Title: Member Map ?
Post by: vkot on March 09, 2004, 06:15:49 AM
Will there be something like the MemberMap mod?
I wanted to install it in my YaBBSE forum but then decided to wait until the first release of SMF (a long time, I must say) because maybe it will be included or incompatible.

(I don't know if someone already requested it, it's hard to browse 31 pages of Feature Requests.)

It has already been ported by Gobalopper and will be available as a mod

just scan the first page, and do a search for "membermap".

I wonder if the graphics will be the same ?
If anyone needs the matching British Isles map just give me a shout

Actually its completely different this time, instead of placing pins on a single map your pin is relative to a world map with other the maps based on specified co-ordinates/scale. You can see it in action on my board and a few other charter members have it installed, I think Kris was saying he already had 200 pins or something.

Big G

You've excelled yourself  ;D

That looks a zillion times better than what came before.
Totally awesome  8)

This is nice! I see it doesn't have fixed-size maps anymore. But, can we add our own maps?
I had started to make detailed maps for Greece (prefectures, cities), but now I stopped and I'm waiting for the release of SMF.

You could but it would be a little harder then last time. I suppose if you knew the scaling of that map based on the world map... Of course you could always just make your own maps to replace the current ones.

oops! things are getting complicated now... I really need to make a Greece map, it wouldn't be nice to have hundreds of pins covering our little country. Can/will you provide this information in your mod or here?
Title: Re: Member Map ?
Post by: Gobalopper on March 11, 2004, 02:03:08 AM
I can create a zoomed in map of Greece for you and I will give some details once the public beta is out and I have the next version ready.

Great! do that, please. I will then need to make maps for the prefectures, I hope it won't be too difficult to adjust them for membermap :-\

I got 265 right now.

Have to zoom in on the detailed maps to see them better.

265 looks like this :)

That's a real good job!

But I'm in much the same situation as vkot, our membership is solely based in the UK, so given that it's a great mod it going to be hell getting all the pins to show accurately.
Any localised map development in the pipeline?
Title: Re: Member Map ?

The world map is just one of the maps. The current version has these maps:

Africa
Australia
Canada
East Asia
Europe
Middle America
Russia
South America
USA
West Asia
North-West Europe
World

When will this be avaiable? I have a few hundred pins on my Yabbse membermap. Will these be lost in the convert?

Thanks,

Mark.

Should be soon now that my classes are over for the term. And no you can't convert pins as the new version is completely different.

Post by: Randfee on April 15, 2004, 12:30:45 AM
well, where is the problem with making a version where everybody can define a picture size and with that, create his own maps?

for instance, I`d like to have

1) a worldmap
2) a germany map
3) a city map (for all the students, which street do you live in etc.)

I don`t see the problem with that?!?! Or just go and create a "new map" function with given picture-dimensions...

checked your map, like the idea but noticed pins are not fixed to the map position. Try resizing your window and you will see what I mean..
Title: Re: Member Map ?

Randfee the basic idea is that there is a "worldmap" and all other maps are based off of that map. So the world map is like the big canvas and all pins fit somewhere on it. If you wanted a map of Germany you would take the world map and crop it so it only contains that area. And then if you wanted to zoom in you could then define the zoom level.
This does make it a little harder to do really zoomed in maps at the city level. But you would be able to make Germany your "world map" and then base all your pins off of that.

Oh already know about that problem 7summits. It isn't a huge deal but its something I am going to try to fix.

And what about those who want a world map, a couple of country maps and some city maps? On my site I have mostly members from Greece (where I want to have city maps) and Cyprus, and some of them in Europe or the rest of the world. The concept of the previous member map mod was simple and I could make maps easily.

Is there a possibility that we can have the previous (YaBBSE) member map mod in SMF?
Are there any alternative mods?
Title: Re: Member Map ?

I might release a mod to the mod to make it similar to the old one in that aspect but it won't be in the initial release.

Perhaps instead of completely rewriting this, converting the YSE membermap script would be a better idea?  After all, there's no sense reinventing the wheel...
Title: Re: Member Map ?
Post by: Grudge on June 09, 2004, 09:33:24 AM
Firstly - it is already rewritten I believe...

Secondly - SMF is wildly different to YaBBSE. Porting a YaBBSE MOD is akin to rewriting it - in fact I would be absolutely amazed if any single YaBBSE mod would work in SMF without being rewritten.
Title: Re: Member Map ?
Post by: ipggi on June 11, 2004, 04:54:32 PM
That makes sense.  Well, at the very least I hope there is a way to convert YSE membermap info over to the new map....  I have nearly 4000 members that have location info already in their profiles.  heheh.

Well there currently isn't any way to transfer the pins over as this is an entirely new system... I might write something to do it eventually but don't count on it, sorry.

:o

OK, I can understand that G, but considering the number of current users I have it doesn't make me too enthusiastic about converting to the new version. No disrespect or anything, but that means a lot of work for us admins and it may not be worth it. But I do understand what you are saying.
Title: Re: Member Map ?
Post by: ipggi on June 27, 2004, 11:07:25 PM
Will there be the option to use several different regional maps as there was before, or will it only be a single, large world map like it is now?  My board has users worldwide and that means there will be several "blobs" of pins if it only uses one map.  Kinda cluttered I'd think...

why don't you guys just get a bravenet one? its easy...
Title: Re: Member Map ?
Post by: ElLizzardo on September 02, 2004, 04:03:55 PM
IMHO two issues with the Bravenet:

1) Not as cool or flexible as having it integrated in your own system
2) They have pop up advertising, which everyone hates.

Anybody interested in a stand alone system could check out globetrotter. I've been using it now for about two months...be warned, it's a monstrous pain to set up but it's pretty cool and flexible

demo: http://www.kinglizzard.com/map/index.php

PS, this is not intended as spam, but as an alternative program for people needing a member map system

yes, there are a lot of issues and I had to spend four hours recoding and setting it up...but since I got it up and running it's been running smoothly.
Xenolth has a lot of clean up to do on their product.

Thanks ElLizzardo I have it up and running smoothly now thanks to your "other" posts on it. Many thanks. Have you tryied to make your own custom maps? Just curious. The U.S. map is a bit small for my 1500 plus member board. :S
Title: Re: Member Map ?
Post by: ElLizzardo on September 08, 2004, 06:43:09 PM
If the same size window will do, just change the map.gif image to whatever map image you want and that will do it...If you want larger window dimensions I can find where in the code governs the image map size.

Ok, I got member map mod installed but I am a little confused the way it is setup now. It looks like people can just put themselves on the map with email address and website. Isn't it  possible to just pull all the data from members and put them on the map?
