! Typo (xmb_to_smf.sql)
! Set the correct subject for posts without a subject. (xmb_to_smf.sql)

used XMB Nexus 1.9.6 RC2

The reason for "Converting posts... Successful" not being there is because it's gone on the page reload.  Did everything convert correctly though?

I can send mysqldump of forum`s databases xmb & smf
to your E-mail

Alright.  I'll look at it tom and see what's wrong.

finded bugs
- converted only one moderator (not all moderators) of one forum
- cracked structure of forums and categories (all forums moved to General Category)

mysqldumps is sended on your e-mail (used mysql 3.23 & CP1251)

I recently tried to convert from XMB to SMF, I run the converter and it loads for  about 10 min then i get a blank white page and the message "done" in the status bar, when i go to my installation of SMF it has succesfully copied over the usernames and passwords, created 1 of 8 boards, but not copied any of the posts over,  I have tried a couple times and everytime it seems to only copy the same amount of data

the board i am copying has about 150 000 posts and about 7000 users if that effects anything

In one folder I have xmb. In another I have fresh install of smf. I have taken the file from this topic and copied it into smf folder and convert.php from download section of this site. Than I have gone to: http://mysite/smf/convert.php and I have received this error.

Yes, now i re-converted with the upgraded file as well as the .sql file but i'm still having issues with it.  It'll convert the members but not the posts nor the topics.  I keep getting this error "Converting members... Successful.

not that i know of.  i have more posts and threads then members.  Im not sure of the exact size.

Look at the url and see if &substep=## increases.

well i didn't see a start number but when it came to the page of letting me know that the converting of threads was incomplete it left off at substep=7&start=1000 the first time it was at 700

I was able to convert zamorc's forum w/o a problem.  He has a big board too.  So it should be working on yours.  If you PM me FTP info I can look into it.

hey, its me again it looks like my post got lost in all the chaos, iv been trying to convert a forum for the last month or so but everyimte i try and convert it, it thinks for a while then display a blank page with step=1 in the URL, when i open up the forums after, the converter has succesful converted all the users but has not converted anything else

any ideas on what he problem could be?

well i figured out what that problem was... the converter was overloading the server when it tried to convert our quarter million private messages. So i cleared out all the user's private messages and tried again, this time i got this error:

themortalgod the query might need to be optimized a bit for PM's I'll look into that.  About the log_notify dup key it should be ignoring duplicates.

While converting Kelly's board I came across a few bugs that I fixed.  I updated the converter in the first post.

For my board - 35 users, 13,000 posts:

I run the converter, everything goes fine except for one major problem we're having.

It seems to trim down all of the posts that are above a certain length.

Any ideas?

XMB - 1.9.7 is last version

I am having a major issue with the convert.php function.  We did a "test" forum a few months ago and it worked fine.  However, this weekend we went to convert the actual forum we want to convert from XMB to SMF... and ran into problems.

We copied the database to a "convert" database.  We have a "test" forum that we keep up (for experimental things)... and we set up this XMB "test" forum to use the "convert" database.

We then tried to convert that database to SMF.  When we did this... it seemed to be working... however it never finished.  The page never even changed from the one where I input the information for the forums and the password.  When we go back to look at the database... our phpMyAdmin is locked up.  We also can not delete the "convert" database to try to start over... it to is locked up.

This is causing major issues and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I kind of gave up on it.

I am having trouble with the converter.  I am converting a XMB 1.9.6 rc2 to SMF 1.1.3.  I go to the convert.php, and change the path for the XMB to "/home/mysite/public_html/forums" and put in the password for the database.

I hit enter and the page just grinds for a while, changes the address to http://www.ambushsite.com/convert.php?step=1 and I get the following error: "The request timed out before the page could be retrieved."

I went into myPHPAdmin and can see that the users, categories, and boards were imported, but the only message I see out there is the default message from SMF.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Did you try to refresh and see if it continued?
It seems like apache is timing out and the script isn't able to stop it in time.

Yes, I did.  I can go into the mySQL and see that it only went so far before it died.

Are there particular instructions on how to do this locally?  It sounds like that might work better.

Update:  I went home and ran the convert.php on the site from there.  Apparently the timeout must be on the proxy server because it ran and did the conversion.  It apparently also over loaded the SQL server because it restarted 4x during the conversion process.  Oops. :D

3. Uploaded the existing convert.php and the new xmb_to_smf.sql file to my SMF folder on the server and re-ran the convert.php (after logging in of course)

That fixed it! Now the forum categories have the correct names, and the existing posts have the full original non-truncated text.

I know this was probably a "dummy" post, but it just might help someone who is going through the same frustration that I did.

