Title: Update 1.1.12 Packages question
Post by: BrewserBrad on November 09, 2010, 08:36:50 PM
I updated my site from 1.1.11 to 1.1.12 and for some reason all of my packages show to install even though they are all installed. Is there a way to fix this so I know what is really installed?
There is a bit more to this and I was confused on how to install the update. I downloaded the update and it stated to copy all the files over. Well, when I do that it overwrote my files and then I did the update. The problem is that when I did that my whole theme was messed up and all of my packages were not installed so I copied all of my backup files back to restore everything the way it was before now all my packages show not installed. I then went into the admin panel and did the update through there and that took all of about 10 seconds. It now shows I'm on the latest release but still none of the packages show installed.
I wish the instructions were better because I could tell that I couldn't copy over everything in the upgrade zip file because it would overwrite my theme and such.
Any help would be great.

Package manager updates and upgrades using the large or small upgrade package are two completely different processes.  There are probably thousands of topics on sm.org concerning this.

If you were on 1.1.11 you could have updated with the package manager where you install the update just like a mod.  Of course you used the large upgrade with which you overwrite all your files.

If you restored a complete files backup, including the installed.list file inside the /Packages directory, then you should be back to where you were before the upgrade.  If that file is still empty, you might examine your backup and try to restore the old file.

Without that, you may want to start with fresh files and reinstall your mods.

Thanks for your Help!
The installed.list fixed it!
I did try the small update. Download the file from SMF and see what it contains. Read the readme file and see where it says to copy everything over to your server. This does not make sense. I later found out how easy it was to update by going into the package manager.
I sure hope they make it easy to upgrade to 2.0 when it hits production.
Thanks again

Hi BrewserBrad.

The differences in the different packages are roughly as follows

1) Package manager update / patch - Available through the admin panel directly, or by download from http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/

Will work through the package manager, most of the times, usually regardless of mods.

2) Small update package, available only from the download page of SMF, at http://download.simplemachines.org

Will not work through the package manager, and is mostly aimed at forums with no mods, wishing for a simple update without package manager. Will have to be extracted, and the files used to owerwrite existing ones. Will not remove mods, and may leave them broken, so you might need to manually install parts of them again.

3) Large upgrade package, available only from the download page of SMF, at http://download.simplemachines.org

Will not work through the package manager, and is mostly aimed at forum with multiple mods, or broken files, or situations where you want to clean all your files. Will have to be extracted, and the files used to overwrite existing ones. Will completely remove all mods, and leave you with a completely fresh set of files, updated and working, with only the possible installation files on your server still, so you can reinstall mods if you wish.

Great explanation LexArma.  We may want to move that or something like that to a topic on it's own and sticky it.

@ BrewserBrad - upgrading to 2.0 will take a large upgrade.  There are way too many differences to do it any other way.  That means overwriting all your forum files and upgrading your database which contains all the important stuff,  Don't forget to mark the topic solved if you don't have any further issues.
