Title: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: JayBachatero on February 22, 2007, 12:15:14 PM
Software: vBulletin
Version: 3.6.x

This is the initial import for the vBulletin 3.6 converter.  There are some known issues at the moment.
Known Issues
- Permissions for boards are not converted.
- Membergorups are not converted.
- Avatars are not coppied over.

I'll be looking into fixing these issues soon.

Changelog
! initial import
! At times ID_PARENT was wrong for boards.

convert.php
Use this convert.php (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=140741.0) with the .sql file attached in this topic.

You put it in the same place as the convert.php file.

I want to know when you will be fixing those issues.

Please reply fast.

and second thing i want to know -

As its written in the converter instruction manual

(For best results, you should install SMF on the same database as the forum you're converting from. If this is not possible, you will need to make sure that the MySQL user account being used for SMF has access to the other forum's database)

But if i install it in the same database then i think it may create problems. hows that possible please explain.

Thanks

Please reply urgent.

You create a new table  prefix when you install smf. So your vbulliten will hopfully be a diffrent prefix and smf leave default as Smf_

Would you happen to know when the permission thing will be fixed? I converted a few days ago and something went wrong and the Admins couldn't see anything on the board, the worst part is it is impossible to my understanding to edit Admin Permissions.

Another thing like the person above stated, when I try to convert the smilies it always fails.Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

No. It dont work with vb 3.6.8 :(

Actually, it does! I got it to work! You just have to use "Find and repair any errors." under forum maintenance after the conversion. You will also have to reorganize and categorize your boards, but it seems like almost everything that should convert does convert! Even reputation converts to karma!

If you're getting "Select command denied to user" or something like that, then see the following topic...

/me is going to have to take a look at vB and update the converter.  I'm pretty sure the changes in 3.6.x are not so big since they are minor upgrades i.e. 3.6.1 to 3.6.2.  Big changes happen in 3.6 to 3.7.

Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of vBulletin 3.6. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error MySQL gave was: SELECT command denied to user 'ketenlik_alper'@'localhost' for table 'user'

what can i do for this

Will this have any effect on the VB Forums we are using? Currently, we are attempting to convert VB v3.6.7 to Simple Machines, and the VBulletin forums we use is quite big (300mb+) of database space. I'd like to know if there will be any downsides in converting such a large space.

Problems like, slow downs, removal of the VB database, timeouts, etc. I'd like to know because I don't want to mess up with the VB forums just yet.

I'm not sure if it's been addressed or fixed, but I converted from 3.6.4 back in November '07, and recently was made aware that the email privacy was set to public. Just a heads up. A simple SQL update query fixed the issue, though.

I did but it's not working. I laso tried several versions and still nothing... now I installed smf 1.1.4 then I'll make the conversion and if it's working I will upgrade it to 2.0 after all is ok.

I hope this way will work.

Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: XVanish on April 16, 2008, 02:40:00 AM
Well... first I tried on smf 2.0 to use the converter for vb 3.6.x but it wont start saying that it can't find the config for vb 3.6, atfer that I tried 3.5 and it was the same, last night I installed smf 1.1.4 and used the converter vb 3.6 to smf 1.1.4 or 1.1.2 and did not work eather because it couldn't find the path to the files but the convert.php and sql file were there... after that I started it manually (step1) and it said that the size of the sql file (if I remember correctly) is to big and that it's trying to rewrite some space but It did nothing... I have dedicated server, free space I have alot, unlimited trafic, etc etc so there is no problem with the server...

Now I installed from scratch smf 1.1.4 and now I'm waiting for one good converter from vb 3.6.7 to smf 1.1.4... then if it's working ok I will upgrade smf 1.1.4 to 2.0 and so I hope it will work...

How can you help me here? Ty!
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: XVanish on April 16, 2008, 05:41:15 AM
Ok, I installed a fresh smf 1.1.4, uploaded the convert.php + vbulletin36_to_smf.sql in my smf directory, started convert.php and i have again this error:

"Unable to find the settings for vBulletin 3.6. Please double check the path and try again."

The path is exactly the one where my files are: /home/xvanish/public_html/smf

What can I do in your opinion? I need one working solution.

Thank you!
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: XVanish on April 16, 2008, 09:07:36 AM
Nothing... forced converting with those files (convert.php?step=1) tells me alot of errors in multiple lines...

I really don't know what to do anymore :(

I saw that the php file is for version smf 1.1 and the sql file is for:

---~ name: "vBulletin 3.6"
/******************************************************************************/
---~ version: "SMF 1.1.2"

It's not attached the right .sql file or what?
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: SleePy on April 16, 2008, 12:52:57 PM
Make sure the paths are correct.
One path is to your SMF forum and the other path is to your vb forum. These should be two different paths.
You will also need to enter you SMF mysql password for security reasons.

