected values, or I'd just rename the YaBB SE 1.5.5 table so that it would "skip" over it. :P
I should point out that the tables I skipped over due to "Array" errors weren't really crucial.. it was like "banned" and some some "log_" tables.
Well this is getting weird, I've recently upgraded to this beta version from 1.0.5 but now whenever me or any of the members are replying or starting new topics they can't use any of the smilies or text modifying buttons/icons. It's really fustrating! I've even deleted all the packages I used (since I thought they might be causing the problem), but still no change! :/ Is there any way of downgrading back to 1.0.5? or am I doomed? :(

yeh just reinstall the backup of your smf 1.0.5 ... otherwise i think you gotta start back ...
What do you mean by backup? just the mysql backup or the whole version? like overwrite the beta version? :-\
the mysql backup and restore the 1.0.5 files too..
So I need to install 1.0.5 over the beta version and then restore the old backup (when the forum was 1.0.5)? Just want to be sure 8)
before you upgraded to the beta you are ment to take a full back-up incase things like that happens.

This looks like a Javascript error occuring somewhere on your page. Do you have any modifications to the original templates? Do you have a link to your forum?
(or even better, start a new topic in the support boards to get a sollution to your problem)

Backup your databas eand you shoul dbe safe.
Get a upgrade SMF version and follow the install instructions.
Mmmm im tempted to wait for a final.. because my 1.0.5 install is running really fast atm.. and ive got everything setup just so.
1.1 b3 is a BETA ... if you have mods that you can't live without or aren't up for helping to test bugs, stick with 1.0.5.
Another option is to create a copy of your working forum, upgrade that one, and see what happens on it. If things come out ok you can feel secure in upgrading your working model, and if they don't, well, you haven't lost anything.

I'm wondering what are the plans for those who have beta to upgrade to final- similar to those upgrading from the current stable to the beta [i.e. not pkg manager]? I ask because I want to get a basic idea of time needed to convert to the final whenever it's released- even though it might be a while off. I run a site on my own time [as do a lot of ppl I'm sure] but I always try to keep downtime and funkay-ness due to upgrades as minimal as possible since it's a solo job come upgrade time.
Granted I realize that the dev team may not know, but I'm just asking for ballpark of 'most likely it'll be $action, but don't hold us to that.

chelle, it took me about 5 minutes to upgrade - and most of that time was just me taking my time and being scared. it was easy breezy and quick.
I'm still getting lots of errors when visiting the pm section, but I just noticed this one too, which I get visiting my Board News section

Thanks Dan...though I wasn't asking whent he final would be available..I was asking on the upgrade methodology for those that are taking the betas for a test drive. I imagine if it's similar to who those running 1.0.X upgrading to beta...then I've got little to worry about.

Found a bug? At least on my website. When I log into the forum and go make a post right away I get "The last posting from your IP was less than 30 seconds ago. Please try again later." then I have to wait 30 seconds and Im allowed to make a post or reply.
That is because you have a 30-second limit set. You can change it in Posts and Topics.

Understandable why people keep asking. Site admins often have to make decisions on which direction to take their site software. Since SMF doesn't have a CVS that people can monitor, it makes the guess-work more challenging.
Maybe a solution would be to keep a running task-list of items that need to be taken care of before the next release? Then the answer would be "when all of the to-do items are done", which allows us to at least conjure up our own estimations.

I had an interesting situation with upgrading to 1.1 beta 3.
I use Mambo and upgraded without any trouble at all. It took me about 1/2 hour to do everything, including the pre-upgrade backup process.
Here's my problem... Upon investigating the nice new admin panel, I noticed that 1 user was still pending authorization, even though I use immediate registration. This user is a known user on my site, and he has deleted his account two or three times in the past for "conspiracy" reasons. When I saw this inactive account I clicked on it and it said this user was awaiting activation. There was no information present, and a day or two ago this user had changed his name from what I was seeing here to something else (I allow users to change their displayed name). So I naturally figured this was a duplicate account that never got authorized and he signed up for another one. It was pending from May of this year.
Ok... Problem is, after I clicked to delete this account, his normal account is gone and it changed all of his recent posts that had the new username back to the old username that I just deleted and listed him as a "guest" ... So, why did it delete his current account and why was it showing up as pending activation since May? Weird.
It may have been that he changed his email, which would make him pending activation.

Can't you 'automate' the install - even for the beta? I'm dying to use 1.1(beta) which must be reasonably stable but the thought of installing by hand fills me with trepidation ... especially as I don't know if it is days, weeks or months before it is not a beta.

