Title: SMF 1.0 RC2
Post by: [Unknown] on October 11, 2004, 01:09:34 AM
We are happy to bring you the second (and final) Release Candidate of Simple Machines Forum.  As always, we hope that this new version is better, more stable, and more efficient than those previous.  Remember, Charter Members - there are a few things in this package that weren't in the one you guys got!

Some of the major changes made in this release (from RC1) are:

Please see the changelog for a more detailed list of these changes, and more.

We would much appreciate it if you would give us constructive feedback on this release, as well as bug reports.  These are two of the things that really help a project grow and strive.  The next release should be the final 1.0 release, so it's crucial we solve as many issues as possible before then.

Some changes have been made that require template changes.  For the most part, you should be able to use your old templates... but without these new features.  Please *tell us* if your old templates (that worked with RC1) don't work with RC2.  We will fix it.

If you are upgrading from RC1, you only need to use the "update" package because it includes just the changed files.  However, if you have any mods installed it would be better to use the "upgrade" package.  Remember that you can use the "upgrade" package to go from any previous version of SMF.  You can also use it to upgrade from YaBB SE.

You can always find information posted here about things like installation (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6765.0), upgrade (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6832.0), and more.  The zip files themselves also include manuals.  If you would like us to install or upgrade for you, please tell us and we'll try to get right on it.

Thanks,
Simple Machines

Great..  :D
Integrated with MAMBO? wow!!! Cool...
I will try to install it tonight, upgrade from RC1. And testing.
Also report, if any bugs found.
Thank You again.

Problem occurs while change themes from admin menu:
- Fatal error: Call to undefined function: loadlangtage() in /home/html/Sources/Themes.php on line 125
I forgot to change my template to default SMF, before doing upgrade?

It's very likely they would be overwritten.

Somehow you got a version of that file with a typo in it. That should say loadLanguage not loadLangtage. Change that and it should work just fine. Oddly enough, the version available from the download page doesn't have this typo.

NNNIIICE :)

I appreciate this very much.  I lost a few themes from the RC1 upgrade... I recreated a couple... and I don't want to lose them again :)

No matter how hard I tried... I had font issues, so I couldn't just "copy and install" them with the RC1 release... they had to be redone.

Thanks again.

Seamless update.

I backed up my modified index.template.php and the CSS file associated with it, did the upgrade, then replaced those files that I modified from RC1 - works excellent.

Were there any major changes in the /default/index.template.php file that should suggest that I modify the RC2?

Excellent!  I'm psyched that RC2 is out.  Now, I just need David to upgrade my forum for me.  I'm guessing this means a complete finalized public version will be coming out within a few months, right?

Upgraded just fine, myself.  Wasn't using any packages, so no comments there.  Have a hacked up index.template.php and index.php in the main forum directory.  I had a good list of what I had done to the index.php file, so I uploaded the new file and then hacked it to work.  I didn't keep good documentation of my changes to index.template.php.  Instead of trying to rehack it, I did not upload the RC2 copy.  Instead, after uploading everything else, I compared my version with the RC2 version line-by-line.  Everything works!

That's why the default template shouldn't be changed. If you create a new theme "my slick theme", set the default to that and change that template your done. A upgrade won't touch your custom theme files, but it will contain new default templates.
And if you don't change a file in your custom template, don't copy the file over to it so it will use the one out of the default template.

My own index.template.php has changed only once since beta 4.1 I think :)

Oh, RC2 is pretty good  - kudos to the dev team 8)

Thanks.  All of those recommendations have been followed since I first installed the board.  :)

The default template hasn't been changed, but the index.template.php file in the custom template still had to be upgraded.  I didn't specify I was working from a template other than the default, since that really had nothing to do with the point of my post, which was that there were no hitches upgrading to RC2.  I only mentioned the specifics of upgrading my index.template.php file because I've seen a few posts around asking for specific changes and I was dropping a subtle hint that instead of asking for someone else to do the work and provide a list, you can just look at the files to see what is different.

