Simple Machines is pleased to announce the start of a new contest!
In SMF 2.0 we are including an option to send a birthday greeting to forum members. We would like to ask you to write our birthday email. The winner of the contest will have their submission used as the default SMF birthday email message.
The rules:
- Submit your entries by August 30th, 11:59 PM Server time (The submission page will show all times in your local time, however)
- Keep the entries short
- American English only
- Multiple submissions allowed
- The identity of the author will remain hidden from the voters
- Current and former SMF Team members are ineligible
- The use of HTML and/or BBC is disallowed
After the end date for submissions the current and former SMF Team members will review them and pick our top 5.
Those submissions will then be put to a public poll where the community members will decide which one we should use.
While writing your submission, please keep in mind that we are looking for a message that would fit with almost any type of board.
Prizes:The top 5 authors will each get a SMF T-Shirt
The grand prize submission will be included in the SMF 2.0 package and the author will be given credits for it in the appropriate location.
Legal Notice: Upong entry all submissions become the property of Simple Machines LLC. Simple Machines LLC also reserves the right to change these rules at any time.
To submit your entry please fill out the form at http://www.simplemachines.org/birthdaycontest.php (http://www.simplemachines.org/birthdaycontest.php). Please note that only those with a Simple Machines Community Forum account will be allowed to submit. This is to reduce spam and so we will be able to associate the entries with the author.
Are we allowed to use pointers where the persons name would appear? or the forum name
eg {username} or $1 or $user
Example
Happy Birthday {username}
would become
Happy Birthday Lisa
-----
Also I think I've spotted a discrepancy in the end time.
Submit your entries by August 24th, 11:59 PM Server time (The submission page will show all times in your local time, however)
But on the contest page it says
Submit your entry by August 31, 2007, 04:59:59 AM.
Hurry you only have 14 days, 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 30 seconds left to submit your entry.
Sorry the submission date was wrong. I wanted to allow 2 weeks to submit not 1. The submission date is August 30th.

There are three variables you may use and they are detailed on the submission page. They are {REALNAME}, {FORUMNAME}, and {REGARDS}
QuoteGives the recipient's display name. (i.e. nehcregit)
:o Whow! Why me?
No it's a command they used to display that user logged in. ;)
Ah! Thanks. Made my entries.
Another bug: Editing a submission copies it, so there are then two submissions instead of one. :(

Thanks, fixed that.
Quote from: http://www.simplemachines.org/birthdaycontest.phpSorry but current and form team members are not allowed to submit entries.
:'(
Quote from: http://www.simplemachines.org/birthdaycontest.phpSubmissions are still be accepted
(being?)
I know we can't use it in this contest.
But in the 2.0.
It would be kind of useful to use the variable {AGE} and {AGEWITHSUFFIX}
eg (the latter) Happy 20th Birthday.
The problem is that the user might not have filled in the year so SMF can't calculate the age.
(Notes from my profile, date of birth 0001/01/01)
So I'd receive a message, Happy 2007th Birthday
;)
I see your point Thantos.
I submited one
Current and "form" team members? :P Surly it's supposed to be "former" :P
Bad Developer! <hit with stick> ;)

Me too, 5 so far. Although I wrote them very late (well early morning), so they sounded funny at the time, now probably 'not so much'.
;)
I'am writting a few, Trying to be creative and yet a humor to it
Does this mean I'll have to retranslate the birthday text? :D
I always thought Jokes didnt translate very well.
I'm not so sure about birthday messages.

I don't know exactly what we are going to do for other languages. Ideally, each one will come up with their own. But let's get through this contest first and then we can examine what to do for other languages.
Thantos, hahaha. Just read your change.
Yoda, you are!
Doug, you can be Jar-Jar. ;)

Still accepted, submissions are, hmmmmmmm
Sorry but current and form team members are not allowed to submit entries.
Submissions end at August 30, 2007, 11:59:59 PM after which you'll be allowed to vote until September 06, 2007, 11:59:59 PM
Thats still incorrect yoda-speak :P (should be "Still being accepted, submissions are, hmmmmmmmm") :P Oh well.
form? former?
Oh well, only teamies and friends can see that anyhow
Things outside of public viewing don't need no stinkin grammer
I was looking through some of the entries and I noticed a common issue:
Quote
{REGARDS}
The {FORUMNAME} team
{REGARDS} expands into
Regards,
The {FORUMNAME} Team.
so it becomes redundant.
To help you all out I added a preview option that will show the email after the replacements have been done.
I also, hopefully, corrected the issue with \' showing up. If your entry has \' in it don't worry about it.
Also if your entry is causing a scrollbar to show up, again don't worry about it.
My entry caused naked pictures of Thantos to show up. Is that bad? :o
Nah we're all used to those by now. :P

You got a problem with Sideshow Bob?

Oh come now, we've been through so much, just call me Bob.
AHHHHHHHHHH! BOB!
True though, Sideshow Bob is voiced by Kelsey Grammer.
Whats this Foul "American English" ... :/
Right in the centre of filling things in, it's midnight, and you tell me I have to write it in AMERCIAN? :O
Not my favourite English tonight.
:D
^ Now you know how many of the British SMF Team members feel having to work with using the American English stuff. ;)
American English doesn't exist, it's just a way of them avoiding the fact that they can't spell.
I agree with that, Trekkie101 :D

American English doesn't exist...
American English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_English) is a dialect and not a language.
But you can't flip flop on the these things. If the rest of SMF uses American English, then it should stick with it.

We do have a British English language pack, so you can use that. Which I strongly encourage. :P
I'm with Trek. :P
^ And my [centre] and [colour] BBCode Mod
:P :P
lol.
We are a week into this thing and the submissions look good. Its going to be a tough contest to judge that's for sure.
edit: 4 days left...
Um no, little over 4 days left.
I'm confused

I'm +5? So is that added on 5 hours?
The second line of the rules give the exact amount of time left.
The first line is adjusted to whatever your offset is.
thanks
There is a little under two days left. Please finish up your submissions and get them in. I would hate for anyone to lose out because they wanted too long.

Good luck all
Any idea when the vote of the team is done and the public vote will be written?
QuoteHurry you only have 1 days, 21 hours, 7 minutes, and 21 seconds left to vote.
The public vote should start sometime on the 8th. Need time to process and review everything :P
Fine, thank you.

The birthday contest page says "Check back Today at 11:59:59 PM for the public vote!"?
Yeah, thats when the voting ends and in theory the public poll can start. A lot will depend on how quickily I can get everything taken care of.
Public Poll is now open
