Simple Machines announces its first ever meet. This meet simply dubbed, "The Meeting of the Minds" will take place near the end of the year. We normally hold semi-monthly meetings online, but a chance to meet in person will afford us new opportunities not possible to reach over the internet.
With this event set to take place soon, each of our team members is responsible for coming up with a portion to help alleviate costs. Within the next few days team members will have a donation link in their signature. "Help me attend MotM" (The Meeting of the Minds) If you have received good service from one of our various team members, please feel free to put a little something is his/her virtual tip jar, as always, it's not required, just highly appreciated.

Even I can't understand some British Local Accents eg Cornish/Strong Geordie.
Apparently my accent is very Stopfordian. Rather than Mancunian.

I was hoping they wouldn't realise. I'd sneak into ALM's luggage and sort of be a groupie.
Lol; I edited that one in.
If someone wants to pay for my entire trip, I'll let them wear a wig (if they are a guy) and pretend to be my significant other so they can tag along. :P

Oh my.
I can only image what'll happen when you fellas get together.
Admit it, you're asking for tips because you need to cover the costs of repairing the hotel rooms, not to mention the court costs, and the money it takes to make bail.
Take a camera.
Take pictures.
We need evidence.

I'll take my camera, though there is one person who wont be in any pictures.
Not that I can blame them. :P

With all my respect, I do not think that asking money is quite fair. And in the Charter member sections?
I mean, let's face it, you meeting in live is not really necessary for the SMF as a project or else it would be dead long time ago. It's a thing you want to do it for personal purposes, because it's fun.
When I saw the subject I thought it will be something like a conference, where people can show up and meet the team members and/or talk with each other. Instead I saw a topic for team-members only (almost all the replies are made by team members).
If this is a meeting for the team members, then I don't see why I should help anyone getting there?
Basically you are asking from the people who support the SMF as a project to support your personal whims. Not nice, imo.
Again, with all due respect, I support the project because the software is good, not because of the people on it. If it's a SMF meeting it should be financed by the Simple Machines LLC from it's income. If that's not enough, then you should skip it, instead of asking further money from the charter members.
Rudolf
The majority of it is being financed by SM, LLC. There are other things in the works that prevent full financing, of which i can't go into specifics.
This topic isn't meant solely for the charter members, it'll end up in the public boards soon. Nobody is required to pay. The point of this is to announce the meeting, not to ask for financing.
Personally I financed my part of my own trip from my own money for the better of SMF. I can afford to do this, but not all team members can. That part is meant to help those who need a bit of help to raise the relatively small amount (seen in the scope of the whole trip) we're being asked to attest to.
Its been a longtime goal of the management to get the team together for intense face-to-face meetings, which are of course more efficient than doing it via IRC.
This isn't a 'for fun' type of thing, else i'd agree with you.
On a side note, i would like to see some kind of conference someday. That would be very nice for everyone :)
I suppose it would be useful to meet up at least once. Although these days it would be alot cheaper to do video conferencing.
I look forward to SMF Expo 2010.
Inviting all smf admins, smf owners to Maddison Square Garden for a 2-day expo on smf.
HEHE ;)
The point i am making ultimately, this isn't 'for fun'. Though i don't doubt we will have a good time
This is a work/business meeting.
I'd like to mention that the first replies are all from Team Members because this was first announced to just Team Members and they had the first opportunity to reply. We then moved it to the Charter Members board out of respect for our Charter Members (We thought you'd like to know before we announce to the public.)
That said, I feel it is very important that the SMF Team Members meet before we have an open conference. We hope to be able to do this again in the future and when we do we'll announce where and when so anyone in the community can visit with the Team Members.
I want to be on the team now, lol

Thanks for the comments. Let me clear up some misconceptions.
SMF is paying for the MotM. This topic was initially started in the team boards. I moved it here before making it public to allow our beloved CM's access to this info before officially announcing to the public, not to ask for a hand out.
Each member does have to pay an undisclosed amount. Being that the bulk of our staff are college students, this is harder for some than others. I apologize if it seems we are only asking CM's. This post will be public soon. To quote myself..