Post by: Elissen on October 12, 2004, 08:27:38 AM
Sorry for that, I made that mistake once myself (editing the default template) :-X

Luckily, there now also is a changelog-themes.txt that should help a lot for the templates so if something needs to be changed it should be easy to find :)

The attachments/avatars thing is a known issue.  It would help greatly if I could see a dump of your attachments table and a list of the filenames in your attachments directory. (I can't reproduce, I need test data..)

If people reattach and/or reupload them, they will fix themselves.

Mambo Open Source (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6960)

You won't be able to reinstall the mods until they are updated and marked compatible with RC2.

For aaronsnet's problem... you didn't upload all the files from the upgrade package.

[Unknown] - don't forget the "other" SMF/Mambo project.

I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say about it, but I will say that there has been significant progress in efforts to integrate SMF as an actual module of Mambo. More details to come when I find out how much I can say :)

But, now that I'm an SMF convert, that really does not matter, now does it. ;)

Indeed. Personally I support any free BB out there, and certainly have nothing but praise for any team who give their time and effort to the public for free. That said it doesn't mean I don't strive to make SMF the best of the bunch ;)

Who said I was putting it down? I used phpBB2 for the last 2-3 years (until I migrated to SMF) and was following the progress of v2.2, including putting a few CVS versions up to try out. I'm sure it will be a great product, but I was left with the feeling that what is just a point upgrade (2.0 -> 2.2) was becoming as big (and as long) a job as painting the Cistine Chapel.

The other reason I chose SMF over phpBB is the enlightened view of the SMF devs who believe that integration, e.g. with CMS/portals, is a goal worth assisting. The phpBB devs have never seemed interested in integration...unless it was integration with a portal that they were eventually going to write.

And now they're not *required* anymore. Hopefully this doesn't mean permanent tables will be used for Search, since it eats space and it's the primary reason I converted from phpBB2 to SMF.

What Ben said. They are not *required*, but if your server can do them then it will use them. It was fixed as people on poorly configured servers were having trouble.

The attachments/avatars thing is a known issue.  It would help greatly if I could see a dump of your attachments table and a list of the filenames in your attachments directory. (I can't reproduce, I need test data..)

If people reattach and/or reupload them, they will fix themselves.

Question - if the package manager makes changes... does it make changes to the selected default forum template, or just the default template supplied with a new install?

For example, I'm using a modified classic template as my default template, and I do know whether the changes are being made to that.

Thanks,

The question remains though, for any package updates... do they only modify the supplied default template, the used default template, or all templates on the server... my vote is for all templates on the server.. otherwise things will become as complicated as doing it by hand.

Firstly, don't install a mod unless *every* step succeeds. Secondly, if worst comes to worst just reupload the files and try again (Reupload from a standard SMF install)

Does it prompt you for an FTP password, or anything?  If it won't let you proceed, something's holding it back.

The "Unable to find package file!" error can be caused by your Packages directory not being writable.

Søren Bjerg, I'm afraid that's correct.  I suppose it should look nicer than that though, huh?  I've got an idea to fix it though... I don't suppose you could give me FTP access (to any directory, however restricted) so I can test a quick script to make it work anyway ;)?

If it won't install on Subs.php, are you certain you haven't modified it?  The step in Subs.php will fail if you're not using a 1.0 RC2 file...

I'm 100% sure. When it initially failed, I went back some posts in this thread, because I could remember seeing something about "if not all steps said success", and found Grudge's posts. Extracted a clean RC2 Subs.php from the full archive I downloaded back when RC2 was released to the CMs.

Yeah I have tried putting in several different combos of ftp server, filepaths, etc.  I have tested them using my FTP program, so I know the username and password are correct, but just for kicks I tried putting in the database password.  All with the same result ... it just refreshes the page.

Most of the time, the path is the one people get wrong.  It's actually hard to explain, because it seems logical that it would be the file path - it's not.

Examples are best.  Here, the path to the forum is /home/simple/public_html/community.  This is the "path".  You of course all know the URL.