I overwrited files, worked ok until it comes to smileys. Now i have problems with smileys. I don't even want to convert those.
Is there a way to skip smileys conversion?
Also, procesing my database keeps long time, is there a way to continue conversion at some point if something goes wrong?
My XMB database is in latin1, but i have mixed data in it that is utf8(cyrilic) and latin1. What i need to do if I want to keep all those cyrilic data(posts, signatures, etc) in the right way?

No matter what I do. This converter is not working. I have been at this for two weeks now. I've been on here and I've uploaded the latest fixes and convert.php for this forum and nothing is working correctly.

I've noticed that none of the code changes I made in the convert.php for that specific issue work either. Yes, I replaced that line of coding and yes it was overwritten. I ran convert.php and everything the database users are all hooked up and this is not working at all. Getting a bit frustrated. May just have to give up and stick with XMB if I can't get this converted correctly very soon here. Not sure what is going on. I've done just about everything. I will not delete and re-install the SMF forum again because that is getting frustrating.

I have the EXACT same thing happening with me.  Trying to convert from XMB 1.9.8 to SMF... and I get the same error.  I am pretty good experienced at creating databases and users.  SMF has access to the XMB database.

Using the converter is quite easy also... all the information is correct.

Do you have phpMyAdmin to see what queries it is running? It just might be it is able to bypass the apache timeout and is trying to do it all in one shot.

I have phpMyAdmin... but not quite sure how to get into all that.

Yea thats almost a large forum (only a few posts off 500k).
You might have to do this via command line or by section.

Apache is like a middle man, You have to talk to it, and it talks to php (who is also talking to mysql), and then it has to respond to Apache to respond to you.
By doing command line you remove the middle man and without that middle man the timeout is less of an issue.

command line can be used by using ssh to the server and just doing
"php -f /path/to/convert.php"

It will tell you about missing parameters. Those will need to be specified for the conversion.

i know nothing about SSH

i tried connecting using SSH... but for some reason it's not connecting. i will try it again tomorrow at work.  i know i've used it a few times there with the forums.  but only for backing up and restoring a database... anything else SSH related i know nothing about.

Not to be mean, but if you got a large site as yours is and will continue to be, you should get to know a little about such stuff. A GUI isn't always the best way to administer things when you got resources you need to dedicate towards other things such as apache, mysql, or php.

Good luck trying though, its a little hard to get used to a first, but once you play with it enough it will get easy. I personally use it all the time between my macs to do even the simplist things such as making a directory/folder on it to as complicated as running software updates (I am a bit lazy, so walking down stairs to perform updates takes more energy than it would to easily do it via remote desktop or ssh).

You can try to open the .sql file
Find:
---* {$to_prefix}members

Replace:
---* {$to_prefix}members 200

This will reduce it to only converting 200 members at once instead of the default (I think its 500 or 1,000).

It seems to be working now, but it is most likely your host doing something or thinking it is a ddos attack from the size and amount of queries in a short amount of time.

all the other websites on that VPS worked.  so i don't think it was the host.

i had to reboot the VPS to get it to come back.

If you use ssh just type "top" and it should show you.

Right now, I can't get it to unlock the tables (I tried to kill all the query processes it was running but that didn't help).
I can't honestly see what would be causing that to lock up.

Do you mind if I tried it locally on my own machine with a copy of your database?
I would have more range here to play and if I lock something up it doesn't hurt me locally to quit the applications themselves such as mysqld :P

Sure.  Do what you need to do.  I really like SMF and want to switch.  So I am really hoping we can figure this out.

Also... please keep in mind that this is just a "TEST" database and forums.  The real active forum is not being touched by the convert process yet.  Once we figure out what's going on and I do a few tests to make sure everything went smooth... we can convert the real forums!!!

why we can convert other forum to SMF. is all forum had the same structure

I had time today. I only changed a few things in the converter and it finally made it past the topics part :)

It did die out in the end due to this error:

You can see there it is just a variable in MySQL that needs to be set to allow this (see the second post for the offered solution but you should use a higher value most likely).

Now to tell  you. I started this about 5 pm and it took until 8:30 pm to finish converting posts.
Well you have way more personal message data than you do posts data. So this section might even take longer :|

Sadly there isn't much that can be done. With a 500k board and converting about 500 posts at a time (so as to not harm the server from a super large query). This is something that might take a while.

But for the most part the convert.php and xmb_to_smf.sql that are in your SMF folder are the ones I used..

btw, this is the string I used in ssh:
First:

cd public_html/smf


Then:

php convert.php --path_to=/home/xxxx/public_html/smf --path_from=/home/xxxx/public_html/test --db_pass=xxxx --convert_script=xmb_to_smf.sql --debug

I took out all sensitive data. The debug part isn't needed at the end. But I had it incase it would tell me anything extra. It didn't really. Debug mode doesn't do much more than normal mode at the moment.. I plan on getting that fixed :P

So the private messages are what is locking up the convert? Those can be deleted.

