I'm having a problem with this part: Initiate an FTP connection to the server and create a directory on the server -How exactly do I do this? ???

I downloaded FireFTP and I can't seem to connect. There is no error message it just says unable to connect. I've been searching this forum for three days and I still can't figure this out. I'd really appreciate any help. :)

P.S. Here's my site is it even compatable? http://eyesoutfront.proboards62.com/

From what I can see at proboards they only offer hosting of their forums, not an actual hosting service. You'll need another host to install SMF.

So are there any free hosting sites out there that are reliable?

There are some. Most have ads. Checkout Hosts and Hosting (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=4.0), and also [FREE] SMF For Free (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=46107.0) which is a similar service to proboards.
