This mod will split the current View Attachments permission into two. View Attachments and Download Attachments.
Thanks for this great feature!!!
But I like to ask a second option, I am looking very long for this in 1.1 RC2
Is it possible to see attached images (not only the link but also the preview), but not to download attached files???
Or a second attachement file option a membergroup, like guests can see attechement up to 1 Mb and members up to 100 Mb ???
I believe this does the same for images. Didn't try out the mod with images.
The second option would be a bit more advanced. Need to look at it in the future. When ever i have time that is.
thx for responding, if it's difficult to create time, I can pay you, not too many $$$ but enough to think about it ;)
Plz PM me.
Time is the problem ;). If I had the time I would look into it. Maybe in a month or so.
Ok, will be great.
I will send you some time (in minutes and a few seconds ;) )
lol ok.
Umm do you have RC3?
Oh ok. Well it should work on RC3.
I just installed this, everything went fine, but I have no clue where to configure this mod. There aren't any additional options in the permissions configuration and unregistered guests can still not see attachments at all.
This is where the other attachments permissions are located. Check to see that language strings are there.

Where exactly do I check for these strings?
Umm ManagePermissions.english.php if I'm correct.

The file doesn't seem to be altered in any way. So which strings do I need to add manually? And shouldn't this already be done by the Package Manager?
Look at the install.xml file and the language strings are there.
Please, see this topic http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=118961.0 don't want to post all again.
Thanks, really like this mod though, and want to use it.
Did you check to see that the permissions where set correctly?

Yes, checked and checked(about dozens times), both guest permission and guest board permission.
For the sake of this topic, will reinstall mod, and make sure permissions are set correctly.
Edit: [link removed] photo not showing for guests with this mod in place, just guests can not, and when I log in image will download, have guests only view and not download attachments, checked and rechecked permissions.
Ok I get what you mean now. its actually how I wrote the mod. For images it doesn't make sense to show them but not allow to download since you can just right click and save as. If you want ill give you the changes necessary to do this.

I was looking at it and it seems like there is no way to do this w/o allowing the members to download the files.

You mean since guests wouldn't be able to download that would be same for members as well, seeing red x's doesn't make any sense. ;)
It shows that for members also?
Does anyone know how to edit the display file for 1.0.8 forums? When I install it it says Failure for the display file. I would really like to use this mod :(
I think this option exists in 1.0.8.
I'd like to report an odd behaviour of this mod on my 1.1 RC3 installation:
When I'm logged out (don't have permission to download attachments) and click on one, everything is fine and I get the permission denied error prompting me to login or register.
But when I log in to my account a few minutes later from the board index, the download dialogue for the requested attachment suddenly pops up.
I can understand that the request is saved so it can be processed when you login when prompted, but I don't see why it should still be active when I have visited an entirely different site in the meantime and come back minutes later to my forum to just log on. The request also seems to be active for every member loging on to his/her account on the same computer (even for those who didn't even request the download).
I think this might pose a serious security flaw.
I don't see how this mod can cause that since it's just a simple permission change. I'll look more into this though. What browser are you using?

Just tested. It's doing the same thing in Firefox 2.0, IE 6 and Opera 8. It's like a time paradox, really weird.
Once I have clicked an attachment that I'm not permitted to download, the forum prompts me with a download window as soon as I log on at a later time with whatever account on that computer/IP.
uninstall the mod and try it out and see if it works correctly.

Didn't change anything. The only way of cancelling the download request is by closing the browser. Otherwise, the next person to log on (on the same computer) is prompted with the download window.
It does make sense in a way, but after declining the initial login prompt with the permission error, the request should be cancelled, right?
It doesn't seem like an issue with the mod, but rather with the way SMF itself handles downloads ... it's still annoying. I asked some of my members to test this as well - I'm expecting first reports shortly.

Attachments range from < 1 MB to ~ 10 MB. It's happening with all attachments regardless of their size. Once you get the permission denied error, the next person to log on to the forum on the same computer will be prompted with the download window.
See original post describing the problem here (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=103259.msg814824#msg814824).

"It seems that you are not allowed to download or view attachments on this board."
If you uncheck the Download box for this mod in Permissions (to disallow users from downlaoding images), does that also disallow them from viewing the attachments?
Jay, can you please look into the problem I'm having with this mod. When guests click on an attachment download link, they're being redirected to a login page. When they go back to the thread without logging in, the next person to log in from the same computer is being prompted with a download window for that attachment! Oh and for some reason, your mod allows guests to download GIF image attachments despite them not having download permissions. :-(
I've tested this myself on various machines with different browsers and it's happening every time. All my users are reporting the same problem.
Seems like I have to work on this mod a bit more. I'll try to take some time to look into it.
I'd very much appreciate this. Maybe you can even add an option to show attachments without links (or just a note saying that you have to login). That would be the perfect solution for me.
Oh and you might want to make your mod compatible with the latest release of SMF, although I think it will already work with it (still using RC3 here).
I have this mod installed i have set it to let members see the preview jpeg image but not be able to download the zip file the problem is the members that are set to able to view but not download can't view the image
I'll have to look into the logic for this mod and see if I can make it work better.