If you have hosting from someplace you can't edit the php.ini file yourself. You probably don't need anything changed in it either. If there is something your host restricts that you need, I am afraid you are going to have to ask your host to enable it.

The installation process is already very simple. Chances are, anybody that has had significant trouble didn't follow the instructions properly. This installation took less than 1/2 hour and was seriously a piece of cake. I have a heavily modified and integrated website, and I found that there were only minor changes in the themes. I used a program called WinMerge to compare my custom themes with the new themese and copied information accordingly to make mine 1.1 beta 3 compliant.
When I click on the members waiting for approval link (when there's a new member) I don't get to the activation page for that member. I instead get redirected to the blank "Register New Member" page in the admin area. I searched a few days ago and found someone with a similar problem - so updated all my files/language files as it suggested to do and it's still not working. Minor though this is, any help is appreciated.

Are you using a custom or old theme? Are you sure it doesn't work with the default theme?

We're using the Cerberus theme - for 1.1B3 - so that's probably it. I just tested and it works perfectly with the default theme. Is there a fix?

Hmm I was thinking that this would make a good anti bot feature on sites with no registaration activation. A bot registers and then tries to make a post but it cant as 30,40,etc seconds hasn't passed yet. Or if they manage to register manually when the bot logs in it cant post a message. Im sure the bot can be set up for a delay but thsi would fool a lot of bots.

Well all of it. I have smf 1.0 beta 5. And i'm trying to upgrade. I even had a friend of mine try to help me. And we kept getting all kinds of undefined errors. After about 2 hours we finally gave up. If you could give me any advice of what we could be doing wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

well once we did the install, it was loading a page that said just a bit more info or something like that and i had to fill out server info etc. and it didn't like any of the info i inputed, like the mysql server and things like that.
i don't remember know. i'll ask the girl who was helping me in the morning to see if she remembers what all we were getting. I think its just a matter of "ditzy blonde moment". yes i said that. haha. too bad i'm not blonde. lol
For now, please upgrade to 1.0 first and then 1.1. I'm afraid the 1.1 upgrade.php was not working properly with 1.0 beta versions.

Maybe I'm dense or something, but I went to the download link that's in the very first posting, and I've gone through every page and don't understand one thing -
I've got 1.0.5 up and running, with just two or three mods (Helios_multi theme, Skype, and Visual Warning - which has never worked anyway), and want to upgrade to 1.1 beta 3, but don't want to lose all I've got on my forums. I have two forums running this way, and one new forum that I just used a full load at 1.1 Beta 3, it's working fine.
Now, where my brain falls out is - which of those download files for 1.1 Beta 3 do I use to upgrade from 1.0.5? And what, if anything, will not work when I do this upgrade??? Any advice from you sage SMF'ers???

First thing to do before you upgrade your forum is to BACKUP ! Backup your database (which contains all the most important stuff - members, posts, permissions, boards, etc.) and your forum files, so if anything goes wrong you will be able to go back and won't lose your forum.
But as far as I know, if you are currently running 1.0.5 with mods, you will have to use the "upgrade" script from the download's page. This means that you will lose your installed mods. You will have to reinstall then after the upgrade is done.
None of the mods I used pre 1.1 beta 3 work anymore, so if you like your mods wait for updated mods to be released...
Hello, I know there is no support for the Beta but it is normal that if I check my Messages than I got in 1 Second 5 Error Pages in the Error Log ?
This is only the first page of the logs, the Error are flooding my Logs, would be nice to disable this.
And please be patient with me, the Search function in the Board is oftne giving me this Error in the last days " Due to high stress on the server, the search function is temporarily disabled. Please try again in a short while."

Backups - that goes without saying. I've done a complete backup of not just the board, but all mySQL databases just to have a good, clean, full backup. But you mention the upgrade script - that's what I'm saying is so confusing. There's like three or four upgrade scripts and I couldn't figure out which one was for which...

I'd think that Beta 4 will be released to charter members within the next few days. It's obviously stable as I've seen Beta 4 installed on three forums now.

I'd think that Beta 4 will be released to charter members within the next few days. It's obviously stable as I've seen Beta 4 installed on three forums now.
I guess I really need to become a charter member, as I'm on these forums almost every day since switching to SMF. Hmmmm... have to go look that up...

Well, if my business life would slow down a bit, I'd love to spend some time doing some dev work on upgrades, options and themes, because I used to do a lot of that with phpBB before "leaving the dark side of the force". I just flat out don't have the time to do this now, but wish I did as I find it thoroughly enjoyable. I'm going to go search "charter member" and see what that requires...