The path, for FTP, is different.  It is /public_html/communty.  Why?  Because when you log into FTP, you can't go to /home - there is no /home!  You're already inside /home/username, and you can't get out of it.  Because of this, you need to type the path you see when you log in with an FTP client.

I'll probably end up finding out it does this already... but what about if someone enters the full path, SMF could check if they have something before public_html, and if the connect fails try again but removing all the bits the user entered before public_html, or otherwise telling the user to try the suggested path (The one they entered bar all stuff before public_html)

Please use the RC2 files from the downloads page, they are a bit newer (there were two weeks between, after all) than the ones released to Charter Members...

That did it ... I was using the file path ... thanks :)

I'll probably end up finding out it does this already... but what about if someone enters the full path, SMF could check if they have something before public_html, and if the connect fails try again but removing all the bits the user entered before public_html, or otherwise telling the user to try the suggested path (The one they entered bar all stuff before public_html)

I recently changed it to do just this, but the problem is that not all hosts use the /home/username scheme.

Also, it defaults to a value that *should* be correct - to anyone who has an incorrect default, I would appreciate a pm or post with both the wrong and the right FTP paths, not to mention the physical file path.

W0W!    :D

I've been busy and have not checked here for a while and just found out this past weekend that RC2 was out. Again I say W0W! The DevTeam did a fantastic job on this and the smoothness of the upgrade went fantastically sweet!

THANKS! to ALL there at SMF HQ & all your homes or where ever you put your time into this fantastic BB.

I was so excited that RC2 was out that when I got around to installing and running the upgrade I forgot the biggest thing, and that is Backup! - Backup! - Backup!
BUT! thanks to the great work that the DevTeam has done I had no problems at all with the update!  ;)

I would like to say a few things I really like about this New SMF,
the neatest thing I have found with it so far, (I have only had it up about 12 hours now),
but I LOVE the Attachment Manager additions that are on the SMF of now being able to click a box beside any or all attachments to delete things in there.

The reason I say this is that I run a site that is a Golf Site and there are a lot of Tours played that the users attach small game reporting files and some tours are a week to 4 weeks long and others are 3 or 6 or 12 months long. And this deleting with check boxes makes it a lot nicer to be able to pick and choose the files you want or need to to clean the attachments up.

KUDOS! to the DevTeam once more for this great feature . . . . . .  ;)

I am having one small problem and will post another post to explain that one . . . . . .  ???

<-EDIT->
OK! slap my hand! I posted my thread and then remembered another thread and went and checked it out about META and went and clicked on the "Use a META redirect instead of HTTP", and think it has fixed the little problem now.

Sorry!  so we deleted my second post and will watch this and see if we have fixed the problem, Silence is Golden, if you don't hear back from Me!    ;)

Click the "small patch available (click to install.)" link...

-[Unknown]
I have done that several times. Every time it says 'There are no installation or uninstallation actions defined!'' and that list gets longer...

I have absolutely the same behaviour in my installation of RC2.

When I click on the "small patch available (click to install.)" link, I get the response:
QuotePackage Manager - Install Actions
Install Actions for archive smf_1-0-rc2_fixes.tar.gz:
There are no installation or uninstallation actions defined!

If I then click on the "Browse Packages" link, the downloaded package appears in the list:
QuotePackage Manager - Browse Packages
Modification Packages
   Mod Name Version
1. SMF 1.0 RC2 Fix Package 1.0  [ Apply Mod ] [ List Files ] [ Delete ]

"Apply Mod" gives me the same "no installation or uninstallation actions" described above, "Delete" works fine, "List Files" seems to work fine, too:
QuoteList files in package
Files in archive smf_1-0-rc2_fixes.tar.gz:
smf_1-0-rc2_fixes.mod (5737 bytes)
package-info.xml (1049 bytes)

I can even watch the files by clicking the filenames, all seems to be fine. How can they lack the "installation or uninstallation actions" without being corrupt???

