Are you Developing SMF with to work with some of the newer features of lamp

such as php 5.0.0b1 and to take advantage of mysql 4.0+ new features

The requirments for the 1.0 release are PHP 4.1.0 and MySQL 3.23.4.

As PHP is backwards compatible, it should be.  Since I have never worked with PHP 5.x I can't say for sure.

I have tested it with a more recent cvs version of PHP, and yes it does... it's even faster.

If it doesn't, it's a problem wth PHP, not SMF.  It's supposed to be backward compatible
