Can someone point me to the right location please, if I want to place a banner right at the top of the forum which file do I need to edit?

theme > index.template.php i believe. You could also use an Ad mod to better manage this. I just let simpleportal do it all, it's just as advance. http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/?mod=1104