In the "Latest packages" box above the "Package Manager" box, the "small patch available (click to install.)" link is still there. If I click it, all starts over again, but ANOTHER package is downloaded and put in the package dir:
QuotePackage Manager - Browse Packages
Modification Packages
   Mod Name Version
1. SMF 1.0 RC2 Fix Package 1.0  [ Apply Mod ] [ List Files ] [ Delete ]
2. SMF 1.0 RC2 Fix Package 1.0  [ Apply Mod ] [ List Files ] [ Delete ]

The filename of the package #1 is the original smf_1-0-rc2_fixes_1.tar.gz, filename of #2 is smf_1-0-rc2_fixes_1.tar.gz, of #3 is smf_1-0-rc2_fixes_2.tar.gz and so on.

I don't know if all this has to do with "Safe Mode" but if this is the case why don't you simply check for Safe Mode and tell the user that this feature only works with "Safe Mode" turned off?

Your host may be in safe mode, you may have outdated files, or... not totally sure.

It was in RC2 that a few things to do with this "automatic installation" feature were added; if you have a PackageGet.php or Packages.php from an older version of SMF 1.0 RC2 (you're not a Charter Member, so I should hope you don't...) or from 1.0 RC1, it won't work.

To answer the last thing first: My files are completely of the latest RC2 package which was available for public download, not the Charter pre release.

And yes, my server IS in safe mode. But I have to repeat:
Quote from: sriedel on October 19, 2004, 03:36:14 PM
I don't know if all this has to do with "Safe Mode" but if this is the case why don't you simply check for Safe Mode and tell the user that this feature only works with "Safe Mode" turned off?

If the current problems are really caused by Safe Mode (they doesn't have to be anyway, if you can chmod files by FTP you can "put" them, too ;) ), you should really catch that by something like:

<?php
// Check for safe mode
if (ini_get('safe_mode')){
// Do it the safe mode way
} else {
// Do it the regular way
}
?>

But a feedback like "There are no installation or uninstallation actions defined!" is misleading, to say the least. My two cents.
Title: Re: SMF 1.0 RC2
Post by: [Unknown] on October 20, 2004, 03:35:37 AM
Because, certain decent hosts running safe mode have their servers configured to run PHP properly with safe mode such that things like this don't happen.

(for example, SMF and its package manager works perfectly fine under Lycos UK, which is a completely free and very safe mode service... but configured properly..)

Title: Re: SMF 1.0 RC2
Post by: sriedel on October 20, 2004, 05:02:35 AM
Ok, I take the other route to what I want to show:

All bad things that may come from Safe Mode is that the files cannot be modified/written directly (because of process UID not matching the file UID or open_basedir restrictions or whatever).

But I can download the package, I can view the package, I can view the source of each file in the package. There ARE installation actions in the source files, and they ARE accessible by the package manager. Ok, the patched file cannot be written, but the user feedback "There are no installation or uninstallation actions defined!" IS WRONG.

I can absolutely accept when this and that is not possible due to e.g. Safe Mode restrictions. That's is perfectly fine. But heck, I was looking for the problem quite a while. A message like "The new or modified files of that package cannot be written. If the file permissions are correct your server runs PHP in Safe Mode and/or is not properly configured. Bug your administrator but not the SMF authors!" would be absolutely sufficient ;)

Gosh, getting so worked up... calm down.

You'll be happy to know that's exactly one of the things this package was set to fix (showing that message too often.)  You just can't install it.  Maybe... just maybe... I knew what I was talking about?

Nah, can't be... rediculous.  It's not like I wrote it or anything.

I think you'll need to use the upgrade package instead of the update package on the downloads page for that.

QuoteUse this if you have YaBB SE 1.5.5, SMF 1.0 RC1, or lower installed - just use upgrade.php.

Does the post group really count? Like, is it important? I know a lot of excellent members that have very rich replies and are still low in count, and also know members with thousands of them and little, if any, are really worth the space in the db. So don't concern yourself with that so much.