Yes how true. But remember our entire staff works on SMF on a volunteer basis. We have team members all across the globe. We are rarely all online @ the same time, even for our team meetings. Meeting in person, dedicating a week to SMF will allow us to do things that just aren't possible on the net. Of course we will save time to have fun, but remember, this is a group of people who dedicate 5-30 hours a week (sometimes more) to an online project for fun.
I assure you this is a Win-win situation for the SMF team, and our users. :D
Jeez, The 1.1.4 announcement ate this thing up, I wonder how many people actual know its here :P
While I can't enjoy this meeting myself due to family and work. I am for sure going to kick people to get to the next one :P

plans aren't finalized.
i doubt anything of a press conference though.

As Met. said, the plans (details) are still in the works. The main goal is to get the team in one room, (and one time zone for that matter) to be productive and socialize. We have LOTs to discuss regarding 2.0, and other SMF related matters.
And to spearhead any rumors before they start....
"SMF IS NOT GOING PAID!" Please don't ask this.
Our stance on Why free is better (http://www.simplemachines.org/about/whyfree.php) is and will remain an SMF standard just like our Core Values (http://www.simplemachines.org/about/values.php).

You mean even non-US team members will make it?
it would appear so.
Although I expect some people will have work/family committments that will prevent them attending such a distance.
Yep, we would like to get team members from all over the world. I think there are already some from Europe who have already committed to going. :)

I'm commited to going to the Meeting and I look so much forward to it. I'd love to talk face to face with other team members; most importantly, being there at the same place and time creates a perfect opportunity for extensive and fast-paced brainstorming sessions, something which cannot be done easily in online settings.
Note that the Meeting is scheduled near the end of the year, which is normally a time to be spent with family. However, some of us are willing to spend that time on SMF. Think about it. ;)
Ah and SM LLC is paying a portion of airway fares? if so, I am impressed!
I hope those outside the US wont be facing the horrible nightmare of getting a visa as we do here.

Quote from: http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.htmlInternational travelers, who are nationals of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries, seeking to travel to the United States without a visa, should review this important information on passport requirements for travelers under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). All VWP travelers, regardless of age or type of passport used, must present individual machine -readable passports. In addition, depending on when VWP travelers' passports were issued, other passport requirements apply:
* Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended on or after 10/26/06 – requires integrated chip with information from the data page ( e-Passport ).
* Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended between 10/26/05 and 10/25/06 – requires digital photograph printed on the data page or integrated chip with information from the data page.
* Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended before 10/26/05 – no further requirements.
* Temporary, emergency, official and diplomatic passports are exempted from biometric digital photo and chip requirements, but must be machine-readable.
* Italian, French and Temporary German Passports

Without wanting to take this topic further OT. The point is the info on the chips is not encrypted.
As far as I'm aware (and according to several passport related articles/programmes I've seen), a passport with a fault chip is still a valid passport.
To prevent my all my biometric information being leaked, especially to the USA (where it is not subject to the superior EU privacy laws, and doesnt even get protection under USA privacy laws).

Doesn't work, RFID chips can be very thin. It is much easier to microwave them for 10 seconds or so. They usually kills the chips (although you should check if they are really dead to be sure).

Day 1 through 10 are devoted to World Domination issues. The rest of the time will probably end up as a Pirate vs Ninja vs Samurai vs Baby with dirty diaper vs Roseanne Barr.
Currently we have 18 people on the "I'll be there" list and 5 on the "I hope so" list. Thats 23 people out of 40.
Looking at the planned agenda we have meetings the first three days after arrivals. We are also including some time for people to break out into smaller groups. We have a large group activity planned for a couple of days and then everyone leaves.
I know the devs want to get together and get piss drunk and then do some serious coding ;) One thing I hope to do is try to discuss our future plans and see if we can't come up with some type of roadmap.
A good part of this is the team getting to know each other on a more personal level so we can hopefully function even better.

How they'll work I don't know yet. Ideally a team member would organize it for their area and we'd announce it.

Sounds good. Another question, as I can only use the chat, will it be passive oder can we (the users) ask in the chat also and will get an answer? Or, is it possible in the future, to start such a chat from time to time to "talk" with you about SMF and it's future?
Would you please ask questions regarding the chat in the other topic?
Oops :-[ Sure.
I'd love to go, but you're holding it on my 18th birthday. Kinda can't miss that one here at home ;)

One of the many things we'll be discussing during this retreat.
(one of the many, many things :D)

A interesing idea. However not every countery would have a team member in their area. You could create a "Team Research Member" who organzies groups and takes down ideas and Suggestions to bring to the Main Team Group.