I wish it was as easy as getting out of school, but at 43 there ain't much schoolin going on, it's mainly 16 hour work days bustin my hump... looks like charter membership does have it's priveleges...haha ;D

I'm the opposite, for about the last nine months I've averaged 16 hours a day. Last year I worked 5250 hours total, which is almost three man-years of labor!!! Too much to do....
Well of course it could be hard and work can sux - just depends on the work, well but i meant it more from a standpoint of doing the kind of work you really enjoy.

This is confusing, but I'll try to summarize.
1.0.5 is the current stable release.
1.1 Beta 3 is a more recent release, but it's still being tested and should probably not be used on live servers (but I'm using it without trouble, however I modified my own themes to make it work).
I downloaded and installed the UPGRADE version of 1.1 Beta 3, and I already had 1.0.5 installed and running (which was updated via the package manager).
Please - I emphasize it again, make a backup of your web folder and your database.

I've got two live boards running 1.0.5 and one on 1.1 beta 3, about to go live with a fourth board and it'll be on beta 3 unless 4 comes out first. The only problem I've had is the background colors for the Package Manager in the AP being solid white along with the script being almost white, so very hard to see. Also did some personal mods on some themes to make them work a little better, but other than that I've not seen any issues with it that haven't already been cured. Good luck to you whichever version you pick.

Cool, I was running Helios_Multi and loaded it into 1.1 before the developer of H_M came out with a version suitable for 1.1, so my mods were actually a waste of time. I was just too excited to wait and forged ahead with the version for 1.0.5, which if you're going to a theme that's not already verified as functional at 1.1 beta 3, I'd suggest holding off and contacting the developer of it to insure it's going to work. It took me about five nights of pounding on the keyboard to get mine working and a week later the developer dropped the actual working version here. I should have waited... no patience...

AFAIK, some new features were added from Beta 3 -> Beta 4, I'm not sure it anymore features are coming after the betas though.
Beta's are open for new features (only a few), RC's has a feature stop, only bug-fixing.

I didn't have any trouble with the smilies or images. It only required some tweaking of the themes. Most people probably only use 2 or 3 custom theme files so it shouldn't take very long to update.

New Problem after the update. My users get this error when they try to smite or applaud. Even when they login and logout this still shows up.

I did exactly what you did with my Zone Alarm Pro but it didn't work. Gah. It only happens with the Karma. And only started after the upgrade to beta.
It's because your template is out of date. There is now a session check with karma so the templates have been updated. If you search for karma and session I'll expect you'll find more details.

What did not work about smf_1-0-5_update.zip? Both update and upgrade contain upgrade.php.
You do not, as I said, need to upload any of the files (for 1.0.5) except upgrade.php. This is because you want to upload the 1.1 Beta 3 Public files anyway. However, The upgrader may give you an error (about out of date files) in which case you will need to upload all of the other files.

Security and major bugfixes went into 1.0.5, as with every minor release. You can see the release announcements in this board for more detail.
I strongly suggest you update to at least 1.0.5 (1.1 Beta 3 Public is newer but less stable.)

That's not a bug...what error are you getting?
It doesn't give me an error, although twice it said there was. The site cannot be accessed.
Most of the time it says sometimes like "database down due to server or capacity problems" Then sometimes I can just refresh and it'll say somthing is wrong with the theme and that i can select the default.
I think it's theme issues. Even though the theme works sometimes. I have 5 sites running on 5 different domains/DBs and a fresh install of 1.1b3. Three of them keep messing up and I have to reinstall. It only does it when I change the theme to something other than default. Alotta times it'll be working and I won't even touch it. get up teh next day and visit the site and it'll be down.
Even on creating a theme through the site, or another that works with 1.1b3.
I'll try to get the proper information for you. However it never gives me and error message directing to a file and line of code..
I have also contacted my webhost to see if there are problems on thier end.

Yeah, I'm curious when the finalized version will be up, also. I've just gotten all the bugs worked out for my forum with the old 1.0.5 version, and I'd prefer to wait until this gets the final kinks out before I have to deal with a new can of worms...

I really doubt there will EVER be a "final" version, as that implies that there will be no more releases. The nature of an open-source project is that there is always someone working on it to improve or add something.
Also, the team is constantly telling people not to ask when a release might be out. It'll be out when it's out. Don't bug them. Remember that these people are doing this in their spare time - they aren't getting paid to listen to people whine at them ... at least tech support people in an office get some compensation for their trouble. Give these guys a break and quit hounding them about the next release or the next feature or the next whatever. Take it as it comes and be happy that they are producing the best forum software on the market ... FOR FREE.