Like I said before. This mod has NOTHING to do with filesizes. Check your settings.
thanks ! it works
The matrix of permissions now has three items:
SEE | DL
---------
X O
---------
X X
---------
O O
Although this might seem really odd, but I do need the fourth option which is: cannot see the attachemtn BUT can download it. This has to do with dragging mp3-files into winamp: the logged-on user can see the attachments and drag the attachment to winamp, and then winamp is a "guest", who needs to be able to download the file. When a "real" guest is browsing the forum, he/she may not see the files (and thus the probability of them finding the attachemnts is nearly 0%).
Thanks for listening. Any possibility to get this change to the mod?
After looking at the mod, i am inclined to say that it doesn't do whatit promises. It does not change the original behaviour ov the "view attachment permission". The original "view attachment permission" remains as "view and download"-permission, and the new permission is "view-only"-permission.
So I changed the mod. Of course this makes it kindof a new mod. My mod modifies the original permission to become a "view-only"-permission, and adds a "download-only"-permission. With my mod you can then actually allow a guest to download an attachment, without seeing it. Apart from the obvious reason that I needed this change, I think this makes the permissions in general more manageable. The checkboxes actually do what they promise, view, download, both or neither.
Should I upload this "new" mod to this thread, or as a totally new mod?
Doesn't work good for me...
When I check the box "view attachments" on Guests permissions - they see no image... only "x" sign saying that there is no picture... They have to have "download attachments" option checked - and then they can see them...
But it shouldn't work that way, huh? :-\
Can this be fixed?! Cuz that mod would be really usefull :)
OK, lets define download. Downloading means transferring something to the browser. The browser then either displays the content (like images) if it can, or asks to save it to disk (if it cannot display it).
So int this case, if you would have "preview", the image would already have to be downloaded to the browser.
If it is not the preview you are wondering about, but rather would want to get rid of the "X"-image, then it seems like tough luck. The isAllowed-method does not seem to be available in the template, and thus you cannot use it to say something like "if I have the right to see that there's an attachmtn available, show a link, but if I also have the download-permission, also show a thumbnail".
I tested this, and could not use the isAllowed-method in the template succesfully. So changing this is out of my scope at least.
Here's the version of the mod that allows you to define the full matrix as explained above.
I'm using smf 1.1.2
I have this error.... >:( >:(
Somebody can help me please?
Does this mod work with MP3 files and 1.1.4? I mean, would it do the same as with images: ask the user if he wants to download or to listen only.
It is probable (haven't tested it) that the mod will work with SMF 1.1.4 however it has nothing at all to do with playing MP3 files and thus cannot do any more than treat such a file as a simple attachment.

Yes, but if the browser trys to open a MP3 player he will most likely play it, using an external player or something like that. What is the default action for opening a MP3 file by web browsers?
To play an MP3 file offered as an attachment the user would have to fully download the file...the file would not be treated as a streaming music source...there is a mod that can offer you such a service:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=121 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=121)
You can't open a non streaming MP3 (or other media) file without downloading it.

Brilliant, the mod now works!! :)
Just one problem, rather than images creating the dreaded red X when they are clicked on, would it be possible to display a message saying "You do not have permission to view the fullsize image", and when clicking on another filetype, display "You do not have permission to download this file"?
Regards

any hope for this in 2.0?
i know the permissions mod been added to 2.0 but it does not have it split into 2 like this and well yea thats a great feature needed for some of us.
A year old topic.
I'm not sure, but isn't there a totally new permission enhancement for 2.0?

Thank you very much for this great mod!
There only one issue I found with this mod, is when "Display image attachments as pictures under post" and "Resize images when showing under posts" options enabled, it will show broken images.
A quick work around this is to force disable these features if download attachment not allowed.
Find in Sources/Display.php:
if (!empty($modSettings['attachmentEnable']) && (allowedTo('view_attachments') || allowedTo('view_attachments2')))
Insert above:
if (!allowedTo('view_attachments') && allowedTo('view_attachments2'))
{
$modSettings['attachmentShowImages'] = 0;
$modSettings['attachmentThumbnails'] = 0;
}

Yes, I know this is an old topic, but I need this mod for 2.0.15 version...
Is that possible ? ... I'm not familiarized with 2.0.x versions...
You can set this setting via Admin --> Members --> Permissions --> General Permissions --> (Membergroup Name) --> Modify.
If you can't see the settings the way they are in the screen shot, switch to Classic View ;).

View attachment and download are separate ideas here, the idea being to show people things to encourage them to do something, e.g. show them it exists to guests, to get them to register to download.
Usually discourages people.

since the mod author has not been online since December and the mod itself has not been touched since 1.1RC versions... no, I think I am fairly safe in saying that this particular mod will not be updated for 2.0.x
As Arantor says, these sort of mods do not encourage people to register... they cause people to find another site.
By default (and on purpose) SMF never shows an action which the user can not complete.
Thanks Arantor and Kindred for your reply. :)
I want to "Show" to guests the attached files, just the filenames, and then when the guest try to download it to be redirected to "Register Page".
That's I need ;)
we understand what you need.
we're telling you that it's a bad idea.
and also, this mod was never updated for 2.0.x and will not run on 2.0.x -- so you would have to request a band new mod, since this mod license will not allow anyone other than the original author to modify/distribute it.
Submitted a new one.
