Title: bloggy!

bloggy! is a theme designed for SMF 1.1 which transforms your good old SMF into a fully-featured blog without any source code modifications.

It uses semantic markup and accessibility has been improved a lot.

I'd like to thank everyone who have provided their input.

Demo:

Updates

There has been an issue about me using » instead of the proper entity » which caused question marks to show up infront of board names on boardindex and the messageindex. For those who have customized the theme or don't want to upload all the files, here are the instructions for manually updating the theme to 1.02 (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=189552.msg1207451#msg1207451).

I like how you transformed the message index ;)

You could consider keeping the "« previous next »" in the post display cos' they are quite common in blogs. And also the "Read xx times" for bloggers with big ego :P

Thanks for the comments. As you can see I've released a new version which fixes some charachter display problems when using UTF-8 charset as default. It actually fixes the issue where ? are displayed in front of boards on the boardindex whereas it should display » (»). Here is the manual changes required to update the theme:

Search for this in BoardIndex.template.php and MessageIndex.template.php:

<li>» <a href="', $board['href'], '" name="b', $board['id'], '" title="', $board['description'], '">', $board['name'], '</a> <span>(', $board['topics'],')</span></li>';

And replace them with:

<li>&raquo; <a href="', $board['href'], '" name="b', $board['id'], '" title="', $board['description'], '">', $board['name'], '</a> <span>(', $board['topics'],')</span></li>';

And search for this in BoardIndex.template.php and MessageIndex.template.php:

<li>» <a href="' . $child['href'] . '" title="' . $child['description'] . '">' . $child['name'] . '</a> <span>(' . $child['topics'] . ')</span></li>';

And replace them with:

<li>&raquo; <a href="' . $child['href'] . '" title="' . $child['description'] . '">' . $child['name'] . '</a> <span>(' . $child['topics'] . ')</span></li>';

Let me know if you can't get it to work.

Thanks eren I like these wordpress designs too much and I have tried installing them on my demo site but it doesnot work as they are for wordpress and not SMF hehe okok

These templates have some striking common features which makes them so popular.

1) beautiful headers, enchanting scenes when you look at it they seem to make you feel You are in an entirely different world. thats the power of beauty.

I have seen your work is very fine and beautiful so I have posted my favourite wordpress templates here.

2) the colour combination is amazing as colours convey emotions and make u feel the colours are too good and the fineness in work.

I dont know about others but I always love fresh colours with some natural elements of mother nature's beauty and lovely icons.

It actually is really really customizable. Only thing you need to modify the whole design is to modify the stylesheet files.

I had tested the theme on Arabic and it had worked fine. The reason you're probably having problems is because you've not translated the theme language files. They are essential for translation. Look in the language folder, create copies of xxx.english.php files and rename them xxx.arabic.php and customize them to your liking.

And about the squareness, just have a look at the css file and you'll see how easy it is to make your theme square.

this template is the most advanced blog and much more than a forum can look like.  8)

many bloggers ad hit counters whereas it is a default feature of SMF. it is best to include all the functionality that SMF provides users must be left wondering how can a forum look so stunning whereas how can a blog have stats and so many other features.

I need the stats to be included as it is already and many more features.

Wordpress is evolving and adding features day by day and its wrong to compare this template with other blog templates as it is so advanced as it has more features than blogs as its based on SMF.

I want this template to have all the features that SMF provides.  :P

Eren, I'm seriously impressed! Since IMHO there's huge potential for SMF to cater for users who'd prefer to deal with themes than 'mods' in the traditional sense, this is absolutely the kind of thinking I like to see (and hope to experiment with myself if the time and inclination ever arrive together).

I agree. I too believe that themes are a better way for SMF to cater for new users. I hope you have free time to work on themes, I'm sure they'll turn up really beautiful.

people using wordpress can get it here http://web2feel.com/

these themes are available here for download http://web2feel.com/

falguni this is a nice theme but the footer.php file is encoded And I think that is what makes these themes irritable.

