Title: Long links
Post by: Owdy on January 27, 2004, 02:27:21 PM
Should this link wrap or what is that word? :P
http://media.rtl.nl/web/components/shows/idols2/2004/week02/zondag_simply_the_best.avi.MiMedia_WM_364K_V8.wmv

This is same thing as that code thing, scrolling sideways. Very unprofessional looking and annoying...

I have always preferred it when the software shrinks the url to read

Like on vB, which messes up when someone edits the post and  breaks the url ;D.

Gotta love "professional solutions" ;D

Is that really a problem with vB... that is great.

Why can't you just do this

LInk here (http://media.rtl.nl/web/components/shows/idols2/2004/week02/zondag_simply_the_best.avi.MiMedia_WM_364K_V8.wmv)

Maybe someone can write a little JS pop-up window that will ask for the link, then the name they want it to have, kinda like on AIM when you click the add link button ;)

I was thinking of making this a theme option, that users can choose to have JS popups for the img/url etc tags instead of doing what it does now... the problem is [Unknown] would kill me as he hates them with a passion :P Instead I may do that as a mod (I have way too many mod idea's queued up right now)

Happens on WHT and they run a very recent ver so yes, would think they would fix it but apparently not ;D

Man I am not that passionate about most things. The only time I even use vehement is when I am describing my Mom (she is a very passionate Italian woman).

If [Unknown] is that adamant about it I would personally be pleased as punch with the inelegant JS solution.

Mmmkey. THis is one way to do it ;D

I think that is a decent solution in terms of readability but it often can kill functionality.  Makes it very hard to see where a link goes.

Indeed.  It can also lead to link stuffing, as well as problems with copying... it's just an all around annoying solution, imho.

so what do you think is the best solution [Unknown]?

What about just having it wrap to the next line if it is too long?

In this topic, Firebird doesn't show scroll bars - the long link goes outside the window :-\.

i got the same thing as Daniel (using FB 0.7), my IE shows the same thing too

maybe we should just leave it to the users to fix their own URLs
or assign moderators to do that...

Same here IE6 . I thought that was planned that way. :D  It does that with big images too sometimes.

Yeah, and FB writes the URL's also outside the table. Opera 7.x makes a linebreak (as it should be ?).
