Title: New phpBB converter success
Post by: packman on October 10, 2004, 05:18:28 PM
To help build some confidence in the phpBB2 converter...I used it earlier this evening to migrate 950 users and 25000 posts from a phpBB2 v2.0.10 system across to SMF.  :) I'd been planning the migration for some time and had tested the migration a number of times, so the actual conversion only took a few minutes and the users were only without a forum for around 10 minutes.

My users haven't found anything wrong...yet...and they're usually quick to spot problems!

Glad to here it went well :).

Glad it went well. If you don't find any problems, we can probably release it when RC2 goes public. This will be even more reason for people to go from phpBB to SMF. Now if I can only find out why people tend to ignore me when I suggest that they switch to SMF...

I think you'll find that [Unknown] released the new version of the converter a few days ago!

My users have been very complimentary about SMF so far and no-one has commented about moving away from phpBB.

I think you'll find that people will start rushing to SMF once v1.0 Final is released. I'd always intended waiting for that version, but RC1/RC2 were so stable and problem free on my test domain that I decided to jump ship sooner than I planned. Other people who haven't been tracking the project to the same extent will probably wait.

Yeah, I noticed that it had been released after I posted that. As for converting, it converted my test board on Lycos UK quite nicely - http://members.lycos.co.uk/theoldiesdude/smf/index.php ;)

I know people will start rushing to SMF. I'm doing my part by mentioning it in my signature on most of the messageboards I'm a member of (I lost track a long time ago), and telling others about it. My host has already said that once their forum gets busier, they'll switch. They have a couple "bulk" packages that should draw in a ton of people once word gets out: 5GB of space and 50GB of bandwidth for $15/month or 10GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth for $25/month (http://www.eniki.net if you're interested).

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already run my own dedicated server in a secure hosting centre in the South of England.

I've put a SMF banner on my main web site and my users definitely know it exists now and I think a few of them may be thinking about what to do with their own forums.

I tried the conversion and it didn't bring over all of the forums and/or categories, any ideas???
I am trying to convert from phpbb extreme, but it is phpbb 2.0.1.0.

I am trying to convert from phpbb extreme, but it is phpbb 2.0.1.0.

The only thing you need before running the converter is a working SMF installation using the same database as phpBB uses. There are no mods required to phpBB or SMF.

I don't know phpBB extreme. Is it based on phpBB 2.0.1.0 or 2.0.10? The converter runs OK on my 2.0.10 installation. Does the extreme version change any table names or significantly modify any of the tables? Did the conversion process throw out any errors that might give a clue about what went wrong? When you say it didn't bring over all of the forums and/or categories, did it bring any of them across?

How in heck do I use the converter? There are no instructions and Im afraid Im not good at guessing..

What on earth do I do with it when Ive downloaded it?
Title: Re: New phpBB converter success

1) You need to have a working SMF installation using the same database as your phpBB2 system. The converter will wipe out most SMF data as it runs, so don't use it on a busy SMF forum! The phpBB2 database isn't changed by the converter, so you can re-run it as many times as you like without affecting your phpBB2 forum.

2) Put the converter in your top level SMF directory (the one that contains Settings.php)

3) Run it with http://www.mysmfsite.com/smf/phpBB2_to_smf.php (adjust the italics bit for your site and SMF directory name)

4) Answer the questions and click on buttons as prompted

5) On successful completion delete the converter from your top level SMF directory

You'll need to know the database name, username/password to log into the database with (the user needs to have access to both the SMF and phpBB2 data) and the location of the phpBB2 system. Hopefully everything else is explained as the converter runs.

It's not clear from the description and haven't had time to try them yet...do your tools update the underlying database records or just fix each link in the HTML code as the page is created for display. I was hoping it was the former, e.g. it's a permanent fix.
Title: Re: New phpBB converter success
Post by: Spaceman-Spiff on October 23, 2004, 12:33:40 PM
It doesn't search your database and update all of your old links. It only acts as a redirector. For example, if someone clicks on an old link to your forum such as http://www.site.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4 it will get redirected to http://www.site.com/forum/index.php?board=4
It's quite handy if your forum contains many links to other parts of your own forum, or if some of your boards/topics are being linked by other sites.

Hi All...
Is this still a relevant tool or is there an upgrade of some sort?  Also...and this is a very lame question, but in this step -
Quote2) Put the converter in your top level SMF directory (the one that contains Settings.php)
- I download to a Windows machine and then I have to FTP up to my host server.  The download appears as a notpad document.  Is that what it should look like?

Yes, there is no upgrade for phpBB... just conversion.  The tool on the downloads page is what you're looking for.

On some computers, it will show as a text file.  Don't be alarmed ;).