They 've written three different website addresses to footer.php, that is why no one will use these themes unless decoding.

So u have any idea how to leave only one address ? : only the theme owner

Regards...
Title: Re: bloggy!
Post by: falguni1 on August 21, 2007, 02:25:59 AM
I have seen 3 links at the footer and have visited these sites but cant seem to make out who is the theme maker, its very confusing. Its good to have links in the footer if they point out to the theme designer site (the maker of the theme) and the software used. As I feel that they should become famous and spread the word.

but the 3 links in the wordpress theme point to some celebrity baby clothes wot does that mean. I dont know.

Also I read about the condition that these themes are free to uses only when You keep all the links intact, so I feel you should not remove these links, why call for trouble.

When you site content is interesting no one will click the footer links put some adsense or adbrite leader board ads above these footer links and make sure they are interesting so that I any of your user goes to the footer area they are tempted to click the ads instead of the footer links.

Better wait for eren's new version of the bloggy themes.

that first theme the "man with the baby" is awesome I cant get my eyes off it, its a beauty, if you are tempted better use it if you use wordpress.
Title: Re: bloggy!
Post by: falguni1 on August 21, 2007, 02:28:31 AM
and 1 more thing people in truckloads are using the hemingway and these themes so ur notion that no one will use them is wrong.

Seems like beauty has cast a spell on them hehe.

50% of the templates beauty depends upon the header so I would request you to post means upload some free to use (not copyrighted) stunning images you find or you own so that you can use them in header.

Title: Re: bloggy!

falguni , actually I started to use the theme , a man with the baby, but as I said, Althoguh I am ready to leave the link of the theme designer, there two other irrelevant web site names in the footer.

Here is a topic in wordpress about this decoding trouble (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/125506) but I didn't understand what to do.

Only if I had a choice to remove these links. Because they didn't even add target="_blank" code to these links. When a guest comes and clicks to that link, they won't even remember my siteeee    :'(

Anyway, That theme (the man with the boy) was a really good one. But...  ::)
Title: Re: bloggy!
Post by: falguni1 on August 21, 2007, 02:47:26 AM
same here even though i dont use wordpress i have just installed wordpress to keep staring at the "man with a baby theme" hehe.

You are right I feel now that they are some sponsored links put in by the designer as wordpress doesnot accept such themes with sponsor links. now I get it.

I was trying to find the "man with a baby" theme on the wordpress site and I couldnot find it as it is not submitted there as it has sponsored links to it.

I also fear that since it is not submitted to the wordpress theme site it doesnot agree to the wordpress rules.

and since it is not under the rules of wordpress and doesnot follow its rules, I dont know whether deleting the sponsored links is a good/bad idea. I found this theme on a different site which doesnot belong to wordpress. I have not seen this theme on wordpress theme directory.

wordpress encourages to delete these sponsored links in the themes only if the themes are submitted to the wordpress theme directory.

I dont know whether I am wrong or right so please you contact wordpress regarding a correct "wot to do" along with the url to ur site and  from where u downloaded it and a screenshot if possible and the types/no. of sponsored links.

Bug report.

The theme displays the top post of each page (in threads of more than one page) as though they are the person who's started the blog. Either the original blog entry should be displayed at the top of each page, or all replies should look like replies. There is a mod somewhere to display the original post at the top of each page.

No, i didn't misunderstand you,i'm just html,css,template ignorant. Here's the only intsructions/directions i found at your site.

So the bloggy! came into production. A small notice for people planning to use the theme, make sure you go to your "Administration Center > Current Theme". You'll find some customization options for the theme and also a checkbox to enable a custom HTML block and a textarea to edit it.

Thats kinda vague.

The HTML block is always in the rightcontent area......the customization options have no description. Looking at the page source helps me about as much as reading chinese.

If the bodycontent is hardcoded in the index.template? forget it,thats not user friendly enough for the average schmoe.

