Title: Webinstall - A new way to get SMF!
Post by: Thantos on November 29, 2006, 07:45:07 AM
Simple Machines is proud to announce Webinstall, a new way to download the installation and upgrade packages.

Webinstall is a small PHP script that you upload to your server at the location you want the forum’s root directory to be.  Then you simply point your browser to the Webinstall file and follow the directions.

After you’ve selected the version of SMF and any languages you would like installed, the Webinstall script will download the files from our server and uncompress them.  It will then turn control over to the install script.

Upgrading is also possible with the Webinstall script.  Simply upload the file to the same location as Settings.php and point your browser to the Webinstall file, and proceed as normal.  You may also select additional languages to install while upgrading.  As always we'd like to remind you to always backup your files and data before upgrading.

It is recommended that you have Javascript enabled while running the Webinstall script; so that you may simply select the files you want and then walk away while it downloads and uncompresses the files.

Some servers do not allow you to execute scripts with a file permission of 777.  If you are on one of these servers you can override the default file permission by filling in the desired file setting (in numeric form) in the field below the language choices.

If you encounter a 500 error code when the Webinstall script switches to the upgrade or install script, then you are most likely on a server that doesn't allow a file permission of 777.  You should either manually change the file permissions or you can run the Webinstall script again and override the file permission.

Download Webinstall (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php/webinstall.php)

Thanks,
Simple Machines

n33t.

Only problem is that when I'm upgrading my forum I run "Beyond Compare 2" (file comparison software) on the old & new directories, to make all the custom little changes I made again.. And this, I believe, will force overwriting the files with the default original ones..

You should package your custom changes as a mod, so then you can apply them again easily :)

So this confirms that next SMF is chicken feet. Too bad it can't be downloaded with out team access :). Or maybe it's trap!

I believe that it would be easy to make program that makes mod files automatically.
Run diff -> parse -> write to mod file basically. And it will make faster updates so you gain then. (easy if you are coder)

Admin edit:  Please don't spoil the suprise for others.

Edit: Then happy easter egg hunting... :)

There's still the bug with the checkbox for the "I have read the license and agree to be bound by it." not checked and still installing the software.
But I guess the developers consider it a minor issue, since I reported it one week ago in the charter area, yet they are releasing this tool with the security/legal (I'm not sure how to call it) hole in it.

So, anyone wants to know how to install the forum and not be bound by the agreement?  >:(
Title: Re: Webinstall - A new way to get SMF!
Post by: Thantos on November 30, 2006, 03:59:19 PM
Actually I had just forgotten about that.  It was a lesser issue compared to the other bugs.

And to be fair you reported it on Nov 28th, considerng that today is only the 30th, I think a week is a little overblown.

But it matters not.  Lecture is boring so I fixed it.  The weird thing is that it shouldn't have happeed anyways, and when I started putting debug output code in, it worked properly.  /shrug

Every time I get a Internal Server error, forcing me to start over. Usually I get this on step 3, substep 11 or 16.

I'm hosting on Freehostia, could that be the thing? When I upload it 'manually' it doesn't give this error.
Title: Re: Webinstall - A new way to get SMF!
Post by: Thantos on December 02, 2006, 11:35:52 AM
You may need to check your chmod settings if you are getting a 500 error.  I'm not familiar with Freehostia to know if they apply and restrictions on it.

You should just need to upload it and point it in your web browser and follow the steps and be finished :)

@Devs.

I am testing this out on one of my test sites. I see this option:
Use the update package:       Yes Whats the differences between the update and upgrade package? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=896.0)

I click the link and get a off limits error.. Should fix that..

im using dreamhost

initial running of the webinstall seemed to be fine however when it finished it took me to the folder I had specified

and all it contained were the Themes folder and inside were the themes babylon clasic and default and thats all

I ran it again - same results

any idea why?

PS: folder permissions were at 777 and everything is set as stated in 1st post - all details double checked but it only extracts the themes folder (i tried a 3rd time)

I received an odd error messsage as the forum was upgrading:

Upgrading...
Updating ban system... Unsuccessful!

