Otsikko: Why are there 2 versions of SMF?
Kirjoitti: toasty2 - syyskuu 04, 2006, 12:27:45 AP
Why is there the 1.0.x series and 1.1 series? I don't understand why this is necessary. What's the major differences? Why not just have the next update send users on one series to the other and have all people running the same versions?

1.0.x is production version.

1.1 RC3 is a development version Release Candidate, as can be seen by the RC

So, which version is recommended? I recently converted my forum from 1.0.8 to 1.1RC3, should I have done that?

1.0.8 is classed as stable and therefore recommended.

1.1 is pretty stable and many sites run this version although you might want to wait until 1.1 final is released.

It's simple science...

the 1.0.X series is the offical version.

1.1 series is currently a test version.

Most people are using the test version though, as it seems to be pretty stable, but not as stable as the 1.0.X series.

From my experience, go with 1.1. The admin control panel is much clearer, and it has more features. It's generally faster also. I don't think the fulltext search with 1.1 is all that great, although in general 1.1 is better than 1.0.x.

I asked this in another post but it disappeared for some reason, I"m not exactly sure why.

What are the primary differences under the hoods of 1.1 and 1.0.x? i know for instance that 1.1 has a function called createBoard() that 1.0.x doesn't have.

Also will index templates carry over from 1.0.x to 1.1 or does 1.1 use a diffrent index template which will have to be re-modified to make changes that were made in 1.0.x?

Thank you.

That should outline whats different between 1.0.x and 1.1

1.0 is the entirely stable version and is recommended. But if you are comfortable with running a release candidate on your site, then go ahead and use 1.1 RC3, if not, wait until 1.1 Final is released and use 1.0.8 until then.

I have already reveiwed the documenttation it lacks specific information on what i asked about. I was hoping somone could clarify or point me towards more information on what major changes have been made to the code between the two vertions, specificly any functions which have been added, and information on any changes which might have occured in the index template that would prevent a 1.0.x index template from being directly ported.

If you want to know exactly what has been changed, read the changelog :)

I'm not sure if it's availiable seperately.. you can download 1.1 RC3 easily enough though.

Is 1.1 RC2 available to download anywhere? New to SMF I've been playing with RC3 (which looks great) but am having a lot of issues getting some other modules working (in particular TinyPortal, which doesn't seem to play with RC3 at all). Also, any huge issues moving back a system from RC3 to RC2?

Cheers.

http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?archive

For all previous releases.

And to my knowledge no backconverting is available for RC's.

TinyPortal public release doesn't work with RC3 YET. 0.9.x series does and is in closed testing.
Bloc will get it out in the open soon enough.

You'd be best to use 1.1RC2 with the security patches, untill the 1.1RC3 compatible version of Tinyportal is out.
