In that topic, an image that a user posted expanded the div it was inside, and I was wondering how I could JUST have the image extend outside the boundary. It's even worse with other topics where images are in excess of 1300 pixels wide...

any suggestions?

I want to show the full size image, though... just not have the green box and the buttons go out to the right farther than the blue container...

set the max width and it will resize if the image goes too far.

Eg set it at 600px and anything wider will be proportionally resized down to that max.
Anything less than 600px will be at full size.

Without it and if the image is too large at full size, then it will force horizontally scrolling