Well, you may have passwords hashed in some non-standard way.  I guess one way to solve this is to use the password recovery tool (forgot password.)

Does this mean you have to use the phpbb prefix when first installing the smf forum?
Title: Re: New phpBB converter success
Post by: fabio on January 29, 2005, 12:15:31 PM
the prefix is not important since the script will take whatever name you use from the config files
so you just install smf , create a config file fro phpbb and then run the script

I'm getting the following error when running the phpbb2_to_smf converter:

Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB2. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

How can I tell if I have phpbb2 or version 1?  Does this version work for any other phpbb version?  Help please!

This means that you're using separate databases.  Example:

SMF's database accessable by the SMF user.
phpBB's database accessable by the phpBB user.

This won't work.  You could make it like this:

SMF's database accessable by the SMF user.
phpBB's database accessable by the phpBB user and the SMF user.

Or you could make it like this:

SMF and phpBB's database accessable by the SMF and phpBB users.

But otherwise SMF can't get the data from phpBB to convert!  I mean, how is it going to copy if you don't give it access?!

Hello ,
I also get the same problem:
QuoteSorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB2. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

Above I get these lines:

QuoteNotice: Undefined variable: dbname in /www/htdocs/xxxxx/smf/phpbb2_to_smf.php on line 121

Notice: Undefined variable: table_prefix in /www/htdocs/xxxxx/smf/phpbb2_to_smf.php on line 121

This is what it says in the lines:

Quote// *** Figure out the prefix... ***********************************************
   require_once($_POST['path_from'] . '/config.' . $phpEx);
   $from_prefix = '`' . $dbname . '`.' . $table_prefix;
// ***************************************************************************

Both forums are working perfectly and the phpBB forum even has nearly 10000 posts. Both installations are in the same database . Can the problem be , that I have a NUKE installation and the tables have the prefeix nuke_ ?
Please help so I can get going with SMF  :D

Yes.  The converter does not natively support PHP-Nuke without modification.  I believe there's a topic on that in this board, even.

Notice: Undefined index: convert_db_pass in /home/httpd/vhosts/xxxxx.net/httpdocs/smf/phpbb2_to_smf.php on line 108

The database password you entered was incorrect. Please make sure you are using the right password (for the SMF user!) and try it again.

The phpBB install was a fresh install of v2.0.11 and data from my working forums imported. The fresh install is working OK.

SMF was installed to use the same database as phpBB and is working.

I double checked the database password was correct on the server but still get the message.

Prior to this error message, the previous screen said

Convert Smileys?
You have two options for converting Smileys. You can use the default Smileys and add tags for these to match the standard phpBB2 smileys. Alternatively, if you are sure that there are no copyright issues with using the Smileys from your phpBB2 forum with SMF, you can copy your phpBB2 Smileys across and replace all the SMF Smileys in the default Smileys set. Please select which type of conversion you want:
-Use standard SMF Smileys.
Copy phpBB2 Smileys to SMF.

Any suggestions?

If everything is there, and you're happy with it, it should be okay to stick with it.

Basically, you didn't get to the additional steps of smileys or attachments.

Hack I had work "keep new posts new" and "quick reply" and "topics anywhere" very basic stuff.

Would you be willing to post the output of these queries, please?

SHOW CREATE TABLE phpbb_topics;
SHOW CREATE TABLE phpbb_posts;
SHOW CREATE TABLE phpbb_posts_text;
SHOW CREATE TABLE phpbb_vote_desc;
SHOW CREATE TABLE phpbb_forums;

The reason I want these is to tell what might have failed during the conversion.  These tables are the ones involved in the queries that, presumably, didn't work.

Are you using the latest version of phpBB?

I have a page saved on my HDD called SMF 1.0 Conversion Guide but not sure where it came from.

Here's the relevant sections...

Installing SMF

The first thing you need to do, before you can convert, is upload all of the files in the installation package found on the downloads page to your server in, preferably, a directory other than your current software. You can upload it to any directory accessable by URL, but if you're not sure where to put it, a directory named "forum" or "smf" is a good choice. You may wish to make sure that all of the folders were uploaded, such as Themes/default/languages, because some FTP clients have been known to drop files.

If you want or need to install any languages other than English, download the corresponding versions from the download page, and upload them to the same directory you uploaded SMF to. This should put additional files in Themes/default/languages and, in most cases, Themes/default/images.
After you have finished uploading the files, point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.tld/forum/install.php - where www.yourdomain.tld/forum is the URL to where you uploaded it. You should then see an installer interface.

The first page you see may request your FTP information. If you see this screen, it is because the installer found some files or folders with inadequate permissions for SMF to run properly. If you enter your FTP information here, the installer can automatically fix these permissions for you. Please note that the path should be the same path you see in your FTP client. For example, it might be "public_html/forum". And remember, the installer will not save your FTP password anywhere.

