Title: update smf2 rc3 to rc4
Post by: alsaka on November 02, 2010, 08:23:59 AM
how can update to rc4 without lost any member or topic or mod

No easy way to do that. The RC updates usually end up in you losing your installed mods.

The good news is, that upgrading does not affect members or topics, so all real content should stay intact :)

I updated my test forum from 2.0 RC3 to 2.0 RC4 and all my mods were listed in the downloads. I simply reinstalled my mods (the ones that have been ported that is).

However, since this is just a test forum, I didn't really have any data in the data base. When I reinstall my mods, are they creating new database tables or are they checking for existing ones first?

In other words, lets say I have the Ad Management mod installed and have four Adsense codes configured to show on different pages and in different areas. I update to 2.0 RC4 and the mod is overwritten by the upgrade. I then look in my packages downloads section and see that Ad Management mod is ready to be installed. When I install the Ad Management mod, will I have to configure the mod again, or will it already be configured because it is using the same tables that the previous one was?

@king kratos - You should not have to reconfigure as it will use the same tables.

@alsaka - Were you able to complete the upgrade?

Update steps in detail please clarify me
Can I do to download the file to the packages and install now
Do you come to me link to download the file I do not know which one

The link that LexArma posted in Reply#1 contains the upgrade instructions.  2.0 is a release candidate so there is no update package that can be applied with the package manager.  Instead you will need to unpack the zip and FTP the files to your host, overwriting the files already there.  Yep, that means you will have to reinstall all the mods you are using.

This should be the correct file for your upgrade: http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_2-0-rc4_update.zip

Usually you can select the Try English option safely, and it will continue with the upgrade :)

i try this
Note: If necessary the above security check can be bypassed for users who may administrate a server but not have admin rights on the forum. In order to bypass the above check simply open "upgrade.php" in a text editor and replace "$disable_security = 0;" with "$disable_security = 1;" and refresh this page.

i change from ,disable_security = 0  to disable_security = 1
and
Admin Login: (DISABLED )

i try English and show this msg again

Make sure you uploaded all the language files correctly, and don't forget to upload updated language files to whatever language is your default if not english, and then try again - or simply select skip - and upload needed language files later on.

That doesn't seem like an error, does the button say continue? If it does, just click it. :)

If that doesn't work, upload all RC4 arabic language files to the server too. Just like english files were updated, the arabic files should be updated as well.

I go this same thing on an upgrade from RC3 to RC4 on a test forum. The skip button and Try English buttons never worked. The only way I could get passed this screen was to upload ALL the language files form a FULL install package. I tried this multiple times. Once on a fresh RC3 install with no mods and using the FTP method. Once on a fresh RC3 install with no mods and using the webinstall method. I get the same thing every time. Once I upload all of the language files, it is fixed and works just fine.

I'm thinking that the issue is due to the fact that the upgrade packages probably aren't changing all of the language files and therefore some are left with the RC3 version attached to them.

alsaka, king kratos,

You're right, I believe there was an issue with the language files - they were mostly not regenerated properly for RC4, initially. Including for English-UTF8 (which unfortunately is not "native" to SMF 2.0 - though we're considering to make it so in future versions), for which reason it wasn't accepting the fallback to English either.
Currently the language packs have been regenerated again and I tested many of them, including English UTF8 and Arabic: they should work now.
Please, let us know how it goes.

Sweet! I will test this out on a few fresh RC3 installs and let you know what happens.

As you wish. You could go back to RC3 on the main forum, and make another directory to test the upgrade to RC4. We would install there a new forum and see about upgrading it. It may be the slowest route, though.

I suspect it might happen that not all files were uploaded...? Perhaps you could download for testing index.english-utf.php and index.arabic-utf8.php and attach them here?

Hello, docmac,

Please tell, what language packs do you use on your forum? UTF 8 or not?

Also please upload the files as they are now on the Downloads > Languages site.

I had this issue when I upgraded my test forum as well.  I had uploaded all the language files, but my FTP client was set to only overwrite if the date was newer.  Once I selected to overwrite all, everything worked like a charm.

you need to use FTP to transfer that file and any update files for the database to your server then run upgrde.php How do I use FTP? / What is FTP? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=480.0)

you will NOT loose any members or posts using this method

Download the small upgrade package, extract the files that begin with 'upgrade', then FTP them to your site and run the upgrade.php from your browser.  If you get an error, post it here.

The error really says that it's finding outdated language files... And your forum may not have everything right as long as it's using outdated language files.
Can you please attach here all your files in Themes/default/ named "index.[language].php"?

If you have any more mods than one, I'd suggest going for the biggest one. Will save you from some of the hassle trying to get the mods to work again. ( Meaning, it will uninstall them all, and you can try reinstalling them from scratch again ;) )
