Simple Machines Community Forum

Simple Machines is happy to release a new update to Simple Machines 1.0.  This update will fix a vulnerability that was recently discovered in PHP (malfunctioning zend_hash_del_key_or_index() function). Also included are a small number of bug fixes found since 1.0.7. The vulnerability exists in PHP versions below 4.4.3 and 5.1.4.

We encourage everyone to upgrade their forum to 1.0.8 and all server administrators to upgrade their PHP to at least 4.4.3 or 5.1.4.

As this is a critical release, you can easily upgrade by one of the following ways:

• Use the package manager in your administration center - one click, and you're done.
• Download the update archive file, and upload all of the files from it.
• Download the modification file attached to this message, and manually modify the files according to it.

The SMF 1.0.8 is the main files of a newest version (update)

how to install this new update > i did not get it as always !

1.0.8 is not to be compared with 1.1 RC2, because 1.0.8 is the latest stable and final version of SMF. 1.1 is a newer SMF version that is still in development, but expected to be released as final soon.

Heh, I think we've never released three versions (1.0.8, 1.1 RC2-2, and 1.1 RC3) as well as a Charter Member update package at the same time before. So it's kinda hard for users too to spread their attention. Anyways, I'm glad they respond to the 1.1 RC3 topic more. After all, that's sort of our flagship ;)

Try downloading the package from the first message and uploading it to the Packages directory of your SMF installation. Also it might sometimes help to create a sub directory /Packages/temp/ and chmod that to 777.

I get the same corrupt error message when trying to use the simple upgrade link in the Package Manager.  I have 1.0.7.  Tried uninstalling the packages in reverse order (only 2 mods, User Email System and Ad Management), but the Ad Management uninstall fails on Modifications.english.php and index.template.php.  Restored my backup forum files and tried downloading the 1.0.8 update and then uploading it in Package Manager, but got the corrupt file error.

I did some minor cosmetics tweaking of the default theme files, mainly index.template.php to add include files at header and footer for my own ads (ad management not what I'd hoped for) and additional row under forum title, changed the default button set, etc.  Does the 1.0.8 update only work with an untouched default theme?

Nevermind - I figured it out.  I'll spell it out, in case it helps others...

I followed the SMF Upgrade instructions in the Online Manual (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject) and sucessfully upgraded to 1.0.8. I backed-up the folder, then downloaded the upgrade zip, copied the extracted files to my forum folder, ran upgrade.php from the browser, deleted upgrade.php.  no errors, no worries!  This worked out well with the mods issue, afterall.  It actually left the mods in the Package Manager like they were uninstalled, so I was able to delete them and add the mods I wanted.

Fyi: The old User Email System mod gives an error if you try to reinstall it after the upgrade.  You need to delete it and download and install the newly updated mod, for 1.0.8.

Other than that, I just had to readd the code to the few pages where I tweaked the look-and-feel, my modified stylesheet, and replaced the button set I chose.  I hope the upgrade later-on to the gold version of 1.1 goes that well!

So I click, and the next page states:

But I always get this error:

How can I solve this Failure error?  Any help is appreciated.

..You should try clearing your browsers cache and refreshing the page, maybe it's a cookie problem...

Works perfect with 1.07 and german language. I couldn't update
from paket manager (like I can update nearly nothing with it) so

after updating, when accessing the admin area, it no longer asks for my password, eventhough i do not have this feature disabled. Is it supposed to be that way now in 1.08?

It asks for your password once per session. If you try logging in using another computer, or if you clear your browsers cookies and sessions, then it should again ask you.

logged out, tried what you suggested. Logged back on, clicked on the admin button and had instant acess, no need to redo password again. Weird

After just logging in, it doesn't ask for the password, because you've recently proved that you are the admin (by logging into the account). ıf you stay logged in, without doing anything in the admin panel, your admin session should expire and ask for your password. Wait for 30 minutes, for example.

Well for these guys who are having some problems updating their forum to SMF 1.0.8.

If you are using SMF 1.0.7 just follow me

1: Download the zip file from here (click here and save it) (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_1-0-8_update.zip)

Note: Download the zip file named: SMF 1.0.8 - update this is not a packge is an update that' it...

2: Now unzip (unpack) the file using WinRar or Winzip, whatever you want, just make sure to unpack it.

3: Now connect to your hosting/server using an FTP Program such as CuteFTP

4: Now using you FTP program navigate trought your forum directory, for example the path will be:
/yourdomainname.com/forum  or /forum.yourdomainname 

Note: Don't navigate trought your forum directory using your broxser (IE or Firefox Not at all) navigate to your forum directory using your FTP Program.

5: Now, upload all files and folders that you unzip (unpack) from the file we just downloaed. If the FTP program tell you that the files and folders are already in your server just replace them, just hit "yes to all" to replace all the new files and folders with the ones we have in our forum.

6: Now that you had upload all files and folders to your forum directory you need to run the upgrade.php

Open IE or Firefox and go to: www.you-forum-domain.com/upgrade.php

This will upgrade your forum to the latest version, just follow the instructions.

Note: If you are using another language as default instead of english it might give you an error when running upgrade.php you have to download the latest language version and upload it to your forum, here a list of languages with RC3:

Please follow this steps in order to update your forum 1.0.7 to 1.0.8 and RC2 to RC3 just make sure to download the right files because here we download the update for 1.0.7 to 1.0.8

Last Thing... Remember to delete the file named: upgrade.php from your forum directory after updating your forum

I get the same problem. Is there any other link I could use to directly update from 1.0.6 to 1.0.8? Or at least a way to update from 1.0.6 to 1.0.7 so then we can activate it with the given link?