This query:
SELECT mem.ID_MEMBER, mem.is_activated + 10 AS new_value
FROM (smf_ban_groups AS bg, smf_ban_items AS bi, smf_members AS mem)
WHERE bg.ID_BAN_GROUP = bi.ID_BAN_GROUP
AND bg.cannot_access = 1
AND (bg.expire_time IS NULL OR bg.expire_time > 1165079936)
AND (mem.ID_MEMBER = bi.ID_MEMBER OR mem.emailAddress LIKE bi.email_address)
AND mem.is_activated < 10;

Caused the error:
Table 'billsbur_smf1.smf_ban_groups' doesn't exist

I have not banned anyone that I can think of, is that causing this?
Title: Re: Webinstall - A new way to get SMF!
Post by: Thantos on December 02, 2006, 12:27:11 PM
Just as a note, the upgrading part isn't actually part of the webinstall.

From the error it looks like the table smf_ban_groups didn't get created.  Can you try running upgrade.php again and see if the table gets created.

the only folder that contained anything was the default folder - and that only contained images and nothing else - no php files or otherwise created except images in default theme folder

PS: i doing a full package install right now via FTP but ill keep an eye on the webinstaller

The file that you get from the download page is using the correct URL which goes to an available page.  Perhaps firefox is caching the file instead of downloading a new one.

Odd this is not working on Site 5 hosting, I have tried a plethora of different  CH Mod settings, when I go to the step where it downloads the files it brings me to a download page for the webinstall.php file.

I tried setting up Webinstall and can't get past the ftp connect step:
Unable to connect to FTP server with this combination of details.

All Access is LOGGED

I used ftp.greatlakesbass.com as my server with port 21.

I used the same username and password I always do when I ftp files to my web site. I tried the default setting in the mod 0664 and tried 755, but still don't get past this step.

The installed path was automatically detected as /forum which it is /www/forum.

Am I missing something obvious or do I have an external issue? Thanks.

Webinstall expects a 200 response which means things are ok.  It appears that your server is giving another reponse prior to the 200 response.

That does not surprise me. I will have to look into it with Omnis.com later since I don't know enough about those kinds of things. Don't know if they could or would change it. I'll upgrade the 'old-fashioned' way. Thanks for the responses.

Thantos, I have seen similar things when I try to use smf's ftp thing on my mac. It says the same thing but instead of All Access is LOGGED its Welcome to Darwin.
If I could give your a verbose output of what smf gets when it tries to ftp my mac I would..
Think SMF needs a way to identify server messages

Problems here also. I had to upgrade manually, because once i ran webinstall.php and submitted the languages and what package to install, i just went to a blank page (with the SMF logo at the top).
The php error log simply told me that memory was exhausted.. and that's something that most people will have problems with, I'd have thought.

Error was this:

PHP Fatal error:  Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 5785601 bytes) in /path_to_forum/forum/webinstall.php on line 744

If you select additional languages it won't install main package. So run again without additional languages selected.

To everyone with a copyright notice: the webinstall upgrade process did not work for you.  If you have mods installed or you are not currently running RC3, use the large upgrade package and upgrade manually.  If you are running RC3 with no mods, use the small update package.

DO NOT POST SUPPORT REQUESTS IN THIS ANNOUNCEMENT THREAD.

I'am new to smf. But just download webinstall.php to do the update of my smf 1.1 rc1 live update.
Everything go well. But just some minor issues is that if I have go installed more than one language pack.
It just install the last one. E.g. If I choose s.chinese, t.chinese and japanese. Then, it only got the japanese installed.
This works with default: 644 settings.

This is my upgrade log:
http://www.enekz.frih.net/images/upgrade.php.htm

It is a great job.
Thanks very much.

tried to upgrade from 1.1rc3 to 1.1, but couldn't... :(
script said that it had downloaded files, extracted them and than just redirected me to the board list, version still 1.1rc3
no error messages or anything

The same happened to me, so I tried again without selecting any of the languages and the upgrade worked correctly. When I selected all the English sets, the upgrade kept exiting to the forum without the updates.

Same error here.
I pushed continue button and then I am redirected to the forum as nothing happened. The upgrade.php do not exists in my smf root.
I selected the english_british and the spanish_es languages first.
I tryed again with the spanish_es only too, but nothing.
Then I tryed without languages packages and ok. Upgrade.php begin working with "old language packages" errors. I put manually the upgrade.php?step=1 and now works.

I have upgrade to SMF1.1.

Hey should I delete webinstall.php from my server after upgrading?

My install was successful.