For others, you are not going to get any release dates because no-one knows them. This has been said thousand times, it will be released when its ready. When it will be like that, we just dont know that. Try to live with that, please. :-X

I had a similar issue and it turned out it was template related ... i.e. I could see the attachments as they were supposed to be ONLY when I was using the default template. Since that was the only trouble I had, I haven't ditched my template, but I'm eagerly awaiting the official 1.1 version of it :)
So ... if you have been using a template, try viewing your forum with the default template ... check out your attachments. If they look normal, then it's probably the theme you were using.
Yeahhh thats true. I use 7Dana but they release a compatible version so everything looks perfect now.
The only problem is with the Albanian language. Man the translation are pain in the a**
So i have to take the new english language and start all over agin. Buhhhhh I'm never gona fisnish :(

How about installing the board notes mod. Then state at the top of this thread "1.1 will be out when it's ready. No Release date availiable at this time"
That might stop maybe half of the repeated questions.

Ok, I finally got around to putting the test site back together. I get two e-mails from my webhost saying I got a DB error. When I check my error log on the site, all I get is this:

How does one forum error, cause 2 DB errors? I'm a dummy with this kinda stuff, so forgive me if I don't make sense. I gave you all the info I could get on the error.
Maybe I should take a look into the package that was installed.

That error is caused by a bug in a mod.
The email you are getting is because your database server is either going down, or you are getting too many visitors for your server. You'll have to contact your host. It has nothing to do with that error, and it is not preventable. When you get the email, a user sees an error message, saying a connection to the database could not be made.

Hello if u use downl;oad accelerator, disable browser integration & exit from it before installing any packages .
If u keep it one...it downloads u r package...

Anyways, I was just looking at my website 5 minutes ago didn't touch a thing. Now I refresh and I get this:

All my other websites work fine. Including a my other freshly installed 1.1b.
EDIT: I just noticed that if I click the link from my previous post, the site comes up. However, when I visit the index, I get the STU problem.
EDIT: I was able to look at my error log, there are no other errors showing. BTW, I get 192 GB data transfer a month, the most I've ever used is 10GB in a month. So far this month(past 10 days) I've only used 147.840 MB.

Webhost says it's an error in the script. I'll try to find out in more detail.

Doesn't come from SMF, it comes from your webserver. Sounds like a 503. Might be mod_security. Having problems with mod_security? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=34270.0)

I don't have mod_secruity and they say it's DB errors that are coming up. However these errors are not showing up in my forum log. They say it was a Invalid query name. I'm trying to figure out how I can find the details so I can pass it along.
there's a typo in a comment in Profile.php: "noficiation" in notification() ;)

Yea, I'm trying to get that information now. I'm starting to feel like they are trying to blow me off. Thier policy is to respond within 24 hours. It took them 3 days for the last response. They've had serious power outage in the LA area, but from what they said, it's been fixed.
Maybe they are just swamped with complaints. However, as soon as I get the information I'll pass it along. I've already asked once though, and they didn't answer the question. So I gotta try again.

That was a week ago now. Definitely serious, though. I remember I was working away, and bam... everything was off. Didn't come back for an hour... worse in some places, better in others. Wasn't so bad, though.

i have problems with posting answers sometimes ( it give me an error page) on 2 different forums , 2 different sql database same bug..
I have to reload the page to be able to post an answer from the quick reply window... too often..

I've also had this problem with SMF 1.0.5. SMF 1.1 has a completely different quick reply method; it fixed it for me.
so i'll disable the quick reply feature and hope that they will release the rc1 soon... ::)

I don't even know if i will have the time to wait for the next release, because the members of my 2 forums are starting to complain and I have to do something about this , I know that you guys want to make money, but I'm not sure that it is the right way to do it... ; you let us deal with the bug untill we get tired of it and sign up for charter member without knowing if it will fix all the problems...
maybe i will try to reinstall 1.0.5 and use a back up ( and loosing many posts and memberships) or simply change the software for a more stable one... Eventually I have to do something about it and soon.

I know that I should upgrade to the latest version, but I'm just interested. Is it just me that can't get the ban feature in SMF 1.1 Beta 3 Public to work.
I've tried banning some test users that I set up using all the different methods and they can quite happily keep logging in and posting.
