Title: backup problem with ver. 1.1.13 and php upgrade question
Post by: mobile_bob on September 30, 2020, 07:13:42 PM
need some help and figured here is the place to start

the forum in question "microcogen.info"
we have been using simple machines ver. 1.1.13 for several years, maybe 10?
we are hosted on hostmonster

the last successful full backup was done back in may of this year, and it is about 37.6mb in size, that is with file structure saved

since then i can only backup and get a reported size of a couple hundred bytes, which tells me there is an issue of some sort

so that is question #1,  what am i doing wrong, and how can i get a current full backup of the forum downloaded

also the forum failed to load this afternoon, and i spent time with tech support at hostmonster
the current php they use is ver 7.2 or 7.4?  i think he said 7.2

the forum php is ver. 5.4

after some wrangling and me sweating profusely, the tech guy, who is unfamiliar with simplemachines software, was able to go into
what he referred to as "HT access" and found the php "blank" he was unable to type in 5.4, but after several tries he go it to take 7,2
and then deleted the 7.2 and typed in 5.4 and the heavens opened up again, and the forum was back online.

therefore question #2, how do i upgrade simple machines 1.1.13 to something current enough to work with php ver. 7.2?

are the two problems related?

maybe the version of simple machines ver. 1.1.13 is old enough that we can no longer do a full backup? therefore need to upgrade to ver. 2.x or ???  and maybe the the newer version works with php 7.2??

i am no programmer, i simply run the forum, which pretty much has always ran itself without issues, so maybe understandably i am a bit shaken to see a blank page when i try to log in, and i am fearful of losing over 10 years of information contained in the forum.

any help would be greatly appreciated, advice or ???

and is i need to provide more information, please feel free to ask away,  just remember i am only a bit smarter than a bag of hammers when it comes to the nuts and bolts of what makes this software work.

thanks in advance

Yes SMF 1.1.x only supports PHP 5.4 to 5.6.

SMF 2.0.18 supports PHP 5.4 TO PHP 7.3

Newer versions of PHP cause the issue for 1.1.x to stop working.
SMF has an upgrade from 1.1.x to 2.0.x

I would add that 1.1.13 is massively out of date for security patches, so you really should not be running it anyway, even if you can get your host to allow PHP 5.6. At the very least you should be running 1.1.21, but even that is only postponing the inevitable when it comes to upgrading.

As vbgamer says: 2.0.x is the way to go, and upgrading should not present any particular difficulties, providing you do not try to run 1.1.x themes or mods on 2.0.x.

You should be able to export your database with phpmyadmin, the db and /attachments contain all your important content.  If you can get that, you can upload the 2.0.17 upgrade package and run upgrade.php, it might even work.  Good luck on Hostmonster :P, you'll need it.