I was under the impression that the Private Messages feature was getting a slight facelift in RC2. I can't seem to find that anywhere in thsi thread and I was unable to notice a difference on my forum using the SMF default theme. Specifically, I was looking for the ability to make private messages display much like a free Email (yahoo, gmail, hotmail) would display.. With a list of the inbox and each one was a link. To take that a step further, threaded conversations like GMAIL (combining your inbox/outbox on certain messages would be awesome). The way it is right now is rather difficult to browse and read new private messages (for me at least). Any news on this? Perhaps it was a mod that I missed or something... Thanks

You've to wait, it'll perhaps change, but not for 1.0. RC is a feature stop (I don't know if it's here, too ;) ), so there is only bug fixing until 1.0.

Doing that wouldn't exactly be the most targeted advertisement, now would it?
The people you are trying to reach out to are webmasters with online communities from all over the world... a full-page ad in the New York Times will be seen by millions of people, but only in the US... a very very small portion of those viewers are your target group... another, much smaller portion of those people will decide to switch to SMF from that...

Might be fun, but extremely pointless :P

QuoteFor Thousands of Web Developers like myself, the choices for Forum software have been few and far between, many charge you an Annual fee to use their software, other choices tend to be buggy and/or lack features that would be considered essential to a successful community site, or support forum.  Until now the best choice for open source forum software has been the largely touted phpBB
make way for SMF (Simple Machines Forum), a newly established forum system that seems to have the developer strengths(perfectionist code and commenting), and a growing mod community thats ready to challenge phpBB's throne.

sorry for jumping the gun though  :-X

Well at least your heart is in the right place :)

I'm not sure that's the best wording anyway. The article just sort of ends, and doesn't really go anywhere. There should at least be some information about some of the unique features in SMF, integration efforts, and maybe even a blurb about how it's the official board of the Toronto Raptors...

I don't really keep up with NBA, so I'd never even heard of the Raptors before the person running that board posted in the Showcase board about it...

The Raptors must be popular somewhere - their board has only been up for about a month and a half, and already has 1477 members...

Why?

You wouldn't seriously issue a Press Release for a Beta? Would you ?

Why not? I hardly consider this a beta anymore btw.

I think its more to do with the fact that the first full release is coming out and they just want people to see there best work, but i suppose there arent any critical bugs as we would have been asked to update if there were.

but there will still be small bug fixes and minor changes between RC2 and Final. Would you want to find this great recommendation at /. only to have to upgrade the software shortly after? That might not reflect well. Plus, it wouldn't sound well to say "Come to SMF, get our (almost) finished product!" ;)
of course, that isnt' to say we aren't happy to have people using the almost finished product, it's awesome! It's just not the thing to say in a "Press Release"

Theres a few sites im ready to post a message (about 5) advertising SMF, one is a webhost (Netrulon.com) , another is a RPG board (www.sb27fleet.tk) My Site ofcourse (www.t101.shyper.com/place), The E-Zine i started (www.ezine.shyper.com) and a boys football club site, hopefully someone will create a good post that i can just copy as im not that imaginative. Will Simplemachines do a press release message? And is there a list of bugs (Like where they are and what they do thats wrong) Non serious ones obviously that i could look at older copys and try them out. That would be fun.

The only real bugs that have ever stood out (As far as I can remember) tend to be related to new features not working quite right (Like the BBC tag disabling stuff not working in the last release). There has not been a single serious bug in any of the SMF public releases, and I hope we continue like that

Ive used SMF sinse beta 4 and i must say i would have been happy just to stay with it, it was stable and done the job i needed done, but updated just to fix anything that needed fixed and i also hope that all the updates are as good as whats been happening, has there ever been a serious issue, i havent noticed one i must say.

But this has to be added to, to create a point of reference and an archive of information so that future users may see what the first release was like and see what others thought.  :)

RC2 is the latest version I can download.
And I did two days ago, to implement on my test-site.
(So this thread is highly relevant and alive for me ;) )

I hope SMF 1 final arrives soon, so I can use it when my new site goes live.
