SMF Version: SMF 1.0.7
I was following the instructions for installation in the online manual. I'm a little confused.
It says to download the installsmf file, which I did, along with the theme I'm going to be using.
Then it says to upload the smf files to your server (or something like that). Anyway, I got a lot of "file already exists" last night when I did this in 3D-FTP. I installed the install file first, then the theme file.
My question is, does the install file have to be uploaded? It seems like the theme file has all the install stuff in it.
Thanks for any help!
is your forum up and running? usually themes are installed via the package manager.

Not yet. This is a fresh install on a new webhost, so the package manager isn't available.
My question isn't about how to install a theme. It's whether or not BOTH the install SMF file AND the theme file have to be installed, because it looks like all the install files are included in the theme files.
Can I get an answer, please?
Thanks!
themes are installed via the package manager. if your forum is installed and running, you have a package manager in your admin section. you upload the theme through that and voila'.
otherwise i haven't a clue what you mean

As I said above, this is a FRESH INSTALL ON A NEW HOST. SMF IS NOT INSTALLED YET.
The other night, I was downloading the smf.install file (the online manual tells you to do this in the "Obtaining SMF" part), and I also downloaded the file for the theme I'm going to use. When I went to upload both the smf.install file and the theme file, I got a lot of "file already exists" messages.
My question is, is it necessary to install BOTH the smf.install file AND the theme file when doing a fresh install, since there seem to be identical files in the theme and the smf install files?
Install SMF first and get it working. After that, use the themes area in the admin panel to install the theme you want.
You dont need to upload custom themes just as you're installing SMF, just as long as you have the Default theme upon installation you can log into your Admin Center and install a theme by going;
Admin > Themes and Layout

Perfect, thank you!