When you are asked for MySQL login information, make sure the user you specify has access to the database your current software is using (if it uses MySQL.) Often, the easiest way to do this is to install with the same database name, username, and password as your other software (but with a prefix like "smf_".)

Converting from your current software

After you have finished with the installer (it should walk you through the rest of the process) and deleted the install.php file, you're ready to get the conversion process going. Be warned, however, that the process can take some time for larger forums, because it has been engineered not to disrupt the server's normal operations.

To begin, download the converter you want from the download page. If there is no converter available for the software or version you're using, please check the forum for information about one. Otherwise, download the file (for example, it might be yoursoftware_to_smf.php) and upload it to the same folder as SMF.

Once that's done, use your browser to go to http://www.yourdomain.tld/forum/yoursoftware_to_smf.php, where www.yourdomain.tld.forum is the URL to where you put SMF, and yoursoftware_to_smf.php is the name of the converter. You should be presented with two boxes - one for the path to SMF, which should already be correct, and another for your software. The converters will detect if the path is correct for you, so if it takes a few tries, don't worry. You will also see a box for the current password - this should be the password for the MySQL account you installed SMF with.

After you hit continue, the conversion process will begin. Depending on the size of your forum, it may take quite some time, but it will continue for you automatically. You may, near the end, be prompted to specify whether you wish for some extra feature converted, but that is very converter-specific.

Some of my own notes (not part of the above document)

The SMF and phpBB installations should be on the same server and sharing the same database and username.

The phpBB tables can be deleted after the conversion or you can export the SMF data and import it into a new install of SMF on another server or wherever you like.

Before running the converter, make sure all directories, sub-directoires and files are 777 as per SMF install instructions.

If you want to use phpBB smilieys (they have some that are not in the standard SMF set and will disappear from existing posts), be sure to 777 your SMF Smileys sub-directory and the two sub-directories - classic and default.

If all this is in place, it works a treat and is very fast.

And let me just say one thing: making the switch from phpBB to SMF is a decision you'll never regret :).  Welcome to SMF!

hello all

i found smf a few days ago and to be honest i`m veryy glad i did :-)
i run a couple phpbb boards and i want to convert them to smf

so i used the script found here . i did as instructed and the script did returned any errors
everythning seemed to be ok till i tried to login !

only the first member in the phpbb user table is able to login
so i checked the db. the password field is empty for but the previous mentioned user (who by the way is the admin of the phpbb board if it has something to do)

any ideas ???

Hello,

was the above problem solved? I think I have the same, or even worse, because it seems to have converted only the first member, so I can not even use the pw retrieval tool.

I get the following output:

Convert Smileys?
You have two options for converting Smileys. You can use the default Smileys and add tags for these to match the standard phpBB2 smileys. Alternatively, if you are sure that there are no copyright issues with using the Smileys from your phpBB2 forum with SMF, you can copy your phpBB2 Smileys across and replace all the SMF Smileys in the default Smileys set. Please select which type of conversion you want:
Use standard SMF Smileys.
Copy phpBB2 Smileys to SMF.

The converters currently available on the download page are written for SMF 1.0.x. Since the table structure has been changed, the converters won't work for SMF 1.1 (until that version is released of course :))

All I can say is WOW!  I installed SMF a few days ago.  Wondered if I wanted to try to convert my phpBB board over.  So I spent some time changing the layout and looks of my new SMF board.  Then, decided to make this conversion.  ZERO problems!  None at all.  All posts, users, topics, boards...everything...transferred without a hitch!

Thanks for making it so easy!

Hi,

Sorry I am really confused. I dont get this and really appreciate any help. I do want to convert frpm PHPBB to smf.

I dont understand. I have my forum on my dmain in a subdomain : http://forum.mydomain.com and it is phpbb now.

Now I want to convert this to smf. What to do? I can not install smf on the same catalog and then run the converter, can I?

Where to install smf fiirst before I run the converter? Should I uninstall my phpbb first?

best regrads

Hi pasargad,

First, install SMF on the same server, but to a different directory (For example www.mydomain.com/smf). Get SMF working comlpetely independantly of phpBB as your first step.

Second, upload the converter to your now working SMF install, and follow instructions (This will NOT destroy phpBB!)

Third, if you're happy with the conversion, rename your old phpBB folder ('forum') to something like 'oldforum', and rename the SMF folder to 'forum' - this will make SMF your new "forum". You will also need to upload a file called repair_settings.php from the downloads page here to fix your paths after doing this - but let's do one step at a time :)

Grudge, isn't there a step between two and three needed here?

He'll need to export the SMF tables from the converted phpbb installation and then import them into his new SMF installation. Then go into Admin settings on the new SMF and check all paths refer to the new installation rather than the old - or does repair settings.php take care of this?

