Just curious is there any feature or mod that allows me to have a main page with a posts from the forum featured on it, similar to how blogs work?

examples: AfterworldForums (dot) com or Planet Calypso Forums (dot) com

Right now i'm just using the free install from godaddy. Would I have to upgrade to a licensed version for a feature like that?

Install any of the portal mods, such as SimplePortal and you can do that.

There is no "licensed" ($$) version of SMF. There are some 3rd party mods and themes which require payment, if you choose to install and use them. I think that anything found on this SMF site is free.
