SMF Version: Version not known
Hello,
I am a rookie. I went to this board and understand almost nothing. I am asking for someone to hold my hand through this. If I a posting in the wrong area or my level of understanding is too low please feel free Mr. Administrator to delete this.
I have a home website http://www.fmtravels03.com/ (http://www.fmtravels03.com/)
I have it on Apollo Hosting http://www.apollohosting.com/ (http://www.apollohosting.com/)
I have struggled through to this point to teach myself Dreamweaver 4.
My wife wants me to set up a message board that she and her friends can use to discuss the hobby of rubber stamping.
I downloaded this:
SMF 1.0.7 - install zip tar.gz tar.bz2 231505
Installation package for SMF 1.0.7 (contains English only, download other languages below.)
Use this for a new installation, just run install.php after uploading all the files.
She selected this: Dilber MC
Dilber MC is a professional looking, light colored theme with 12 different colors.

SMF Versions: 1.1 RC2
I unzipped both files on my computer (XP pro) and using the FTP in dreamweaver sent them to my site. I then tried to set it up following the instructions.
Geez I am lost. Please, if you care to respond to this plea be very simple and complete with your suggestions. I understand 1/10th of what I read here. If I am over my head please tell me.
I activated up my MySQL Database. I have no idea what version I have.
I get a screen asking me for my FTP user name and password. I have entered them and they do not work.
I am lost. Anyone looking to do several good deeds and willing overlook volumes of entry level questions then I am game.
My apologies to you pros and my thanks to anyone willing to take me on as a project.
Thanks for reading this,
Bruce Christianson
I'll give you hand.
Confirm you uplaoded smf and do you know what directory? i.e. did you send the smf folder to your root directory (basically straight up to http://www.fmtravels03.com/) or to a seperate one?
do you know your database name, username, and password?
Thanks Chris,
First I went into the contol panal of my host and set up mySQL. The name of that database is "fmtravels03 com" Then I downloaded the install program and the theme my wife wants to use onto my computer. I opened each of the two files and copied all of their contents into a folder called 'forum'. That folder I placed onto my site located on my hard drive. Then I used the FTP from Dreamweaver 4 to put the 'forum' file directly onto my site. "fmtravels03.com" Then I tried to go through the steps and could not get past the screen asking me for my FTP username and password. I do know them and I did enter them but it did not let me advance.
Do I run this install program and theme before I put it on my host site? I am lost.
Thanks,
Bruce
Actually, what you need to do is look at the bottom and set the files/directories to the proper CHMOD permission. I don't know how the DW FTP program works, but on MOST FTP clients, you can right click and click on CHMOD or PERMISSIONS.
Remember... the numbers have to add up. There's three groups: Owner, Group, Other
Permissions are set up as follows:
READ = 4
WRITE = 2
Execute = 1
So if it's asking for 777, you need to make sure that Read/Write/Execute (sometimes identified as rwx) is set for all three groups.
The install page will tell you what files need to be set at (same with folders). Just keep refreshing that page until you get your permissions set correctly. Once all permissions are set correctly, that first page changes to the actual installation page.
As a note, since I didn't see it mentioned before, Dilber MC is not compatible with SMF 1.0.7. Look at the version note and see it is for 1.1 RC2. There is no 1.0.x version of the theme, so you'd need to use 1.1 RC2 if you needed that theme.
Hello,
I did remove the incorrect install program and put the appropriate one on. I also went into my control panel for my host and changed the permission levels so they all three showed "R", "W", and "E". There was also an "S" for one of them. I left that turned off. Having done both of these things I again tried. I got one step further, I think. I was prompted for MySQL server name, user name, password, database name, and table prefix. I then went to ApolloHosting's 24/7 help chat to get this information and found it to be down. Still stuck. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Bruce
Hi Bruce, does your host use cPanel as control panel? If so, you need to create a user for the database and give it access to it.
