Title: Forum Post Exchange
Post by: The Parson on May 20, 2017, 10:10:21 AM
(http://forumposting.net/writer.png) (http://forumposting.net)
I'm trying an experiment with a forum post exchanges everyone. There's been a couple online before, but the exchange owners really didn't seem to have the time to keep them running. I've been running web sites for the better part of 20 years, and have always stuck with my ideas. I believe this will work to get posters to your new forums.

It's on an SMF board and all you need to do is create a free account, introduce yourself, then make a posting offer. It's all on the barter system and won't cost a dime. The only criteria is that the posts are clean, thought out, and what you would want on your own board.

The URL is http://forumposting.net and the invitation is open for everyone.

Thanks

I would suggest updating your SMF to 2.0.13 at least.

That takes a complete re-install doesn't it?

Nicely laid out. A little bright for my tastes but other than that, very nice.

I thange the theme to something simpler. How does that look now?

Looking good. You really need to update SMF.

I've tried both methods to update the version just now and no joy. Wonder what's wrong. Each time I get this message:

QuoteAn Error Has Occurred!
Although the package was downloaded to the server it appears to be empty. Please check the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory are both writable. If you continue to experience this problem you should try extracting the package on your PC and uploading the extracted files into a subdirectory in your Packages directory and try again. For example, if the package was called shout.tar.gz you should:
1) Download the package to your local PC and extract it into files.
2) Using an FTP client create a new directory in your "Packages" folder, in this example you may call it "shout".
3) Upload all the files from the extracted package to this directory.
4) Go back to the package manager browse page and the package will be automatically found by SMF.
Am I going to have to do this manually with FTP?

What are you downloading exactly? You can't use the large upgrade with the package manager, you download the patches for the package manager.

smf_2-0-14_upgrade.zip
Yes, through the package manager...

you need to use https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/downloads/smf_patch_2.0.14.tar.gz
and similar patches to upgrade your forum not what you are doing.

Well, that didn't work very well!
QuoteThe package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

You can't just install 2.0.14 on 2.0.7, you need to do 2.0.8 first, then 2.0.9. Each patch is just the incremental fixes.

You can find the patches in your package manager there should be a link there.

Or you can grab them at

I didn't mean for you to change the theme, I was just saying it was bright for me personally. Some people like bright themes, some like dark. :)

OK, it allowed me to update to 13, but no further because of our PHP version.
QuoteThis update requires a minimum of PHP 5.3.0 in order to function. (You are currently running PHP 5.2.17)
I can live with that until Hostgator updates. I think!

Actually, you'll need PHP 5.4 or higher in order to upgrade to 2.0.14 ... the part about requiring 5.3 is being corrected.

Is this a right away thingy, or do we get a notification?

Aw, that's OK. I didn't like the previous one either. This one suits my taste better.

So is this something I can ask Hostgator to do?

you can ask that does not mean they will actually do it.

You should be able to do it from your control panel.

A quick search for 'hostgator upgrade php' on Google suggests this page: http://support.hostgator.com/articles/hosting-guide/php-5-6-server-update

The principle should be the same on your account even if you don't go to 5.6.