The converters do not yet convert to SMF 2.0 either. If you want to convert and use SMF 2.0 you will first have to convert to 1.1 and then upgrade to 2.0. I am sure though that sometime after 2.0 Final is released that there will be converters for 2.0.
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: XVanish on April 16, 2008, 01:48:31 PM
I allready know about the fact that there are no convertors for smf 2.0 . I installed a fresh 1.1.4, Romanian language patch and I like it... the only problem that remains (I hope) is converting my db from vb 3.6.7 to the new smf.

Now, if I understand correctly what you wrote I think I found my mistake: at the path to my vb forum I  used the path to my db generated by my admin cpanel from my vb forum, this database I uploaded it to the server where I installed the new smf, in the same folder named temporarely "smf" and now I reallize that I must use the real path to my actual vb forum. If I'm correct there will be like this:

Path to SMF: /home/xvanish/public_html/smf  (smf is the folder where I installed the new smf 1.1.4) - here i upload convert.php + vbulletin36_to_smf.sql

Path to vBulletin 3.6: here I think is my mistake, please explain to me exactly how should the path be... untill now I used: /home/xvanish/public_html/smf/vb (in vb folder I uploaded my vb database)

Thank You!
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: SleePy on April 16, 2008, 10:56:48 PM
yes. It must be the actual path to vBulletin.
The converter script will read the vB configuration files to find out information like database information and other things (Sometimes).

so i converted from VB 3.7 to SMF 1.1.5.  I noticed a couple things happened.  I'm running TinyPortal and some things seemed to have gotten crosslinked.  For example... i had created an announcement on the main page which was linked to another user account after the conversion.  Also things seemed to get crosslinked in the garage module (which i understand is probably out of your control) but it looks like it took the few garage entries we had done and stuck other names on there....i seem to have most issues sorted out now.... just wondering if you know why these things happened?
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6

Most likely because we have not created a vB 3.7 converter yet.
So you are taking a risk to convert with the 3.6 converter.

Is there any update on when the following may be fixed in the converter

Known Issues
- Permissions for boards are not converted.
- Membergorups are not converted.

We have a site on VB and this is the only thing stopping us from changing over, we have way to many users  to have to go through and re-create the groups and re-assign them.

Thanks

This is no known ETA when they will be fixed..

If you want, you can open a request on the converters request page and ask for an update to include those :)
When time permits and it is next in the list of acknowledged I can try to get to it.

Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of vBulletin 3.6. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error MySQL gave was: SELECT command denied to user 'nikolasr_pforum'@'localhost' for table '_pizzavbuser'

I have smf on other databse and vbulletin on another database what to do now?

I've done this twice in the last week on two forums.

One has 10k users and 100k posts.

I had issues with the attachments not working.  300mb's of attachemnts. These never imported into SMF.

I was storing Vb attachments inside the database.

I tried to use VB admin's fuction to dump these attachments to the file system.   The VBulletin script would error out with memory allocation error ever few records.

phpmyadmin could not browse this attachment table either.

I had to use mysql delete query to delete attachments the vbulletin script errored on. (ie, it would process attachmentID 101 than display error.  To me that ment the next ID was the bad record.  I would try to delete the next higher record number)  It was trial and error.  Delete 1 row, try dump to file system. repeat.

Once these bad records or what ever they are were removed, the vbulletin dump to file system worked great.

Re-ran the converter and now i have attachments!  Well - i have most of them. Lost probably 50 or so attachemnts.

sorry this post is a mess.. :)

jehovah, when emulating the config.php you need to change the variables to real values, something like:

Code: [Select]
$config['Database']['dbname'] = 'mydatabase';
$config['Database']['tableprefix'] = 'vb_';
$config['Database']['dbpassword'] = 'mypassword';
$config['Database']['dbusername'] = 'myuser';
$config['Database']['servername'] = 'localhost';

the error
Quote
Incorrect database name ''
looks like you have not specified a database name in your config.php

hi I used this convert file. But my database is too big. And I have took that error message when I converting posts:

Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2720308 bytes in C:\Appserv\www\convert.php on line 2298

what can I do now? how can I get more limit?
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6

this is an error from the MySQL-Server.. do you have root access to that server? then you can change the memory limit in my.cnf (configuration file for MySQL)..

Do you know the Converter-Step when this error appeared? I think it was possible during the messages conversion?

Then you can edit the vbulletin36_to_smf.sql and replace:
Code: [Select]
---* {$to_prefix}messages 200
with
Code: [Select]
---* {$to_prefix}messages 100This reduces the simultaneously converted messages from 200 to 100.

I first installed in a directory like <ip>/~<username>

 i just went to try and change the domain over because i've finished porting from vb to smf now, and suddenly i get this error?

Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

the domain name / ip isn't the issue, I believe you specified the wrong absolute path to your vBulletin forum. the path should be similar to the automatically detected path from SMF.

