Title: My SMF Portal
Post by: jburnett on October 27, 2004, 12:49:47 PM
I am working on buildings enough mods for SMF that is could become a portal.

Here is what I have so far, using pure SMF API.

The only thing I am worried about is that array in index.php being overwritten. I suppose I can supply one with my package once I am done.

Currently all I can do is add pure content ( text ). Categories, and sub categories.  Plus a little view counter.

Next I am working on a news manager, and then a download manager. I am building it based on my personal needs, and i need just about everything.

Here's the link to my little mod, sorry its not availible for download as I JUST finished it and I'm going to go eat some lunch. Once I get the news done I will probably post a zip file or something.

Oh also, the administration will be a seperate php script because I dont want to hack the SMF forum admin stuff....

I registrated and hit the link in the registration email, but can't get logged in as it keeps saying that I have to hit the link first.

May I add this to the portal/Cms list in here (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18370.0)?

Greetings Abedie

Looking good, but normaly ones comes in at the index.php, not at index.php?action=content.
So how is one comming to the action=content when visiting and how is one goes to the forum as the forum link is missing. (I work with Mozilla)

I havent added all the links yet, keep in mind I just started this this morning.

Check out the news modules I just wrote. No admin interface yet but that should be easy enough.

QuoteA few weeks ago we switch our forums to SMF. SMF is bar far the best GNU/GPL forum software package out there. We decided to consentrate our development and make...

I'm afraid... SMF isn't exactly GPL.  While the GPL is great, too many people misunderstand the rights it gives... so we had to go with a more restrictive license.  Too many people caused problems before.

oh, I guess I need to read up on your license then. This may be bad news I suppose for the portal I am writing for SMF ?

A few observations...

1: according to the source code in SMF it is open source, GNU/GPL or not that means anyone can modify it or write derived works regardless of the licensing.

2: The Library of congress Has no Registered Copyright on file for SMF, (Something the owners might want to take a look at seeing as how without a copyright registered you guys are severly open to someone swiping the code and copyrighting it themselves.

3: your portal sounds more like a series of modifications and addons rather then an integrated Software package like say Enigma, so I woldnt worry about any licensing issues so long as you follow the Open source guidelines, based on the copyright comments in each source file of this software.

I know kd7kws is now banned, so it's a bit unfair not to give the right of reply but I need to make a few observations:

Completly incorrect. vBulletin and Invision are also "open source" in that you can see the source. A license governs the user of that code, just because you can see the Source doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it.

You do NOT need to register copyright. Copyright is NOT a patent. Copyright is automatic from the day work is created and lasts for 50+ years (Depending on creation by a company, individual, transferred)

It's always sensible to ask in these situations (As has been done). As stated he cannot simply redistribute or include SMF in his package, and hence asking was obviously a sensible idea - even if it was never an intention.

Just so you all know I have been talking with Jeff, one of the owners. So theres no need to discuss it.

I am afraid that Grudge is correct. Jsut because you have or see the source doesnt mean you can re-distribute it with you code or modify it. That would mean ALL php, perl and other scripting based programs and software is open. Sounds like some people need to read the GNU-GPL a little more closely.

Yea, don't worry jburnett, kd7kws is a troublemaker from the past. I had to delete some spam in another thread but thought I'd address his post here as it's typical of the way some people think. I wish you all the best with your portal - we really want to encourage people like yourself here - and the SMF license isn't designed to be an obstacle for people like yourself - just something to protect us from those few rogue elements out there who just want to steal other peoples work and rebrand it as their own.

Yeah I hate that.

I do have one obstacle that is keeping me from making a league manager for SMF. Basically I need to set my default homepage. Right no no matter what you develope the board index comes up default. Its to bad you couldnt specify this based on the action. :-P

That would just mean a modification to index.php...