Just download the updated files for 1.0.7 and open it and upload them...
the index.php file just updates the smf version.. SO you can manually change that if you got mod installed.

no problems for me with the update from the admin page

Use the package file, extract it and check the .mod file, it has instructions basically on what to modify manually... I had to do this too.

I´ve update to SMF 1.0.8 from Package without problems, but there are files that don´t update, they are: BoardIndex.template.php, Display.template.php and Recent.template.php.
Then, I´ve downloaded the update and I´ve updated manually only the three files but they don´t update.

As far as I can tell, from the list of changed files linked on the first page of this thread, there are just 4 changed files when updating from 1.0.7 to 1.0.8. I don't know why the update package has a lot of extra files, maybe it is for updating older versions.

If you have custom modifications (such as CAPTCHA, or custom profile fields), you'll have to do a compare on each page. Use a tool like Winmerge.

Scroll down and examine each difference in the code. PHP has the beauty of being not too hard to get a general idea about, even for the non-programmer (compare that to Perl!) so you should be able to figure out which changes you should accept. Good mods are well commented, showing where the custom code begins and ends, so this shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Then simply upload and overwrite your old files with your new ones.

Since I have some custom code, the method I describe is the one I followed for this small patch. This took me about 5 minutes, and since my forum isn't very active, I didn't bother to shut it down. In fact, since there seem to be no changes to the database, and no changes to database functions, you can probably safely do this update 'live'.

If you are updating an older version than 1.0.7, this method will not work.

Just to say I've just successfully upgraded my 1.0.7 to 1.0.8. I followed jcroot's step by step instructions - this being my first upgrade with SMF I was being ultra careful and paranoid, and I really appreciated having a step by step idiot's guide - thanks!

I moved to SMF mainly because of upgrade issues with phpBB, and though I've no mods installed on my board I did do a custom theme based on the default theme. I'd kept a list of which files had changes in my theme, but I'd not noted precisely what the changes were - I've done that this time as I've done the upgrade.

My two tips would be when you make any changes to a theme to keep a note of both which files you've made changes in, and the line numbers and what the changes were for (saves much head scratching a couple of months down the line), and to use WinMerge (http://winmerge.org/) that opally suggested if you're manually editing files during upgrades - it really does make it a lot easier to find the changes between the files and help prevent you missing any - I wish I'd known about it when I was doing all the tedious and terrifying phpBB upgrades - well actually, I just wish I'd discovered SMF far earlier - would have saved me no end of bother!  ;)

My forum got hacked twice, both times my site sent info to a step57 site as well as others, and installed a trojan.  Is this a result of the vulnerability in the last verson?

Similar issue.
I'm running 3 forums.  One updated flawlessly, the second shows a "failure" for ./changelog.txt.
What does that mean and can I hit "Proceed" ?

If it's a failure for the changelog.txt and nothing else, then yeah, you can go ahead and click proceed.

Usually you're not hacked, its just a code thats outputted in the template, usually index.template.php :P

I do not need to provide proof, oh ya look at me I would lie about it, lol

and it was index.php that got re wrote, and that is hacked
it took 2secs to fix it, but letting it known that the security flaw is still there

Index.php cannot be editted anyway via SMF, its your account that was hacked. I'm guessing Brute Force(Hackers which have a program which generates random passwords til it gets a match)

Probably your index file was replaced by another account in your server account. Index replacing hacks are about always server problems.

The upgrader is able to upgrade your forum even from 1.0 rc1.

When i upgraded from 1.0.7 to 1.0.8 ( last week ), it was really sweet but for 4 days now, it has been errors over errors. To post replies, this error comes up:

Well, that may be... but I've modified the UI code some, and I'm running MKPortal 1.0.  Pretty sure there would be some heavy work involved going to 1.1 of both SMF and MKPortal, which I don't really want to dive into, at this time. :)

i keep getting this when im upgrading from 1.0.5 to 1.0.7 even after doing as it has suggested, it tells me the files were all "sucess" so im a bit confused with it

Some of the files this package needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and chmoding the files.

I upgraded from phpbb to the lastest download and it was flawless... The only problem I have is using the bridge to FlashChat (aiml bot loading can be a pain), but I can get around that problem. Good work guys!

I just upgraded from 1.0.7 to 1.0.8. In 7, the index showed calendar events correctly. In 8, there is a glitch. I have something on the calendar for Oct 7-8, however, on the index it is showing up as the event is occuring today (Sep. 7). How can I fix this?

Trekkie101, thanks for your message. I heard from another SMF user having problems with CAPTCHA after upgrading. I have CAPTCHA also. I don't see any issues with it in this forum. Or are there any I should kow about, before upgrading to 1.0.8? Like will I need to reinstall CAPTCHA?

Im not sure about that, but to be on the safe side, you could uninstall it and then re-install it after you've updated to 1.0.8. However the package manager version, my top link shouldn't really effect any mods. If it does it should warn you first.

I ftp'ed the files that were in the Updated Source Files Folder, changed the permissions to 755, and went over to the browser to load http://boards.sethroberts.net/upgrade.php and got only "No input file specified." ??? The forum, however, shows that it's at version 1.0.8. Does this mean I am done?  There is no upgrade.php in the directory. I made a second attempt, uploading the files again, and got the same result.

Also, I accidently uploaded, the first time, the new index.php inside the Sources directory. I couldn't recall if there was already an index.php there and overwritten the version that's there. Is this a problem?

If it says 1.0.8 then its safe to assume its done, and if its working fine, then I wouldnt worry any more about it :)

how i can run upgrade.php file on smf 1.07, im not quiet understand. and where is upgrade.php file in two links posted on start of this topic?!

You don't need to run upgrade.php if you're on 1.0.7. The upgrade.php file is included in the "update" and "upgrade" packages that are available on the downloads page.
