My web host does not allow own php config. Will that be a problem?
Is there a way to work around this? I guess I could ask the webmaster to set everything as smf likes it, but what if that conflicts with other software?
You should be fine.
If you need to overide any php config srettings then this can be done using ini_set - however I doubt very much you will need anything changed in the default php.ini file ;)

SMF tends to keep up to date with latest releases of PHP etc. If other software writers don't keep up to date and their products become obsolete then that's an issue for them to deal with. We all have to try our best to keep up with progress :)