No, the converting tool imports the database into the new SMF installation, so there is no seperate manual exporting or importing at all.
Also the repair_settings.php does exactly that, it checks and repairs the paths. Very nice tool, btw.

Hi again,

I did manage the conversion of a large PHPBB forum to SMF in 2 hours. Everything went ok and it is working perfectly now.

I am really satisfied with SMF and hope that more will use this great application. In spite of constantly uppgrading/updating my old phpbb my site was hacked 2 times because of  security reasons in phpbb during the last 6 month.

I could even help your team for a Persian translation if you are interested? Hope to contribute little to make SMF more popular.

Best regards

I have done all of the above, and for some reason this isn't working out.

I am going from one site to a new site, two different data bases, and am going crazy with this! :'(

Any help would be so greatly appreciated with this. I have even posted a ticket with my host since both the phpbb and the smf are hosted with the same hosting company.

The best way is to just re-install SMF on your phpBB database. That will prevent any problems caused by SMF not being able to access your phpBB database.
Title: Re: New phpBB converter success

Actually (first thank you for your reply!) what I did was install the old forum on the new site under a sub web, then I used the converter and it worked perfectly!

I just could not figure out how to do  this from one web address to another.

Maybe someone could write a few tutorials on all of this conversion stuff for those who aren't really php pros? Make them a sticky for others?

Now I need to figure out how to get my logo in there as well as adsense, and I would like to impliment a pay pal donation thing as well since this is a medical forum. (http://fms-forum.com )

I still have some research to do through here, and I would like to thank you all for a wonderful forum that has neat features without me having to mod them into it!

You guys rock  ;)

I'm not actually sure if it's possible to convert from one address to another (even if they're on the same server). If you've used CPanel's add-on-domains feature to add the other address to an existing hosting account, then it should be available as a subdomain as well, and you could always use that subdomain then change the URLs after converting.

To add your logo, simply edit index.template.php (look for "// Forum name and logo go here").

For Paypal, you've got a couple of options:
1. Add a general "donate" button:
Login to PayPal.
Click on the "Merchant Tools" tab.
Click on "Website Payments Standard"
About three paragraphs down, you should see something about "Flexible". Click on "donations" and follow the instructions to customize it to your liking.
Once you're done, you'll get HTML code that can be inserted into your forum template to display a nice little "donate" button...

2. There is also a paypal donations mod that lets you keep track of who's donated, among other things. However, you will have to register at www.smitalia.net to get it (the author pulled his mods from this site following a disagreement related to translation of Italian language files...).

Adsense is also easy to do, and there are quite a few posts on that subject here, so you shouldn't have much trouble with that.

Hey, love your screen name, Oldies man! Gotta love those oldies, best you can listen to!

Anyhow, thanks for the information, and sorry you lost someone to a silly argument, but I suppose that is how it goes sometimes, sadly.

I'm going to print your post if that is OK with you.

Originally, I had the forum on http://fmsforum.debsplace.org then purchased the fms-forum.com and moved it to a new hosting plan with my host. I "thought" that I could do this from one web site to another. Instead I just created a sub on the new site and did the rest. Once I did that, it was totally so easy to do.

I have adsense on the other site, now I need to remove that one. Also, if I delete the database on the sub forum on the new host, will that interfer with the smf forum?

Hey,
I'm new to this whole thing....any help would be much appreciated.
Before I get started I just want to say sorry...Since I will be bringing back an old problem mentioned on page two of this thread.

QuoteSorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB2. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

and [unknown]'s response was...
QuoteThis means that you're using separate databases.

-[Unknown]

now.....
How do I go about doing this?
I am currently using windows...not UNIX or LINUX or whatever....
any help, again will be much appreciated.

I followed the instructions on the converter and received this message
Converting ranks... Successful.

Converting members... Unsuccessful!

Caused the error:

Unknown column 'pm_email_notify' in 'field list'

It successfully converted the first two options but I received this error when converting members. What am I doing wrong?

I am now kicking my own butt for not finding SMF before attaching MKportal to phpBB.  The way the directories are set up is /forum and /mkportal

I want to switch over to SMF and it seems pretty simple, but is there a way to create the change inside of the /forum directory?  Or can I create the change inside /smf and then delete  the first /forum and rename /smf to /forum?  Hopefully that makes sense.

Yes you can do that.  You just need to use repair_settings.php afterwards.
What is repair_settings.php? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18096.0)

First, install SMF on the same server, but to a different directory (For example www.mydomain.com/smf). Get SMF working comlpetely independantly of phpBB as your first step.

Second, upload the converter to your now working SMF install, and follow instructions (This will NOT destroy phpBB!)