Thanks for replying to my post.  8)

Well Maynardj, considering we are all people who are trying to help in return for nothing here. I'm pretty sure that your attitude isn't helping it.

And about your questions, everything is pretty detailed. You might not be seeing things due to the fact that you might be using utf8, rename the theme language files and add the utf8 prefix to them.

That being said, you are putting "yourself" out there for dumb*** questions like mine when you release a theme.I 'm sorry if i came off as rude.

Title: Under "Current Theme" how to make all boards show up on front page?
Post by: enthusaroo on October 15, 2007, 04:20:00 AM
I'm using the Bloggy! theme right now. When I go to the Current Theme options, one option is
Quote
Frontpage Board ID
You should enter the boardid of the board that you want the posts to be pulled from for display on the frontpage. ID 1 will be used if you leave this blank.

I put "2.0" for the first board and it works properly. However, is there anyway to make all boards appear on the front page? I tried doing "2.0 3.0" and "2.0, 3.0".... but it doesn't seem to work.

How can I make all the boards appear on the front page?

This is an awesome thing you did. I knew it could be done from the start and even started working a bit on it way too long ago, and left it undone. THANK YOU for taking the time to achieve this wonderful theme. I look forward to the improvements you make to it and what others do from it after you sparked their creativity with the awesome example provided.

Idea: it'd be great to have a script able to take a zip file with a WordPress theme and then output the CSS to add to your templates. It'd probably kind of tough to have it work with any and every theme out there, but probably workable with many.

I too, and trying to figure out how to get the list of forums on the front page to continue onto the next page, so it acts like a forum, rather than only listing the child forums once you get into a message.

I've found that boaordindex.php is the front page of bloggy, and once you click on a link in the menu on the right, you use messageindex.php, and the menu on the right changes to list only child forums rather than the complete list of forum topics.

I can't figure out the code, and compared the coding that supplies the menus for both..

Any advice or direction is appreciated... I'll keep working at it.
Title: Re: bloggy!
Post by: Parker on February 21, 2008, 02:43:27 PM
thanks Kindred - I will check those out.

Actually, I am trying to eliminate (simplify) the right section of the page rather than expand on it.    So, I expect that I will be removing some code.

In my situation, my forum's front screen will use the smf default theme.   Most of the boards will also use the default theme, with the exception of the blogs, for which I have specified bloggy.  I will not allow users to select other theme options.

This seems to work great -- I had to change the blue color to make it match the default and also adjusted the header size; otherwise it fits together pretty well from a visual perspective.   We will go-live hopefully next week, as soon as I figure out this final change.   My audience is fairly non-technical so keeping it simple is a must.

Thanks for the responses.  Good luck with your projects.

I actually removed everything except the "child board" list.

open MessageIndex.template.php, find  <div id="contentright"> and remove down to the closing </div>

You should also go into the global.css file and change the width of the contentleft tag to match the full width.

Well partially solved.  So far I have it working in the right content under statistics but I would really like to get it into the header.  Note: that if you use this script change the 'body' in the links section to 'bodyarea'.  Humm I'm thinking that if I change the css width for the forum name that I may be able to squeeze it in there.  A little more cut and paste needed to get it to work right in all pages or globally across all the pages of the forum.  Just have to find that sweet spot in the code.

I assume you are using HEX numbers for the background color, as I cannot find the background image anywhere.

If so, then where do I edit the color. If not, then what file name/

Basically Robert, it is in the themes folder then in the css folder under global.css line 11.  You can change the color there or add an image by using         background: url(../images/background.png); /*  A3D2A3 - green f2f2f2 - normal  */           Be sure to backup your original file first before you play.

Thanks :)

And when I clicked on "Current Theme" when using bloggy!, I clicked on "style.css" and it didn't appear and I didn't know that you used a different style sheet name.

