Title: Does this forum do some SEO for Google
Post by: michael2005 on September 24, 2005, 06:41:44 PM
I have a question for the developer of this site.
Do you use some mods or other search engine optimization tool for Google to get a better Page Rank (PR) so that Google Boot spider all of your posts. I ask this because I see that a lot of the post at this site's forum have got a high page rank and I would like it for my site too.

Actually its developers. There are a few of them. http://www.simplemachines.org/about/team.php I'm not one, but I  will say this. SMf is current on all the w3 standards. While google doesn't come out and say "this is how we rank pages." There are many SMF sites ranked on the 1st page, if not #1. To get you site up there you have to edit the meta name="description" & the meta name="keywords". I know my site gets spiders every day from google/yahoo/msn/alexa etc... I don't think SMF impedes your chances of getting ranks higher it that is what you are asking. Now won't guarantee a #1 rank spot. To get that you need what all search engines are looking for.....content.

Thanks for your answer.
Is this the only thing I should do to improve my chances that Google index all my sites?

I changed the keywords OK, but how do you suggest we modify the description line?

Quote<meta name="description" content="', $context['page_title'], '" />

What line of code I have to include where to change description and keywords?

Thanks for the answer.

These are the two lines in index.template.php

Quote
        <meta name="description" content="', $context['page_title'], '" />
        <meta name="keywords" content="PUT YOUR KEYWORDS HERE SEPARATED BY COMMAS" />

The keyword change is pretty straight forward, but I'm not sure what to do with the description line.

We use google sitemap here. I don't know if it helps with page rank, probably not.

I never actually though Meta tags were important...but i added 100 keywords just for the fun of it.

The reason this site does so well in the search results is because of the huge number of backlinks generated by the links in the copyright section of the forum.

Google pays little (if any) attention to Meta tags. Get lots of links and google will spider and rank your posts.
