Title: How to change server password
Post by: yankeestonk on January 18, 2011, 09:58:29 AM
I forgot the password at GoDaddy.com to access the database for my forum. Have to reset it. I know I have to have G.D. reset it, what do I have to do after they reset? I'm assuming the forum will go down as soon as it's reset until I put the new password in?

you would change the password in the Settings.php file in your forums root directory

you can also use repair_settings.php

What is repair_settings.php? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=663.0)

Thanks guys. So the only thing I change is the password right? Everything else I don't touch. Just type in new password and confirm and it should connect?

if your database password gets changed whenever godaddy changes your master password, then yes

Is their a master password and a database password? I have two databases for my site, one for the main site, one for the forum, and another I have no idea what it is. (they moved the forum once to a new database server, as it was extremely slow. Now I have two databases for the forum, not sure which one is active, or both, it's all messed up. To top it off I don't know the password to the "2nd" fourm database. I can access the first one. I think I have to call GoDaddy and hope I hit that 1 in 5 chance of getting a tech on the phone who knows what he's doing.

On a good host (not godaddy) the password to access cpanel is never the same as the password for databases (and anyone that does do this is a bad admin).  cpanel allows you to create new users with their own passwords for database access.  i would check if go daddy offers something of the like.

Thanks much,
Slamdime.... I've heard bad things about Go.Daddy.com. However I've never used anyone else so I don't know if I'd have more of fewer problems if I switched. I orignally had to forum (which is now a sub domain of the main site) with another server. OLI , but it kept going down so I moved it over to be a sub-domain of the main site. Not sure if that was a good or bad thing to do SEO wise...

But anyway, in the event I need to swtich to a new host, who is "good" in your opinion?

Thanks for the help!
Ken
