Otsikko: What are the "proper protocols" when trying to find solutions to questions???
Kirjoitti: pmhoran - syyskuu 28, 2006, 02:59:09 IP
I "thought" I was following proper protocols ... but suddenly 2 of my threads have been locked on me.

One at ...
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=116682

Which, since the question was about RC3 and the possibility that a line(s) had been changed or deleted in its load.php file was affecting my ability to use a specific mod ... I felt that was the "proper forum" to have that discussed.

"kegobeer" is obviously a very hard working & industrious person who I know has helped MANY in these forums find resolutions to their problems. And I am one who very much appreciates his efforts. But these sudden locked topics when I am only seeking information & hopefully answers is confusing to me.

It was suggested I make a post in the topic for that mod. Well, I did ... without any resolutions in the month since I posted it. Except in a few recent posts which were leading me to believe the problems with the mod NOT working is due to a line or lines in RC3. Hence my post in SMF Support.

Then another topic was locked at ...
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=114178

Which I started on another forum .... which again I was told was the appropriate forum for it ... was locked. That one was started a couple weeks ago ... and I admit was the product of a growing frustration from not getting anywhere with my other efforts. No one bothered to respond to the post except one guy asking which mod I was having a problem with. When I named it and posted a link to the other two threads ... BANG ... its locked. This time with no explanation ...

So ... right or wrong ... what I have learned from this experience ....

Don't get me wrong. I love SMF ... it is definitely the best forum software I have tried. And believe me ... I have tried a lot of different ones.

Plus ... I really appreciate the efforts made by the "SMF Team" in these forums in helping to resolve so many problems in a very patient & professional way ... and with continually updating & upgrading the software.

As well I admire the efforts of the mod & theme developers who not only create & freely share their "creations" ... but keep them updated & current as SMF is upgraded.

But dag nab it ... I do find myself getting VERY frustrated with an extremely small percentage of the "mod developers" ... since RC3 was released at least.

I am just trying to find answers ... any where I can potentially find them ... so my own membership will have back what they had before the RC3 update. If it hadn't been labeled a "Security Update" ... I never would have updated in the first place. Or if I had ... I would be asking how I could "back peddle" long before now.

So ... if I "broke protocol" then ... Sorry. My only excuse ... desperation to find answers. But ... when topics are locked suddenly ... shouldn't they also come with a reason why??? I just found the way these were done was somewhat .... antagonistic.

It is pretty hard for the support team to handle mods developed by others if they haven't used them. The best place for advice is the mods topic.

General Support is supposed to be support just for the SMF software and not for support for mods or custom themes, or help with php coding otherwise it would be very hard for the team to keep up with support questions.

I know it's where people first think to post maybe some warning should be put up such as not a place for mod support.

As mentioned ... thats where I have been TRYING to get support or an update for the mod.

Maybe instead of posting a link to where it was being discussed ... I should have just asked if ... in RC3's load.php file ... if all or part of the line(s)

<search position="before"><![CDATA[
 $GLOBALS['sc'] = &$_SESSION['rand_code'];]]></search>

had been changed to

$sc = $_SESSION['rand_code'];

If so ... can the RC3 load.php file be safely modified to what it was before without causing a probleim in SMF.

That was what I was trying to get the answer to in the first place. But I guess before someone would realize that they would have had to actually use the link provided to read the other posts. My own fault for assuming someone might expend the extra energy. But given how many others have posted new requests for help ... I shouldn't really be upset with anyone but myself.

Firstly, I don't see a reason why your second topic is locked. It may be on purpose, or Kegobeer may thought it was the first topic and locked it accidentaly. Because always a last post is posted about why the threat is locked.

For your installation issue that you've asked in blue at the last post... It should work!

And SMF will always give support. If you had problems with a few topic, still feel free to ask a new question! :)

Sverre finally got me to comprehend what he had actually tried to tell me before. Blame it on my brain not working right ... or on middle age ... or that I am just an idiot ... any would apply or maybe all.

But anyway ... change was made to the mods xml file ... and it installed and is working GREAT. I immediately started getting thank you's from my membership to any & all who helped me. So I gratefully pass those on.

This post ... as well as the other a couple weeks ago were "born" out of frustration.

All is right with the world again ...
