i would love for my users to be able to check a box that allows images to be shown or hidden. for instance, another forum i frequent (supported by vbulletin) has this...

basically if you didn't have the "Show Images" box checked, anything in [IMG] code would show as just the url for the image.
SSI is the tool to make SMF integrate in non-SMF websites.
I split off your post.
okay...thanks!
I Think this tool would rock. It Stops dialup users and such, having to load the large images of others.
bueller?
I found the first two in my profile.
Don't show users' avatar.
Don't show users' signature.
The third one should be in the profile also if someone will do it for you.
I like the idea too.
can someone at least tell me that this is not possible or too hard to do or something? anything.
seems like it would be pretty easy to me. can't you write some code that says if any text is surrounded by... [img] [/img] ...tags, then display what's inside the image tags as a link only, i.e. remove the image tags???
i'm not as smart as the rest of you, or i would write it myself.
Why would you put text inside an image tag?
Do you want to disable the image tag?

Do you want to disable the image tag?
yes. and let the user do that in their profile.
For links, you'd want to use the [url] tag.
Disabling tags is a global thing. You can disable the img tag in Admin -> Posts and Topics -> Bulletin Board Code
Motoko...
I get what he is asking for...
this is what comes up currently (without the quote tags):

If the user has disabled images, he wants the following to show up (without the code tags)
This is a message with a picture of a logo...

I don't necessarily agree with the concept... but that's what he wants added as a function on a per user basis.
kindred is correct.
sorry if i have not explained it well.
so, is this possible?
i'm not sure of the differences between smf and vbulletin, but it seems that if vbulletin can do it, so can smf?
we *CAN* do just about anything...
but just because another system does it does not mean that SMF will or even should do it...
personally, I'd suggest that you request this as a mod.

i certainly did not mean to imply that; just a suggestion that i thought would be helpful.

i thought that's what i was doing now, or even in this thread from several months ago:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=153039.0.
anyhow, how do i go about requesting this as a mod?
EDIT: i now see the mod request forum http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=79.0
can this thread be moved there or should i start a new one?
Hi, I think it's a useful idea and i'm interested in something similar also. So I wrote something which will strip the img tags and only show a link in a post and as well remove the thumbnails where the attachments are shown. But I just realised that I need to go through where the recent posts are shown also.
As well, I'm assuming you would like them disabled in PM.
Lol, it's a bit more complex than I first thought it would be. :D

not quite as concerned about pm's, but if it could be done, that would be a plus. :)

i have a little (very little) experience with stuff like this and i looked around to see if i could figure it out, but i was completely lost. ???
I believe it would be very easy to do as a mod for someone familar with smf/php
- Add a new setting to profile
- For all bbcoded images
In subs.php
if(users setting is to disable all images) {
$disabled['img'] = true;
}
- For attachments
if(users setting s to disable all images) {
when setting boolean for each attachment ['is_image]
set to 0
}
If noone managed it in the next couple of days, once i've cleared most of my bug fixing/language adding backlog, I may have a go at this.
I can handle it. Maybe I should of said involved rather than complex. Unless there's another way to set that variable. It looks like $options needs to be added as a global to most of the functions which use parse_bbc () in Recent.php and PersonalMessage.php. And there's a few of them.
I do like your idea for the attached images since it would save editing a theme file. But when I tried it, it had the undesirable effect of hiding the image size in the link. Something which I think should be shown. There's also a small problem because the thumbnail is now removed. When you click on the attachment link, you get that dialog box prompting you to either open or save. If you choose open it will open in the same window. Neither behaviour is something I like. So I'd like to add a link to the fullsized image in lieu of the thumbnail.
It's doable and not that difficult, just a bit more involved than I originally thought. :)
awesome. i can't tell you how happy this will make my users.
