Title: Opinions needed on designing a set of polls.
Post by: Ken. on August 22, 2006, 09:55:26 AM
My forum currently has a contest running that will have three groups of contestants, divided according to their grade level in school.
So, even though its one contest, there will actually be three polls.
The forum membership will vote to select 1st, 2nd & 3rd place from the contestants in each of the three groups.

This raises two issues for me: first, how to best setup the votes themselves, and second, the simplest way to run the polls. (many of my members have never seen a poll before.)

The question that I am working on for poll design is this;
Because of the low numbers of potential voters, would it work better to let the voting membership have 1 vote, or three? ... as in the scenarios below:
Scenario #1: A member would be allowed only one vote in each of the three polls.
Scenario #2: A member would be allowed three votes in each of the three polls.

With both scenarios I foresee problems  if my vote counts are low and this may very well be the case because at this early point in the forums life the member count is very low (20) and while I expect the numbers to increase for the contest, about the most I'm counting on is maybe 40-50, but likely the total count will be 35 or less by the time the contest closes in three weeks. (based on what I'm hearing so far)

So, the question... Would you go with scenario #1 or #2, or is there some better way to do the vote?

And my other issue:
How to have all three polls displayed in one Topic/thread???
I have looked at poll setup questions and did numerous searches on how to have more than one poll in a single thread in lots of places, including here on SMF, Google and several other forums, but so far it is not looking as though it can be setup that way.

Am I just not looking in the right place? To me it just seems like it would be something that could be done... that way my three polls could be posted side-by-side at the top of one voting page/Topic! ;D

Thanks for any help and advice... Ken

Each thread can only have one poll. That is the default setup, at least.

You should decide the scenario based on your membership. What may work for some people may not work for others.

Thanks for the reply Motoko-chan.
On the more than one poll question, would it be something that should be asked for in the Mod Requests board? As I mentioned before it seems like something that could be done... but then I'm not a coder, so my opinion may be way off.
Thanks... Ken

You can go ask over there to see how possible it would be.
