Title: Avatars
Post by: Oldiesmann on August 16, 2004, 08:09:41 AM
I just got out here today, only to discover that my avatar is kind of missing (the person who runs the site I was hotlinking it off of decided to upgrade the forums to the latest version of IPB (they've been running IPB since the beginning), and in the process wiped out all the custom avatars, including the one I use). I didn't think this was a big problem because I figured I could use Google's image search to dig it up elsewhere and hotlink it from there for now. I got to my profile and discovered that suddenly I can't link to remote avatars. I can only use what's available here. What happened? I want my avatar back!

Did you check already if your remote avatar isn't to big?

Andrea - it's not that it's not accepting the avatar, it's that I don't have the option to link to a remote avatar in the first place. It used to be there but now it isn't. The avatar is only 64x64, so size isn't a problem.

Oh I see. Indeed the option is gone. Also in my profile. So maybe this belongs into the forum "site bug reports"?

Probably. I'll go post it there too...
Title: Option to Link to Remote Avatars is Gone
Post by: Oldiesmann on August 16, 2004, 10:23:27 AM
When I logged on this morning, I noticed my avatar had suddenly gone missing. After a quick check of the site where I was hotlinking that avatar from, I noticed that the admin (one of my friends - it's a church youth site) had finally decided to upgrade to the latest version of IPB (that site's been running IPB from the beginning), but instead of just upgrading the board, he wiped out the old one completely (I think) and then upgraded, causing all the custom avatars to be lost. I didn't think this was a big problem because I knew I could find it elsewhere using Google's image search. After finding another URL, I went to update the URL in my profile, and was surprised to find out that the option to link to a remote avatar is suddenly missing - I can only use the default avatars from this forum, so for now I chose to have no avatar (until the option to use remote avatars returns). Was this a mistake or is there a reason for this? I want my avatar back!

Not necessary. I will move that thread there.

Users were reporting the same thing on my forum after I upgraded to RC1!

I figured it was just some permission I had wrong or something, but I was confused at why they were able to use them before and not now. When I checked, "Choose a remotely stored avatar" was set on X. IIRC, it was like that before but I just hadn't taken note of it or wondered why people were able to still choose remotely stored avatars even when they wern't allowed to. So, after the upgrade and users were reporting problems I just swiched it to allow and everything seems fine.

this happened on one of my boards as well, after upgrade to rc1

what happened was, somehow the permission for remotely hosted avs in a profile was changed to .. X, like tom said. someone just needs to go into the permissions and change it back. is this a bug in the software though? is it meant to be like that and someone didnt realize it would change it for everyone who already had avatars that were remotely hosted?

anyway, its not just your profile.

I think this may be a bug in the upgrader.

Hmm, except that it changes "profile_remote_avata" to the correct permission, I can't see what could be wrong....

Isn't it fixed by reactivating that permission?

Go to Edit Permissions under administration and make sure the "choose a remotely stored avatar" permission is allowed.

Uh oh, I just upgraded to RC2 yesterday, and today noticed that several regular user's avatars are missing - with a broken icon - so I double checked under edit permissions and "choose a remotely stored avatar" IS allowed.

I wonder - NOW what's going on?  :'( :'( :'(

Make sure "check every time its displayed" is not checked.

it is NOT checked...   attached are my settings...

Hmm, one of the users with the problem says he's using a file ending in .art

I'm surprised he's not getting a warning....  ah hah!  There is no setting for "only allow which file types" under avatars...  could that be the problem?

It only currently supports gif, jpeg/jpe/jpg, bmp, and png.  Files like art, psp, psd, eps, pdf... aren't supported I'm afraid :/.

.pdf????

I thought .pdf was the file-extension for Adobe Acrobat Personal Document Format (or something like that), not an image-file.  ???

Well, David thinks it's an image file :P (I'm kidding, but he has said that.)

ok, so maybe users should get a warning message when uploading avatars that are not .gif or.jpeg / .jpg...   I guess that's afeature request. :)