No there where not locking up the conversion.
I changed the topics query slightly (from what I posted above) and was able to finally get it to work.

The PMs though are very large it looks like. I don't know how long it would take you to convert them. If you don't need them, then emptying the xmb_u2u table would delete all pms (which totals about 700 mib of data from what I seen in your phpmyadmin).

You should though be planning on this taking some time. If you have a couple days off work, doing it at night when things are quiet and the forum can be offline for a couple of hours while you convert (so that way no new data is inserted during the conversion) would be the best way to go.

So no code in the files need to change?  You only got it to work on your local machine.  Did you try it on the actual server or you can't because of the packet size?

I guess what I am trying to say is... what's the next step I need to take?

That was on your site I got the error. I didn't even take it local. I seen why I think what was causing it. Just letting it sit for a day for the tables to properly unlock and such is what helped finally test it though :)

So I could just delete all the PMs... and run it through SSH??

In PHP you need to pass the -- option to pass arguments to the php script itself.  So this should work.

Why would I be able to see the members that converted... but not the Boards or Topics?  Posts are currently still converting.  I also deleted all the PMs so that way that shouldn't take no time.

The cleanup at the end has not occurred yet. So that may be why

It could be possible as well that permissions are in effect and you would need to login to see them.

I am logged in.  They don't show up in the admin center either.  Just thought it was weird that I could see the members list and it have all of them... and not be able to see any of the boards.

You need to wait for the whole process to complete.

If you want you can check the data in the database.  You can see what has been converted there.  Like boards and categories and you can see the total rows updating for the messages table as well.

Just use the same files that you had there during the demo conversion. They are the ones you need.

Hi I'm new to SMF and I have a bit of a problem. It said it converted except for posts. I clicked the continue button and now I have gotten this error.

It's not letting me put it as a code. It's bascially what a few others had here. A bunch of numbers and then it says Caused the error:

Duplicate entry '511' for key 1

What was the error before you clicked continue?

Sometimes clicking continue will cause errors and cause a double submission of the form (I need to look into fixing that).

Well the boards, topics, and posts didn't convert. I tried again right now and it said the following.

I just tried the converter again, I got this. It said it coverted the members when I didn't even select that cause they converted already. Same with the categories.

Is there any danger in re-running the conversion process? I ran it once prior to doing some work on an install of SMF, as I'm moving over to SMF from XMB, but now I've done all this backend work, I don't want to loose any of the changes I've made to the SMF installation by re-installing it. However, I can loose all the posting, topic and membership content as it's only for demo.

usually there is no risk. open the xmb_to_smf.sql with a text-editor and search for "TRUNCATE", whenever you find a TRUNCATE the related table will be cleaned  by the new conversion process.

If you don't like a risk in any way make a backup from your SMF database before you re-convert your XMB.

Hi! Im not 100% sure if this is the right thread, but I've followed the link on the fixed thread.

I've downloaded the converter available on the download page and used it to convert an xmb board version 1.9.11 to SMF 1.1.11. The convertion worked and everything is fine expect for 2 issues:

1 [minor]: xmb 1.9.11 generates a thumbnail for the pictures attached to a post and insert them into [file]##[/file], where ## is the attachment number (i.e. 42). Since SMF does not have a default [file] bbCode what happens is that we don't see the thumbnail, only a plain text with

[file]42[/file].

However, the files are attached to the bottom of the post, making this a less important issue.

2. [major]: xmb 1.9.11 uses the bbCode [rquote] as its default tag, instead of [\quote\]  ( \ just for escaping) for quoting users. This drives to a problem where we don't see any quotation block, only a plain text with

[rquote=1111&tid=54&author="UserName"] Text quoted [/rquote].


Im not skilful enough with PHP to code something to do this task. I guess this not a simple task to do after inserting the data, so any help would be appreciated - even with editing the script, so it converts [rquote] to [\quote\] before inserting the data into the SMF db.

I was able to convert every [rquote] to [\quote] using string replace inside the SQL conversion file.

I think you have to contact your support. They will be more helpful than we, since you need more memory to your, since this is more concerned to local setup.

Hmmm... This message means your query tried to allocate 900k of memory, but more or less 1MB is already allocated. This is usually a server side problem:

You could have a look at your mysql's logs.

Thank you for the help, I actually figured out a way around it.  I found I have over 2gb of attachments on my forum, and it turns out that a group of about 500 are all bmp's at least 500kb in size, so it was going way over the 64m limit even though the error was different.  I alleviated this by changing the limit in the php file from 500 to 50 so it would process much less files at once.  It took much longer to convert the attachments, but ultimatey completed!