Our converters need direct access to the source forum: both forums must be on the same server, also the MySQL-User specified in SMF must be allowed to read the vBulletin database..

so you mean,,the vb  the folder from ftp and the database ,,both needs to be in the same server?,,or just the ftp folder where the  vb forum is installed ?,

thanks

you can use an external database server but both databases (SMF and vBulletin) must be on the same server.

Example:
databases from both forums are located on dbhost.mydomain.com
files from both forums are located on www.mydomain.com

    LIMIT 0, 500;

Caused the error:

    Unknown column 'pm.touserid' in 'field list'

This also occurred for me as of 10/2/2009.

To fix it, I edited vbulletin36_to_smf.sql line 325.

Before: FROM {$from_prefix}pm;
After: FROM {$from_prefix}pm AS pm;

This allowed it to finish converting this and the remaining sections from what I could tell. However, at the end of the conversion I still had the following error, but since it didn't seem to be related to actually converting anything, I just ignored it. The conversion seems fine, which was from vb 3.6.7 to smf 1.1.10.

You're right to ignore that last error, it is a little bug in the converter that was fixed meanwhile, and will hopefully not happen again at the next update of the converters.
Thank you for sharing your solution to that problem, I haven't got the chance to take a look at it, but I will.

Hey guys this question might has been answered already, but when you run the convert does it change anything in the vb database or just copies that info and converts into the SMF db. The reason I asked is because I do not want to lose the vb database just yet.

Thanks

It doesn't change anything in the vb database, just reads from it, so you most certainly shouldn't lose anything.
Like any job on your databases though, please consider making a full backup of your databases before starting it.

nope, you have to import that sql file into a database at first.. you would also need the file /admin/config.php from your old vBulletin installation.

you can emulate that file if you don't have your old vBulletin files.. the should contain at least this:
Code: [Select]
<?php
$config
['Database']['dbname'] = 'name_of_your_database';
$config['Database']['tableprefix'] = 'vb_';
?>
name_of_your_database needs to be replaced with your database name.
vb_ is the table prefix  for your vBulletin tables.

I'm new to this. So let me see if I understand the steps.

Host: Godaddy.
Current software: vBulleton 3.6.5

So, the steps...

1. Download and extract SMF2.x
2. Upload SMF to host in it's own directory. Not the same directory as vbulleton.
3. Download and extract conversion software.
4. Upload conversion software to smf directory.
5. Run convert.php from web browser.

Is that it? Is there more? Did I miss something?

You need to install SMF first :) (on same or different database) prefixes must be different.

And yes your all other steps are true :)

* and get a backup for safety
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: SkellyCA on November 10, 2011, 06:34:52 PM
so step...

2a. Install smf. Same dastabase, different prefix.

What does the different prefix do?
Title: Re: [SMF Converter] vBulletin 3.6
Post by: Antes on November 10, 2011, 06:49:49 PM
Well if you install with same prefix it can conflict (if both software have same table)

eg. software a has members table software b has members table too... but columns and types are different. It probably broke your database.

if you install with different prefix there will be no conflict

softa_members | softb_members :)

Step 1 : Get a backup xP

Good morning,

I have been trying to use the converter to go from vBulletin 3.6.9 to the latest SMF and have been having issues. We followed the instructions step by step and created a db user that can operate both forums.

We are using a cloud hosting package and because of that when we install apps on our domain the databases get automatically assigned random IP addresses depending on how the servers feel like and there doesn't seem to be any way to override this. The situation is that the db for vB is at one IP address and the db for SMF is on a different one.

When we ran the converter it didn't seem to give us the opportunity to specify the db host, we tried to use the IP addresses as part of the path but it didn't seem to like it much.

Is there a way around this that doesn't involve re-installing SMF using the same database as vBulletin?

And also, are the convert.php and .sql files available for download the most current ones that will work with SMF 2.0.9?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Cristina

Hi Cristina.

Unfortunately no, you can't really specify a different server for each database. Your best bet is really to install SMF in the same database as vB. They use different prefixes so you should be safe. Have a backup just in case ;)

The converter for 2.0.x will work for 2.0.9, yes. The problem is usually with the original source (in your case, vB) since the database schema is often not exactly like the converter expects it to be...
Try it and let us know if you find any problems, we'll do our best to help ;)

Thank you Margaret.

We eventually managed to convert everything but we also had to look up all the errors that we came across and change the .sql file accordingly.

Attached is the file with all the corrections as per various threads on this forum in case there is somebody else out there that needs to do the same job. It's the one that correctly converted everything across to SMF bar a few errors here and there which, after 5 hours of trial error, we couldn't care less about!!   ;D  Total conversion time: 2.5hrs approx.  (670K posts and 60K topics)

Now on to the manual work to re-assign the correct permissions, etc.

Thank you for creating the converter, much appreciated.

All the best,
Cristina  8)
