I have done a search and can only find one topic dating back to 2005 which doesn't help me much :(
In-line images - I can't believe I'm the only one that needs this function. Attachments are fine but the nature of the site needs members to be able to easily upload images and post them "in line" with text.
We've currently got Coppermine "integrated" but it appears to me that all this means is that it shares a common user database with SMF and members still have to upload their images, get the URL and use it within a post. That's ok but we have many non-techie users for whom this is a real pain.
Is anyone aware of a more elegant in-line images solution out there for SMF? I'm getting fed up with members saying "this forum can do it, why can't you" - I guess they're referring to phpBB boards or something ....
Many thanks
Nigel
Are you talking

about doing

this?
Are you talking [img]http://pictures.kazebeer.com/linkdir/kegobeer2.jpg[/img] about doing
[img]http://pictures.kazebeer.com/linkdir/kegobeer2.jpg[/img] this?
I think he talks about attachments like vbulletin does (eg. http://www.gibberishtalk.com/showthread.php?t=249 )
In general I think the attachment module of SMF needs some work...
I visited the link you provided, but I don't see any inline images. Just a box called Attached Thumbnails. Based on that link, I think SMF's attachments are better. For instance, SMF resizes the image and doesn't need to open up a new window when you click on the thumbnail.
I don't think is better, because when you click the image you have to download the attachment instead of viewing it in the browser, plus there is no thumbnail in SMF.
I allways wanted to code a modification for that, but haven't find the time yet....
I see you aren't very familiar with SMF and user settings. For instance, guests viewing this forum see no attachments at all. Members, depending on rank, either see a link for an attachment or a thumbnail with the neat "open in the same page" option.
Just one more reason why SMF is better than vBulletin.
Actually, in RC2 you either see the attachment or don't see it. However, if you are allowed to see the attachment you'll see the thumbnail. If you aren't seeing a thumbnail on an RC2 board, there's something amiss.
I guess those feautures are in the 1.1 version. The "Display image attachments as pictures under post" feauture that you propably are reffering to, is not good because if someone posts a big image it break the layout.
BTW I can't say that SMF is better than vbulletin (I own sites with both softwares), but I am sure it will be in the future. At least it is the most promissing software for the future.
SMF is just the best for free, and the best for programmers as it is very easy to get modified.
The version was never specified, so I guessed the original poster was talking about 1.1. The 1.0.x line handles attachments differently.
So, back to in-line images ;)
Yes, I mean using the <img> tags but, the issue is that the user 1) needs somewhere to store his/her images and 2) needs to go fetch the URL and enclose it between the tags. This is no problem at all for us folk who understand these things but, for a non technical user it can be a nightmare - apparently.
I guess the ideal scenario would be somehow allowing attachments in-line ....rather than at the bottom of a post. I thought someone must have come up with a mod for this or some other easy in-line image solution for SMF?
To get an idea of what we need and why it's important to us, take a look at this thread ...
Here (http://www.rcmf.co.uk/4um/index.php/topic,28508.0.html)
This was done by someone who knows how to upload images, use img tags and find the URL to put in them...but others are not so able I'm afraid.
Exactly what should I look for in that thread?
I don't think inline attachments are being considered for any future version. Have you thought about posting a "how-to" about using inline images?
