After all those conversion failures, I went back to my SMF to find it wiped clean, no users, no forums, etc.

If I'm honest I don't know, having never used one of the convertors, however please be patient, I',m sure one of the devs will post soon.
Nevermind, found the answer :)
Just for bookkeeping's sake... I'll guess the issue was that the user didn't have access to both databases. An easy mistake to make...
