Please bear with me... I am dealing with a forum and website that was literally dumped in my lap when my previous administrator decided he was way to busy to help me any longer and left me with these forums as a tool to figure out what I am doing. To say the least, I have not a clue what I am doing, and have only been an admin for much lesser style forums that are dumb-user friendly. I also have very limited knowledge on running a website/servers etc.
That being said: I am in need of some big time help. I need to upgrade the forums as the admin section tells me there is an update. I have tried to do so by following directions as well as doing some things I have read here but I get "package directory unwrittable" back as an error.
Mind you I need any type of explination in a "for dummies" format as I have NEVER used this before. I am sorry if this is a totally absurd post but I feel like a complete idiot.
If someone can direct me somewhere that might have a great tutorial to read, I'd VERY much appreciate it.

In your FTP, CHMOD your Packages directory (and everything in it if you have to) to 777.
The doc site is a good source of info for beginners.