Looks like the conversion was successful all the way around, I had to rebuilt the thumbnail cache, but even U2U's migrated over!

1. Which version was your XMB forum?
2. Does it have the [file]##[/file] tags? If yes, have you been able to fully convert its content to a thumbnail?

My forum was XMB 1.9.10 Karl.  The actual reason I converted to SMF was I was unable to upgrade to 1.9.11, and unable to find a way around it without losing data.  Plus I was looking to integrate my Gallery2 and chat into a message board, of which I could not do with XMB.

My posts dig not have file tags, would I look anywhere else for them?

All the images converted over and displayed with paperclip icons.  I used the method elsewhere on this board to assign dimensions and generate thumbnails.  The only issue I had with conversion is many of the titles on my topics have been changed.

No where, I guess. What happened in my case was that a few posts had phots attached to them, which had a thumbnail automatically posted inside the [file] tag inside the post body.

I see! I've seen some plugins to generate thumbails, but Im not so sure if they come by default with SMF. So dar, Im thinking about using regex to change from [file] to something SMF understand, though I could change them by hand (only a few posts, 20 something, have images attached).

I will work some more over it and see how far I can get with my small SQL and PHP skills.

Hi all! I manage to make a simple python script to convert the XMB 1.9.11 link format to SMF 1.1.11.

The convertion works, however, the script has some problems:

We are about to move from xmb to smf and Im on the process of testing everythig And my script works on part.... it does change the quote form, but it does not build de link. If I look in the source, there is no <a http://localhost/index.php?topic=1111.msg1111#msg1111 > Quote from ... </a> .

Only "Quote from:username link=topic=111.msg=1111#msg11111 date=1111111"


Of course, 1 is just for ilustrating.  ;D

Nevertheless, how does SMF creates the links? How it brings the username, topic and msg ids and paste them into the href?

I looked into SMF code and I've found where it builds the ?topic=...  part. However, I still can't get how it parses the code. Because, as far as I understand, it should have guessed the ?topic=... part (from the [quote ... ] ), but it didn't.

I gave up of using an external tool for that, and decided to use the converter code. However, Im kind of lost on where to call a function there that would perform the search/replace task.

On the version we have installed (after 19.8) xmb quote is defined as written below:


[rquote=112233& tid=1234&author=John Doe] [/rquote]


so, there is no linking inside the quotes. The Python  scipt I made can change is, but there is no linking neither.


changing rquote to quote is way less harder. I think I even posted my modification here.

Updating!


With the Pyhton script I have made previously I was able to create the quote links. It was just that SMF needs the timestamp for the posts. And I missed it.  ;D

Now that I've added the date to the string used on the update clause, it corrects the links and everything works fine.  8)

Sorry for doing that on Python and not PHP, but since I believe the script will reach 97% of processig in PHP as well, I don't think it would be wise to run it on your ordinary production server - specially if you use shared hosting (my case).

The only 2 problems that remain are:

1. XMB posts attached files to the body of the post with a file BBcode - smf dont know how to deal with it and prints [\file]  id of the attachment [\/file]

2. XMB when mergin topics somehow change the topic ID to the most recent one (at least in our case), making Topic A be called Topic B after the merge. That causes 2 problems:

The topic link title and all its inner link titles are called Topic B.
If you rename Topic B to A, as it should be called, it will change only the link within the topic ist, not  inside Topic A.

the 2nd problem is that all the links on the post title, inside the thread, will have a wrong id.

As for 12/10 until today I managed to migrate from XMB 1.9.11(musebrasil.com/velho) to SMF 1.1.11 (musebrasil.com/forum ). The only remain problems are with merged topics, where the merged topic has now the ID from the other one (i.e. B merged with A and now A has B id) ,  making a little confusion with titles and subjects (inside the threads) - hence why I still have the old board on, so users can search their old topic and tell us which topic they are seeking. Nothing that a simple SQL update can't fix. Another problem is that pools has no items or votes, though I already know  how to add them through queries.

I can't remember now if there is another problem, but from 0 to 10, I'd say this migration was 9.0.  8)


- No message loss.
- No user account problems.
- No topic loss.
- No PM loss.

And my Python quick fix works!  8) (now I run it on the XMB before converting, not that make much different though).


There is another small query I run before converting that changes rquote to quote, but it is a simple string replace MySQL command, nothing that you can't do using the official MySQL documentarion.

Sorry for the late reply. I dont check this board that much. The way I did is kind of complicated if you cant deal with command line and some SQL code. I recommend trying to run XMB to phpBB converter and then phpBB to SMF.