Thanks

For those that are having some problems:  I added a check in to make sure that a file was writeable before it actually tries to do a write.  Hopefully this will alert you to any problems.

And yes drdave, if the install or upgrade script didn't delete webinstall.php you should remove it.

I used Webinstall, and everything worked great, or so I thought.  I have admin acess everywhere, except in the package manager and gallery.  when I click on package manager, all I get is blank white screen.  and the Gallery button is gone.  Does anyone have any clues?

You should package your custom changes as a mod, so then you can apply them again easily :)

How can we do this?  Or where can we find out more information about doing this?

Thanks

After using webinstall to update from RC3 I get the copyright error.

What file is it exactly that I need to edit to add the copyright notice? I didn't delete anything, just ran the webinstall...

@Tarke, than, and caero: Download webinstall from the download page and try again.  If it still doesn't work, either start a new thread or post in an existing thread in the Install and Upgrade support board.  You can also download the large upgrade package and do a manual upgrade.

When I run the webinstall.php it shows me this message :

Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: data error in D:\servidor\web\mPhpPeru\webinstall.php on line 1074

The installer was unable to download the archive (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php/smf_1-1_update.tar.gz) from the server. Please try using the regular installer package instead.

Click here to try this step again.

What do I have to do?

@glcis: Download webinstall from the download page and try again.  If you continue to get this error, use the manual upgrade method.  Visit the download page and download the large upgrade package, upload the files and run the upgrade script.

It should be giving you a reason why it couldn't connect.  Can you please copy and paste it here.

Unable to connect to FTP server with this combination of details.

This is the only message it gives.  But I know my log in details are correct as I can log in via an ftp program.  The file permission I was using is 0664.

Just a quick note.

For mac users it's best to use webinstall.php with Firefox. Safari seems to have problems with the file.

Well done guys, it's a great piece of work. A fantastic example of making something easy to use. My board also seems to run faster as well since the upgrade.  :)

This is what I get too.
I tried all the possible cobinations for relative path.
Nothing worked.
I have an absolute path like this:
/home/content/u/s/e/username/html/forum
Webinstall.php automatically put "content" to the username box and "/u/s/e/username/html/forum" to the relative path box.
Of course I deleted since its wrong.

I entered my right FTP user and FTP pass. Then tried all combinations for the path like:
/home/content/u/s/e/username/html/forum
/content/u/s/e/username/html/forum
/u/s/e/username/html/forum
/username/html/forum
/html/forum
/forum

I also tried changing FTP server to ftp.domain.com with all these combos.
I also tried with and without starting/trailing slashes in the path.

All I got is the same error..

Elmacik, try checking the FTP server name. There would (likely) be a different error message if there was a problem in one of the other fields.

Motoko-chan, for the server name I tried these:
localhost
ftp.domain.com
ftp://localhost
ftp://ftp.domain.com

The same result.
In my opinion there is something wrong with the relativity of the path.
I think webinstall.php should use abaolute paths rather than relative ones.

If it can't connect, then the path doesn't matter. It is possible that the host has restricted the use of FTP from their server.

I can also connect to FTP by active scripts. SMF can also connect to FTP when needed while setting up.

Title: Re: Webinstall - A new way to get SMF!

dacminhm, you don't leave the webinstall online after you're done, you delete it. Just like before with files like upgrade.php and stuff. So unless the hackers use those few minutes where you're updating the software, they won't have a chance to use webinstall against you.

I like the thing, it's a great idea! Good work!

It works in local installations, but you'll still need to be connected to the internet, as the script connect to the SMF server to download the files.

Just did an upgrade from 1.0.8 to 1.1 - completed without errors.

my first post, telling everyone that I've upgraded the forum gave this error...

QuoteUnknown column 'mem.notifySendBody' in 'field list'
File: /home/windandwheuk/public_html/wawf/Sources/Post.php
Line: 1922

When I checked, the p0st has been made... What do I need to do?

(edit V#)

Ooops! Admin can you move this post please - I did not use Webinstall, but a manual upload.

Update....

Clicking a users name gives

QuoteUnknown column 'mem.notifySendBody' in 'field list'
File: /home/windandwheuk/public_html/wawf/Sources/Load.php
Line: 888

@all - Please don't use this thread as a support function.  This is an announcement thread.  Review the many current webinstall threads in the Install and Upgrade board, and only create a new thread if your situation hasn't already been addressed.

Thank you.