Hey Robert, actually I didn't.  eren did it.  What it does is just tidy things up by putting like files in the same folders, thus making it easier for people like you and I to find things.  You kind of need to think of these type of programs as a 'top down structure' and the css supports the design of the package.

You are my hero....and I am waiting for my Hero... :)

Any update?

The current file on the theme site is corrupted because of the latest issues with the sm.org server. I'm doing some vast improvements to the theme including different blog styles. I'm hoping to release a theme with all the issues fixed within the week.

I get this error:

8: Undefined index: theme_options_reset
(etc....)

Same with me. Also:

8: Undefined index: forsakenlad_navigation
Datei: /forum/Themes/bloggy102/BoardIndex.template.php (eval?)
Zeile: 158

and some others alike. This causes bloggy! not to show any posted entries at all at the index.php page, just linktree and header links.

Seconded!

We have very basic needs for the blogging part of our forum, and used to use Daniel15's simple blogging mod. However, he hasn't updated his mod for 2.0, and I also think that this method would look even better (we'd simply make the blog-theme appear only on the blog-board).

I would love to have Bloggy! for 2.0 Beta 3.1 as well.

If it would help - I could paypal 5 dollars to you.

Anyway - thanks and I am looking forward to a version that works with 2.0

No need for the five dollars, I'll update the theme when beta4 comes out because there will be a lot of template related changes.

Therse a bug. If therse many pages comments, in second page first commentor shows as "blogger".

I use this with SMF 2.0, but its heavily modified ;D version http://foorumi.hoitajat.net/index.php?board=46.0 I use that theme only in "blog" board in my forums. I'm happy with it, only thing that one bug needs to be fixed :)

Well it actually isn't a bug, I couldn't find a way to display the first one without modifying the source code. I will release a mod alongside with the theme for extra capabilities when smf 2 beta4 comes out. You know why I'm waiting for that release ;)

By the way the way you did it is great, it actually makes more sense for people who want only one board displaying as a blog. I should make it an option in the theme itself.

Great, ill wait for that. Is it easy to do via source?

Great theme, thanks for writing it.

I'd like to know how to have the latest posts from all boards appear on the home page, rather than choosing a particular board.

Search for this in your SSI.php:

// Find the post ids.
$request = db_query("
SELECT ID_FIRST_MSG
FROM {$db_prefix}topics
WHERE ID_BOARD = $board
ORDER BY ID_FIRST_MSG DESC
LIMIT $start, $limit", __FILE__, __LINE__);

And replace it like this:

// Find the post ids.
$request = db_query("
SELECT ID_FIRST_MSG
FROM {$db_prefix}topics
ORDER BY ID_FIRST_MSG DESC
LIMIT $start, $limit", __FILE__, __LINE__);

Nice clean design, I currently use WordPress but this theme will allow me to move to SMF.  Now just have to decide on convert or start again.

I notice in previous posts there are 'requests' for WordPress conversion of themes, did any of these take place?  I can't say I've looked at the back-end template system of Wordpress or this theme, but is it a viable option/realistically possible to convert themes?

Hey, I really like this theme. I tried it out and customized it a little bit and it looked perfect for what I had in mind.

However, I really wish it was compatible with the SimplePortal modification. Far as I've noticed it works almost perfectly except for the part where you visit a topic/post and try to click you way to the categories. Where the categories should be listed, it only gives this "fatal error" message.

I really hope you can possibly fix this because it seems impossible to find another blog-like theme. I'll upload a screen shot to show you what I mean.

You could convert it - but I bet hands down, no-one here would like to go through converting it, it'd be a pretty big task :P

There are some other similar themes out there though.

Or does anyone know any other themes that would look like a blog?

You are right Runic, there is a bloc theme named "Minimalism[FB] design by Bloc" is available.

More details and showcase of our website - just refer this page on bloc theme - http://www.blocweb.net/index.php?topic=626.0

It needs some basic fix on chrome browser avatar alone. Rest the theme is wonderful and i assure that you will be satisfied.