Sounds like a great idea. :)
First things first we need to focus on this show.
I like this feature:
Quote from: akabugeyesPropose that we change the price of SMF. Let's make it -$0.05 (negative) instead of $0.00.
then we get money :D
Hope you all have a fun time there!
Have a great knees up.
I mean Meeting ;)

Oh where would we be without people like this.. :)
Depending on the results from this meeting will determine the decision for more localised locations.
I'm hoping for Southern California, but with my luck the next one will be on the east coast :(

ok.. wow.. I havent been on this board for a long time.. still trying to be patient for a SMFChess version I can use with the beta so i can move my forum up to version 2.0
anyhow..
here is my point..
I got my forum upgraded by doing partial restores of the database from a copy of my live one.. and moving it to a NEW location.
seriously.. lets just think this through LOGICALLY without all this discussion about the internal workings.
If your forum DOESNT upgrade with the upgrade installer package included in the beta.. is it reasonable to assume that your forum is modded to a level that you PROBABLY want to fix before upgrading to a NEW version?
Thats my problem.. my forum RUNS fine.. but.. the error log is FILLED with all kinds of php errors (the old 1.4 version currently running). Do I WANT to upgrade that.. or do I want to get as CLEAN a copy of the database over to the new version so that LONG term my forum will run better and be more reliable?
I am thinking the latter.. clean database.. no mods starting fresh.. etc..
That way isnt being discussed here.. your hacking the install script to work with a heavily modded forum that sounds like mine..
take a different approach.. selective restore of the internal parts of the database.. get only what you need to start it back up.. and go from there.. clean and fresh.. for longer term stability. If a mod was good.. reinstall it in the 2.0 version after you get your 2.0 CLEAN version going.
thats MY 2 cents.
...and what does that have to do with the MOTM?
What are the "official" dates for the MotM, by the way?
I can't seem to find the information anywhere...
Because all SMF development seems to have been stopped yesterday, and since there was a lot of activity even on Christmas day, I guess it will last until the end of the MotM... ;)
Well they're away now, see:

A significant portion of the team is currently away at the MotM. As such, the support response time will be longer than normal.
We thank you for your understanding.

We'll be gone for the rest of the week. There actually has been a lot of development going on the last few days. Just not the normal commit based ones. Nothing like sitting in a room with some people and talking things out.

Or more like theres nothing like sitting in a room with everyone's laptop open showing each other what they're working on....so much so, we've had to limit laptop times, and enforce bedtimes... j/k (1/2 way at least :P ) But seriously, there's been a TON of collaboration. Not just within groups, but throughout the whole team....

I'm guessing nothing will be told about what took place in these collaborations?
I imagine we'll put some things together and present. But probably not while we're still here :P
Could you guys post pictures of the entire team probably all standing together or sitting at the table including all the names? It'd be nice to finally put a face to the names :)

Someone probably will, but only after this contest (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=214263.0), I guess. :P

Yeah we thought it would be fun to see our community try it first...
Don't feel too bad though, we all had to play this game in real life... :P
Let the games begin :D

So how did you do? Where you able to match most of the members???
We were all terrible at it :P
I don't feel so bad now. You guys talk to each other all the time and still couldn't get em right...
I think I only knew like 4 maybe 5. WOULD BE NICE to know if I guessed right on any of the others. Guess I'll have to be patient and wait. :P
I don't know about the rest of the team but
I take bribes j/k :D
We were lucky enough to prearrange things so everyone coming from overseas, made it on the same flight. And once here, they all hit a major hub together. Mike and I arrived latter that night (http://blogs.simplemachines.org/motm/214191/Greetings+from+the+Lime+Green+77%27+Gremlin..html) and between the 2 of us, we got everyone down the 1st try :D
We had one member who's flight was delayed, we made him guess each and everyone... and he did a great job as well :P

Oh yeah, that particular member did an
awesome job guessing the members. :P
